Recap

Kristen, Acosta, and Ben are called to investigate a supposed miracle when Naomi Clark, a 17-year-old soccer player, comes back to life after she had been declared dead for almost three hours.

The hospital claims it wasn't a miracle, and there is a medical explanation. The hospital staff blame the EMTs for their inexperience, but the EMTs say the medical error wasn't on them.

After watching video footage of the efforts to save Naomi's life, Acosta realizes the "miracle" can be explained by medicine and implicit racial bias.

Naomi's lungs were hyperinflated -- air got trapped in the lungs and caused them to overinflate -- and when her lungs deflated almost three hours later she was revived.

However, as Acosta points out, if the doctors had performed CPR on Naomi for a longer period of time, she would have been revived sooner.

Kristen also meets with her former boss, Lewis Cormier, at the Queens District Attorney's office where she runs into Townsend.

She learns that Townsend has been hired to the office to work as its new forensic psychologist. She tells Cormier that Townsend is a psychopath, but Cormier doesn't believe her.

Townsend taunts Kristen and says he's going to overturn all of her old cases.

Kristen's daughter, who has a serious heart condition, experiences nightmares similar to those of Kristen's. However, Kristen realizes her and her daughter's nightmares are the result of a scary demon from a television series.

Acosta tells Kristen he used to have visions but now he doesn't. He uses drugs at the end of the episode to seemingly achieve the same sense of celestial enlightment.

Evil Season 1 Episode 2 Quotes

EMT: I’m not religious; I don’t believe in all that stuff, but c’mon, that girl was dead for three hours. I saw her dead.
Acosta: Do you think it was a miracle?
EMT: I don’t know; I don’t like that word, but something happened. You can call it a miracle, you can call it just weird, but something happened.

You know what I like about sex? That moment when you see in her eyes she wants you. Kristen wants you, or when she bites you. Oh my god. Screams like she’s out of her mind. You can’t tell me that from Madeline. You don’t say she screams like a saint; she screams like a fricking steam engine. I’m sorry. Did that distract you? Why don’t you make up your own prayers? Why do you keep repeating that same old crap over and over again? Who’s on first? I’m asking you who’s on first? That’s the man’s name. That’s who's name? Yes. When then who’s on first? Yes. Go ahead and tell me. That’s it; that’s who. Yes.
