Crisis On Infinite Earths Boss Explains Surprising Smallville Wrap-Up

at .

With Crisis On Infinite Earths in full swing, there have been some surprising developments.

We already knew ahead of the five-episode Arrowverse crossover that Tom Welling and Erica Durance would be back to play their Smallville characters for the first time since the series wrapped in 2011.

Clark with An Axe - Batwoman Season 1 Episode 9

The return of the characters aired during Batwoman Season 1 Episode 9, and it did not go down the way many expected it to.

In a surprising move, it was revealed that Welling's Clark Kent no longer had powers. Lex Luthor learned that the hard way when he vowed to rid every single Superman from the multiverse.

After hurling Kryptonite at Clarke, it became clear that it had no effect on the former Man of Steel. Clark was quick to point out that he gave up his powers because he wanted to be a father instead of the protector of the Earth.

Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries opened up to Entertainment Weekly about the big change for the character, claiming that it felt natural.

"We had conversations about how to best see Tom again," she told the outlet, adding:

"We knew that we really wanted Brandon Routh as Clark Kent in the Daily Planet."

"I think the Tom Welling Clark Kent that we all kind of picture when we think of him is Clark on the farm," Dries continued.

"So it made sense. The farm is still there. It all felt very 10 years ago in a great way."

"To us, it just felt natural that that's kind of his natural environment where we'd see him."

If you watch Smallville online, you know it wrapped with Clarke finally embracing his Man of Steel status, but fans never got to see him fight while wearing his Superman suit.

That was something many thought would happen during the crossover, but it just wasn't meant to be.

Super Stare - Batwoman Season 1 Episode 9

Tyler Hoechlin and Brandon Routh are playing two different iterations of Superman on the crossover, so the wrap-up is probably the last we'll see of Smallville's Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

The CW is pushing forward with a Superman series featuring Hoechlin as the crime-fighting Kryptonian, so there's that.

Crisis On Infinite Earths continues tonight on The CW as an episode of The Flash. Then, the crossover will resume in January as episodes of Arrow and DC's Legends of Tomorrow.
