Recap

In the cafeteria, Dan asks Neil why he looks sad. Neil says he’s texting a girl he met at a party, and he’s feeling incredible stress.

Abby and Gurgs arrive with a banner to tell everyone the Justice Buddies are visiting, a group of school children including Gurgs’s nephew, Xavier.

The kids arrive and Abby and Gurgs unfurl the banner to welcome them. Abby pairs the kids off with the adults. Max and Neil get paired up. Claire gets Olivia, Xavier Gurgs, and Carlos gets Dan.

Dan is resistant to the idea but Max lays on the compliments and calls him a hero and Dan gets comfortable with the idea.

In the courtroom, Abby tries to entertain them with a magic trick involving the Constitution, but she gets it stuck in her bra and needs a moment outside to find it again.

Max and Carlos both head out to buy Dan a coffee. Claire comments on how she wants to be a DA one day too just not in night court.

Max helped Neil compose a text to the nurse he met at the party at his grandmother’s nursing home, and she’s responded positively.

Gurgs is trying to reconnect with Xavier but he’s pretty uninterested in reminiscing. When she asks what he’s into nowadays, he shows her a TikTok of Malcolm FX, an artist he follows and supports. Gurgs realizes Malcolm’s been arrested and his trial will be held in the night court.

Xavier reveals that he and his friends are actually there to protest if Malcolm FX is convicted. Gurgs is unhappy to hear this.

Gurgs tries to get Abby to send the kids home before the Malcolm FX case is heard. Abby’s sure the kids will be inspired seeing the court in action. When Malcolm’s case is called, the kids cheer his statements on how defacing a statue of Christopher Columbus is the only way to get his message across.

Abby asks Gurgs to calm the kids down. Gurgs comments that the charges against Malcolm seem unconstitutional. Abby’s sympathetic but she has to find him guilty since he confessed to the crime.

Carlos objects loudly to the verdict. The kids unfurl their own banner and display posters in support of Malcolm FX. Abby has the courtroom cleared and convenes a meeting of the staff in the hallway.

Gurgs admits she knew the protest was going to happen. Abby asks her to get the kids to calm down. Gurgs leads them back in but chooses to join the kids’ protest.

Abby reminds Gurgs that she could lose her job. Gurgs doubles down and leads the next chant.

Abby and Neil discuss the situation in her chambers. Neither of them want to report Gurgs and the kids as trespassers. Neil leaves.

Dan comes in with a list of demands. Abby finds his flippancy disappointing. Gurgs comes in with the real list of demands.

In her chambers, Abby finds the demands unfair because the protesters want her to change things she has no control over. Gurgs draws a parallel to why the kids are protesting in the first place.

Dan comes in as Gurgs leaves and Abby confesses she realizes that she is the bad guy in this situation. Dan points out that in a system that doesn’t always get it right, she’s bound to be the bad guy once in a while.

Olivia confronts Claire in the cafeteria, seeing her as some sort of twelve-year-old Justice Nemesis. She threatens to deep-six her law school aspirations with pictures of the protest. Claire seems unfazed. Olivia gives her a reality wake-up call and it causes a crisis of confidence. She breaks down crying and flings herself into Olivia’s arms. Olivia admits she felt threatened by a thirteen-year-old and projected herself on Claire’s future.

Xavier and Gurgs have a talk about how she’ll probably lose her job over the protest and why she works in a courthouse to begin with.

Abby and Dan enter, putting on a staged scene where she charges the kids with criminal trespassing but Dan saves the day by securing a permit granting them the right to assemble.

Xavier admits the protest is over. They realize the system needs a lot of work but there are people there who care about real justice.

The kids bid their adults goodbye. Max sets up Neil’s date with the nurse. Abby and Xavier are both expected at Gurgs’s next Sunday Bun Day. Carlos thanks Dan who shoos him away but secretly enjoyed the experience.

Abby: Gurgs’s nephew, Xavier, and some of his classmates are here to do research for a Social Studies project.
Dan: Don’t you think it’s a huge mistake? Bringing children into the court? And Earth, in general.

Neil, what’s troubling you? I mean, normally, I wouldn’t ask about someone else’s life, but your sadness amuses me.
