Stargirl: Brec Bassinger Lands Lead Role in New DC Universe Series

Stargirl has found its leading lady.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Brec Bassinger has landed the title role on the DC Universe series, which received a straight-to-series order earlier this year.

It follows high school student, Courtney Whitmore (Bassinger) who rounds up an unlikely group of heroes to take down villains of the past.

Whitmore first appeared on Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. #1.

Bassinger is best known for her role on Nickelodeon's Bella and the Bulldogs.

Geoff Johns is attached to write and executive produce. Johns first created the character in 1999. He named her after his sister, Courtney, who lost her life in the 1996 explosion of TWA Flight 800.

“There is no other character in comic books more special to me than Stargirl,” says Johns,“ adding:

"And after searching far and wide I can say there is no other actor on the planet that embodies her more than Brec Bassinger."

Brec’s warmth, strength, humor and positive energy are core to who Courtney Whitmore is. I’m so grateful she’s signed on for the role.”

According to the official character description, Courtney/Stargirl is “a smart, athletic and above all else kind” teenager whose “seemingly perfect life hits a major speedbump when her mother gets married and her new family moves from Los Angeles, California to Blue Valley, Nebraska."

"Struggling to adapt to a new school, make new friends and deal with a new step-family, Courtney discovers her step-father has a secret; he used to be the sidekick to a superhero."

"‘Borrowing’ the long-lost hero’s cosmic staff, Courtney becomes the unlikely inspiration for an entirely new generation of superheroes.”

DC Universe launched earlier this month, but it is light on the original content right now. The first original series on the new streaming destination is Titans, and it will debut Friday, October 12.

Titans follows young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find belonging in a gritty take on the classic Teen Titans franchise.

Dick Grayson and Rachel Roth, a special young girl possessed by a strange darkness, get embroiled in a conspiracy that could bring Hell on Earth.

Joining them along the way are the hot-headed Starfire and loveable Beast Boy. Together they become a surrogate family and team of heroes.
