The Crown Season 3 does not have a premiere date, but the show is already in pre-production on The Crown Season 4.

As such, a historical role has been cast. Netflix has confirmed that Emma Corrin (Grantchester) has landed the coveted role of Lady Diana Spencer aka Princess Diana.

“I have been glued to the show, and to think I’m now joining this incredibly talented acting family is surreal,” Corrin said of her casting.

“Princess Diana was an icon and her effect on the world remains profound and inspiring," she continued.

"To explore her through Peter Morgan’s writing is the most exceptional opportunity and I will strive to do her justice!”

According to IMBD, Corrin's sole TV role was on an episode of British drama, Grantchester.

As previously reported, The Crown Season 3 is leaping ahead in time, with Oscar winner Olivia Colman and Outlander‘s Tobias Menzies now playing Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, taking over the roles from Claire Foy and Matt Smith.

The decision to recast some of the roles was met with some controversy, but given that the show is expected to span multiple decades, it makes sense.

The series sat out all of 2018 because of production requirements with the cast overhaul, but Netflix maintains that the third season will launch this year.

It's unclear whether the fourth season will follow soon after, or if it will be sitting all of 2020 out. Time will tell.

Ben Daniels was cast as Antony Armstrong-Jones, Erin Doherty as Princess Anne, Josh O'Connor as Prince Charles, Marion Bailey as the Queen Mother, Emerald Fennell as Camilla Shand, and Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher for the fourth season.
