Recap

Ian finds Jenn at a poker table. He tells her, “It’s Turtle Time!” and she calls the hand and leaves the table with him.

Magic is buying earrings for an anniversary gift when Jenn and Ian track him down.

They return to QL HQ where everything is wrapped in plastic. Ian explains that when the program was shut down, he snuck back in and turned on one computer station to keep it scanning for Ben.

He explains that no time has passed for Ben. This shocks Jenn and Magic. Magic makes a call to someone to give Addison the news.

Ben lands in the body of a bank teller, still thinking about Ian telling him it had been three years since they’d had contact with him. The woman waiting for her money at the window is impatient.

Ben closes the window and tries to contact Ian. He figures out his host’s name is Lorena Chaves. She’s a new grandmother. It’s 1986.

Lorena’s co-worker, Rebecca, comes over to chat. Their manager is critical of their downtime.

Rebecca spots her estranged brother, Sean, in the line for the bank tellers. She wonders why he’s there. They haven’t spoken in a long time. Last time, he borrowed her car and disappeared for three days.

She thinks he’s there to ask her for money, but he and two men stage an armed robbery instead.

Addison is leading a team on a training range. At its conclusion, she checks in with them and Tom interrupts her to console the trainees. He steals her away to tell her about Ben.

Ben fills a bag with money from the till at his window. The gang’s ringleader waves a gun in his face telling him to hurry up.

Rebecca can’t believe her brother is part of the robbery.

Addison can’t believe Ben’s alive. She suffers a crisis of decision and asks Tom what she should do. He tells her to decide with her heart and they’ll get through it together. They embrace.

At HQ, Ziggy detects Ben and Jenn pinpoints him in Tucson, Arizona in 1986. In the original timeline, eight people die in the bank robbery when it goes wrong.

In the bank, Ben can hear Ian but can’t see him. A second later, Ian appears in the middle of a counter. He steps out of that so he doesn’t look disembodied.

Ian fills Ben in on how everyone on the team is, without revealing any really important details.

Ziggy recommends Ben get the robbers gone before the police arrive in order to save everyone who dies when the police storm the bank.

Ben goes to the robbers to advise them the police are on their way and they should leave. The ringleader is upset they’ve only gotten $8000. He says they have to get the money that’s in the vault. Sean says the plan was a quick in-and-out job.

Ian gives Ben a route the robbers can take to avoid being seen by the police. The ringleader refuses to go and the police arrive outside.

There’s a pregnant woman in some distress. The phone rings. Ian tells Ben in the original timeline, no one picks up to negotiate with the police and they storm the bank.

Ben answers the phone despite the ringleader’s misgivings. Sean reasons with him and convinces him to let Ben answer.

Ben tells Detective Reynolds that the robbers are releasing two hostages as a show of good faith.

Shaun and the third man convince the ringleader to let the pregnant woman and the guard they attacked out so they can get medical attention.

The ringleader demands the manager give him the code to the vault. He hesitates and the ringleader breaks his hand, causing the manager to faint.

The ringleader then turns on Rebecca. She doesn’t have the code. The ringleader calls Sean over to convince her. She tries to plead with him. The ringleader laughs and tells her he pulled Sean off the streets six months ago.

Sean's angry with Rebecca but the ringleader won’t let him shoot his own sister. Instead, he plans to do it himself unless she gives him the code. Ben jumps up and claims to know the code.

Jenn has to hack some dark web stuff to find a code for the bank vault. Ian relates four of the five digits to Ben before the imaging chamber glitches out.

At HQ, Ian demands to know what happened and discovers the team being arrested.

Ben has to guess the last digit. He uses Addison’s favorite number and it works.

Tom Westfall arrives at HQ and has the team released from custody under his authority.

Addison’s with him and they reunite with the team after the FBI folks leave.

Tom goes to deal with any blowback from his interference. Addison tells Magic that she doesn’t plan on returning to the team.

In the bank, the robbers empty the vault. Rebecca confesses to Ben that she’s uncertain how she and Sean ended up like this. She admits that she probably wouldn’t have been sympathetic if he had come to her for help six months ago. She says everything’s changed so quickly, it’s left her helpless.

The robbers return to Sean at the front and announce they have $120,000. Sean asks how they’re supposed to get away. The ringleader lays out a plan, based on a robbery that happened a month ago at Yuma. Sean realizes the ringleader always planned to rob the vault and had lied about how easy the heist would be.

The ringleader tells Ben to convey the instructions when the police call in five minutes.

Ian offers to let Addison take over as Ben’s guide. She says it’s probably not a good time – being in the middle of a hostage situation – to change things up for Ben.

Ben tells Detective Reynolds the robbers’ demands. Reynolds is reluctant but says he’ll get it done in an hour. Ian returns. Ben’s distracted by the fact Addison refused to be his guide.

Ian tells Ben the detective lied. He’s ordering snipers into position. Ian says that the situation is worse now. The firefight that ensues hits a gas line and everyone will die.

Ben goes to Rebecca and jogs her memory, causing her to remember there was an expansion planned at one point. She says the back of the storage closet in the conference room is just drywall. Through the back of the closet is an empty storeroom.

Ben tells the robbers there are snipers outside. They force all the hostages into the conference room while they hole up in the vault.

Once the robbers leave, locking the hostages in the conference room, Ben opens the closet and uses a box cutter to break through the drywall.

Jenn goes to talk to Addison.

The hostages all get out and only Ben and Rebecca are left when the ringleader returns and plans to shoot Rebecca. Sean shoots him first.

The police rip the doors off the bank. Sean plans to kill himself. Ben talks him down. Rebecca offers to take the gun and claim to have killed the ringleader in self-defense.

The police come in and arrest Sean.

Ian tells Jenn that Sean admits to killing the ringleader, refusing to let Rebecca take the rap. The shooting is still ruled self-defense.

Jenn admits that’s great news but wants Ian to confess to what he really did with Ziggy to find Ben.

Addison comes to tell Tom that she’s heading into the imaging chamber. She tells him she can’t just walk away from the mission and the team, or from Ben. Tom accepts this decision.

Addison believes the minute Ben looks at her, he’ll know what’s happened.

In the bank, Addison arrives. She gives Ben the wrap-up on the people. Ben wants to talk about the three years. She’s speechless. He looks at her and knows what’s happened. He leaps with the realization that she’s moved on because she thought he was gone.

Quantum Leap Season 2 Episode 2 Quotes

Tom: I didn’t pass my first time either.
Addison: That is true. Tom and I may have failed this a few times at Fort Rucker.
Tom: Except we were shooting at cardboard cutouts.
Addison: That was thirteen years ago. Things have progressed.
Tom: Yeah, we’re old. Don’t remind me.

When the government lost all hope of getting Ben back and they shut us down a year ago, I snuck back in here and I turned on one single computer station and I just left it running. Like a SETI program that’s searching for aliens, except I was scanning for a mild-mannered physicist.
