Three years after Michael's death, Jane still has trouble moving on. She imagines pictures of him talking to her, and she listens to the last voicemail he ever left her. Jane gets an opportunity to showcase her writing when her boss selects her novel for an emerging writers showcase. Instead of her original novel being about her grandmother, the book morphed into her love story with Michael, but with a happy ending. Jane begins to cry before taking the stage, but Rafael convinces her to go out there and read. Jane ends up getting a call from a publisher interested in her novel.

Jane and Rafael try to deal with Mateo's behavioral issues, as he lacks focus and lashes out. Per Rafael's insistence, they put Mateo in a martial arts class. Mateo takes to it, but it's not enough to change his patterns, so they agree to hire an aid to help him at school.

After spending time in prison, Rafael came out trying to remain peaceful. He has a girlfriend named Abbey, and he tries to stay out of Petra's reopening of The Marbella. Petra has worked hard remodeling and rebranding the hotel as a fun, family-oriented place. However, Petra has been sleeping with the douche-bag adults only hotel owner next door, Chuck. She accuses him of messing with her construction of a kids clubhouse, but it turns out he didn't do it. Whoever did do it probably did it to hide the body of Scott, aka Vests, that is found in the sand.

Rogelio and Darci's reality show is a success, but their relationship falls apart and they never ended up having a baby. Xo was painted as the crazy ex girlfriend on the reality show, but she has been happily living with Bruce. Rogelio and Darci have a fake wedding for the show, and the producer tells Rogelio he will finally get to star in the American version of The Passions of Santos if he commits to one more season of the reality show. After initially turning it down, Xo tells Rogelio to do it.
