Nancy Drew Season 1 Episode 2 Review: The Secret of the Old Morgue

at .

The first body isn't even cold yet, and Nancy has already added another murder case to her agenda on Nancy Drew Season 1 Episode 2

She may not be a huge believer in the supernatural, which is odd given her dozens of daunting visions, but Nancy is just as determined to find Dead Lucy's killer as she is to find Tiffany's.

Being a friend or family member doesn't exclude you from being on Nancy's list of suspects, so don't bank on her letting you off the hook. Nancy is out to discover the truth, even if it hurts.

Ryan and George - Nancy Drew Season 1 Episode 2

For a show based off of a classic mystery series, viewers have to wonder how Nancy Drew is going to play out now that it's become a supernatural thriller.

Nancy isn't sold on Dead Lucy's ghost quite yet, but there's no doubt that she'll face the music eventually.

Nancy: Nevermind, it's crazy.
Bess: No, no, no. Go. I love crazy.

Once Nancy and the gang realize that they're up against real ghosts and not humoring a local myth, where do things go from there?

Is Nancy going to start hunting the paranormal? Is The CW looking to replace Supernatural now that the series is ending?

Given its insane popularity amoung viewers, Supernatural has some big shoes to fill.

But if Nancy Drew is given a fair chance and the series starts taking massive leaps in the right direction, it could easily interest fans of the supernatural genre.

Everyone is still a suspect when it comes to Tiffany's murder, but Nancy Drew Season 1 Episode 2 highlighted one person in particular.

Ryan - Nancy Drew Season 1 Episode 2

All the green arrows are pointing towards Ryan killing his wife. He immediately started hooking up with George after her death, he's trying to cover up the autopsy, and he's an all-around suspicious guy.

Nancy: We're gonna work together to break into the morgue tonight.
George: Wait, who said we were gonna do anything?
Nancy: Well, as fellow suspects you should be highly incentivized to help me.

But did Ryan murder Tiffany? Probably not. If he did, it would be a rather anti-climactic ending to the show's first mystery. We have more face in the series than that.

Dead Lucy isn't an obvious suspect to Nancy, given that Nancy doesn't believe in ghosts, but she's an obvious suspect to the audience. Again, that feels too easy of an answer.

Eavesdropping - Nancy Drew Season 1 Episode 2

Now that Nancy's sent off Tiffany's blood sample we'll hopefully get some answers to help us adjust our list of possible culprits.

Given that it's 2019, I had faith that Nancy Drew would make at least one of the main cast members LGBTQ+.

I was hoping it was Bess, and I was thrilled that it was.

Bess didn't say what her sexuality was outright, but she did get Lisbeth's number and open up to Ace about her trouble with dating--whether it's a boy or a girl.

Nancy, Ace, & Bess - Nancy Drew Season 1 Episode 2

Ace and Bess never appeared to have any romantic chemistry, and it was unclear whether the series was trying to push them as a couple or planning to keep Ace's crush on Bess confined to a simple attraction.

Surprisingly, the moment Ace offered to be Bess' platonic anchor, or "planchor" as he called it, things clicked into place.

Bess: The thing is that I don't really date anybody. Boys...girls...
Ace: Why not?
Bess: I don't know. I guess I've just been on my own for so long that I never let myself drop an anchor to get close to someone like that.
Ace: I can be your anchor. Your platonic anchor. I call that a platanchor. If you let me.
Bess: Are you asking to be my friend?
Ace: Yeah.

I'll always be a sucker for friends to lovers, so if it did happen years down the road I might not be against it. But right now, they're clearly better off as friends and nothing more.

Now if Bess can just text Lisbeth and ask her to dinner all will be right in the world. Their scene may have been short, but sparks were flying all over the place.

Speaking of relationships, Nick and Nancy's is slowly growing on me.

Nick and Nancy - Nancy Drew Season 1 Episode 2

I'll admit I wasn't completly on board with such a fast-pace romance at first, but the couple is provingn me wrong.

Nick's commitment to Nancy is admireable, and although we're only two episodes in it's clear there's nothing he wouldn't do for her.

Nick: Don't tell me you plan on doing something dangerous again.
Nancy: I won't...tell you.

Nancy's dad put her mind at ease when he revealed that Nick didn't know Tiffany was the eyewitness to his crime.

Nick was the only one in the group with a motive, but that motive has suddenly disappeared.

Carson - Nancy Drew Season 1 Episode 2

Or has it?

Nick's a great guy, but it's still too early in the game to rule anyone out completely.

As if Nancy didn't have enough on her plate, now she's facing jail time.

Nancy: George! What are you doing here?
George: Saving your ass. I figured you'd be dumb enough to get caught.

She broke into a morgue and tampered with evidence for a murder she's a suspect in. Anyone who doesn't know the whole story could easily think she's guilty.

Thankfully, her dad's on the case. But can he get her off the hook? Given everything stacked against her, it's going to take a miracle.

But if anyone can defy odds, it's Nancy Drew.

Investigating - Nancy Drew Season 1 Episode 2

Stray Thoughts:

  • Nancy's narration of the series is exactly what the show needs. Given that Nancy is such a closed-off character, it's intriguing to have a direct line to her train of thought.
  • If Carson gave a bloody dress to his wife as a prank, it wasn't a very good one. There's something sketchy going on with Nancy's dad, which was made more obvious when he burned the dress at the end of Nancy Drew Season 1 Episode 2.
  • There was blood in George's bucket. What does it mean? Is she going to die in the next year?
  • Nancy and George have great friendship potential. They may not be the best of friends yet, but secrets have a way of bringing people together.
