Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 6 Review: Smells Like Teen Spirit

at .

Well, that was a surprising turn of events.

Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 6 was a flashback-heavy installment that took us on a trip to fill in the blanks about what really happened all those years ago.

The biggest surprise?

Three Aliens at Prom - Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 6

There was no last-minute twist to rule Isobel innocent. I expected someone else to show up at the cave, someone who was not an alien.

Hell, I even entertained the possibility that Isobel had an identical twin. Come on, it would have helped explain the constant changes in her mood.

I was also seriously getting the vibe that Isobel was in love with Rosa. There was more than one scene in which they got close, and Isobel looked like she wanted to get even closer.

Then there was the whole Isobel leaning over Rosa and telling her to run away with her.

If "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was supposed to make us understand more about the character of Rosa, it failed. She was a colossal pain in the ass who ran hot and cold.

I get that her mood swings were probably a result of the drugs wearing off, but still, she seemed like she was nasty for no apparent reason at the best of times.

Love Me, Please! - Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 4

Her drunken outburst at Max over the note was enough to make me glad she's probably not going to be part of the narrative from here on out.

She was supposedly trying to better her life, but there was just something about her that rubbed me the wrong way.

She was hurting and self-medicating with alcohol and drugs, so maybe I should give her a bit more of a pass here.

As for Isobel, there are still redeeming qualities there. Until we know what's causing the blackouts, I'll continue to hope that she's not a cold-blooded killer.

The way the siblings moved the bodies to the car and caused the crash was straight-up bananas. At their core, they were teenagers who knew they would be condemned to a life in quarantine if the bodoies were found.

Max and Michael were covering for their sister, but it's really difficult to root for the characters if they're going to continue covering up murders.

Caught - Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 3

Max held the secret for ten years and then spilled all the goodies to Liz in one fell swoop. He's either very dumb or too drunk in love to realize that he's putting his siblings in peril.

Now that Liz knows the truth, there's a good chance she's going to take her findings to Manes. She's going to want justice for everyone claiming her sister was to blame for those deaths.

If you watch Roswell, New Mexico online, you know that Arturo's life has been made hell in the years since, especially with Liz well away from town. He's been suffering in silence as people hurl racist insults at him, attack him, and even attack his restaurant.

Liz will likely want her family name to be untarnished, and for the town to pay.

The big issue this presents us with is that we were promised a love story. All the promotional material for the series zeroed in on the relationship between Liz and Max.

Liz Finds a Clue - Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 3

But Liz feels so betrayed that Max played a part in her sister's death that it's quite simply hilarious to think that she would want anything to do with him after all this.

Maybe the creative forces want to change course and switch things up. That's not bad, but there's going to be a lot of fans who were rooting for this couple to become a reality.

Did anyone else pick up on the fact that Isobel didn't have blackouts with Liz out of town? It can't be a coincidence that Isobel started having the blackouts again shortly after Liz's return.

I loved Isobel's realization that she's a murderer. She's told herself for so long that she played no part in the murders, with Michael lying that it was all him, she had no reason to think otherwise.

Isabelle Wants Answers - Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 1

Isobel is probably the only one of these characters who is starting to think rationally. She's starting to wonder whether the ship crashed all those years ago and that she and her siblings were put on this planet to cause death and destruction.

It wouldn't surprise me if Isobel sacrificed herself trying to end all of this. She knows there's something amiss with her body, and it's going to eat herself up if she kills anybody else.

This installment also gave us some insight into some of the other characters. The strongest backstory was the origins of the relationship between Michael and Alex.

It was cute that Alex told Michael about the cabin at the back of his family's land, but did anyone else know Manes was going to catch them post-hookup?

They do make for a great couple, and I loved that Michael shoved Manes out of the way when he tried to attack Alex.

While I liked getting to see what happened between them all those years ago, it seemed thrown in there just to give us a reason for Michael having a broken hand the night Rosa died.

Alex Struggles With the Past - Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 1

As you will recall, Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 5 concluded with Liz realizing Isobel was the killer based on the size of the handprint on Rosa's face.

It felt like a convoluted way to get us to this point in the narrative.

The other thing that's bugging me is the lack of Heather Hemmens as Maria. She's supposed to be a series regular, right?

She's been given very little to do so far, despite being one of the best characters. That's problematic.

Would it hurt for the characters to stop into the bar every episode to meet up with her? She's a hoot.

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" was not the hour I expected. It wasn't bad, but the spark the show had during the earlier episodes is starting to go out.

What did you think of the episode?
