Riverdale, Friends, and The Flash Poised to Leave Netflix

With another new streaming service in the works, it can only mean one thing:

A battle for content.

During WarnerMedia's turn at the TCA winter press tour, Kevin Reilly opened up about his plans for the forthcoming streaming service the company has in the works.

Cabaret - Riverdale Season 3 Episode 9

The talk quickly turned to the content that would be on offer, and he said that the plan is to keep the Warner Bros. TV shows under the one roof.

This means there would be no plans to share them with other streaming outlets.

"You can expect the crown jewels of Warner will ultimately end up on the new service,” Reilly said.

Netflix currently has a deal with The CW that sees the most recent seasons of the network's roster of dramas added to the streamer in the U.S. just eight days after their seasons wrap.

It's unclear how all of this would work out, especially given that Netflix pays a lot of money for this deal.

Gal Pals Forever - Tall - Arrow Season 7 Episode 6

That means The Flash, Arrow, Riverdale, Supernatural and the rest of The CW's content could soon be MIA from Netflix in an attempt to get fans of the dramas to sign up to the new service.

TV Line reports that The CW's licensing deal with Netflix comes to an end this spring, meaning that the shows will be removed unless a new deal is ironed out.

Given Reilly's comments on the matter, it sure sounds like no deal will be made.

The CW dramas present just a small number of shows that will be affected by this. There's also the likes of Friends and The Big Bang Theory.

There was uproar late last year when it emerged that Friends was set to leave Netflix, and fans campaigned in their droves to keep the show on the streamer.

As such, Netflix played ball and paid $100 million to keep the streaming rights to the show, but that deal only runs to the end of 2019.

Having Friends and The CW dramas exclusively on the Warner service will be a good selling point to get fans to sign up, but given the sheer number of streaming services on offer nowadays, it's going to be difficult to get people to pay for another service.

What are your thoughts on all of this, TV Fanatics?

Would you move to Warner Media's streaming service if it was the only place to binge your favorite shows?
