The Good Place Season 4 Episode 8 Review: The Funeral to End All Funerals

The results are in on The Good Place Season 4 Episode 8

Team Cockroach's experiment has come to a close and the judge is ready to reveal her ruling.

Are the results what they hoped? Or did the gang make an even bigger mess than before?

Shawn - The Good Place Season 4 Episode 8

As you probably know by now, the experiment was a success! Kind of.

Eleanor and her friends were able to prove that the point system was corrupt and that it was not an actual representation of human morality.

But maybe things were better left as they were considering that the judge's solution is to extinguish the planet and everyone who ever lived on it.

Obviously, Earth is canceled.

The judge

Yup, that includes are heroes in the afterlife.

Aren't judges supposed to be fair? Because this one doesn't seem to be making very rational decisions.

The judge's original argument made no sense. She claimed that she couldn't change the afterlife because only three people got better, but as Michael stated, that's not an accurate portrayal of the results.

Including Team Cockroach, seven humans got put to the test, and six of them improved. How is that not overwhelming evidence that change is possible?

The evidence needed to be overwhelming. I can't just turn the whole afterlife upside down because three people got a little bit better.

The Judge

The point I'm trying to emphasis is not everyone will change. That's why the Bad Place would still have to remain a part of the afterlife for everything to work.

The Good Place needs to be an option for the people who become better just as the Bas Place needs to be an option for the people who don't.

What I'm not understanding is why the test subjects improvement wasn't enough to singlehandedly change the judge's mind. Especially given Brent's upwards spike in the final seconds of the test.

The point of the experiment wasn't that all humans will change.

It was that the point system on Earth makes it impossible for anyone to achieve the criteria needed to get into heaven.

Team Cockroach clearly debunked this theory, so what's the problem?

Verdict - The Good Place Season 4 Episode 8

Regardless of this unnecessary blip, everything else came together nicely.

The best and most surprising moment of the episode, and maybe even the season, was Bad Janet coming to the rescue.

Anyway, I'm with them now.

Bad Janet

No one could have seen that coming.

The army of Janets that stormed in behind her was incredible, but will they buy Eleanor and her friends enough time to figure something else out?

Lounging - The Good Place Season 4 Episode 8

Michael may have made a good point about the consequences of waking up Chidi, but come on, the world is ending in about 45 minutes. It's now or never.

I don't say "no" a lot. Did I pronounce that right?

Janet

Plus, it's been a year and we're long past due for a Chidi and Eleanor reunion. If this truly is their last couple moments, shouldn't they all spend it together?

Everything has come down to this. Chidi has spent his entire life studying ethics and moral dilemmas, and it's time for him to put his knowledge to the test. No one can fix the point system as he can.

But is it too much? Will Chidi be able to straighten out his thoughts in time? Fight or flight might kick in for anyone else, but Chidi has always been a loose cannon.

Janet - The Good Place Season 4 Episode 8

Can he pull himself together and come up with a solution?

I want to say yes, but there's still five episodes left before the end of the series and something tells me they're not spending all that time hanging out in the Good Place.

Something has to go wrong, and we're worried about what it could be.

Who do we have to pay to give these characters a break for once?

Face Off - The Good Place Season 4 Episode 8

Stray Thoughts:

  • William Jackson Harper must have had a fun time filming that episode considering that all Chidi had to do was sleep and let everyone else carry him around.
  • The funerals were a cute way for the gang to pass the time. It's easy to forget that everyone is dead on Earth since they were dead when we were first introduced to them.
  • Bad Janet was the MVP of the episode. Who could have expected that?
  • The four people Team Cockroach helped on Earth coming back into play made everything come full circle. It was undoubtedlly the deciding factor in the judge's ruling.
  • Was anyone else surprised that the show ended the experiment this early in the season? I expected them to ride it out until the end and spend the series finale partying in the real Good Place.

It's your turn, TGP fans! What did you think of the episode?

Will Team Cockroach be able to figure out a new point system before the Judge finds her remote? Will the Judge even hear them out if they do?
