The United Nations are attacked by HYDRA impersonating S.H.I.E.L.D. Unfortunately, many lives are lost.
General Talbot visits Senator Ward and informs him he's not sure S.H.I.E.L.D. is behind the attack. Senator Ward decides to take action anyway labeling S.H.I.E.L.D. a terrorist organization on national television.
Meanwhile, S.H.I.E.L.D. works diligently to clear their name. Simmons recognizes a weapon used in the attack, having spent so many months undercover at HYDRA. Toshiro Mori is the tech's designer and he lives in Japan.
May, Hunter and Bobbi, who happens to know Toshiro personally, are dispatched to Japan for more intel. Naturally, the exes are not thrilled to be working a field op together. The trio arrive in Okinawa, and Bobbi meets with Toshiro. He suspects she might be a S.H.I.E.L.D. spy, but discusses weaponizing the Obelisk anyway. Once her cover is blown, Hunter and May assist in her rescue. Bobbi also learned the weapons in question are now in Belgium, so off they go.
Fitz and Simmons are finally reunited but it's an awkward reunion. She is clearly struggling with this new Fitz, but Mack points out that though he's a little weird he likes this Fitz. She simply needs to accept he's different. Mack tells her "from what I've seen the only thing that makes him worse is you." 'I know, why do you think I left?" Simmons replies.
Skye is tasked with gathering intel on Senator Ward from his brother Grant. He's not what he seems Ward warns Skye.
Coulson soon pays the Senator a visit striking a deal. S.H.I.E.L.D. is cleared of any wrongdoing in exchange for the return of the Senator's brother. Senator Christian Ward fulfills his part of the deal and announces his brother's connection to HYDRA.
Elsewhere, Grant slips out of his handcuffs, subdues the guards and escapes. Looks like Coulson can't deliver his part.
