Recap

Ben leaps into Agent Robert Cook, a federal agent with Project Sign, the program that investigates aliens and UFOs in the 1949. He’s with a farmer who believes his cows are being abducted. He describes the ones he’s seen as short and still. As they walk towards the dark woods, the electricity in the farmhouse flickers and the dogs howl.

Ben investigates alone and discovers a group of prankster kids leaving out a bunch of garden gnome statues.

Ben gets in his car and Addison shows up. They discuss what’s happened and she tells him she’s been with her new partner about eight months.

They turn their attention to the leap. He’s an investigator for Project Sign and is the best agent for closing cases. His next assignment is in Starlight, New Mexico where a UFO reportedly ran two girls off the road, putting one into a coma. Ben starts up the car for a 300 mile road trip.

At HQ, Ian’s talking aliens. Jenn is skeptical. Magic weighs in on the side of aliens existing.

Ian’s research discovers one of the girls in the accident is Carrie Baker. Her friend, Melanie, is the one in a coma. Melanie eventually dies and Carrie goes to prison for manslaughter.

Ben and Addison ride along, making awkward conversation.

The girls are in St. Sebastian Hospital. Ben visits Carrie who says he doesn’t need to wait for her grandfather because he’s not interested in hearing her story again.

She describes driving on State Rd 120 after midnight with Melanie. The radio started making weird noises. Then there was a bright light in the sky. Suddenly a loud noise like a tornado started and she hit the gas to get away. They ran into a tree and tried to run away on foot. Carrie fell into a ravine after telling Melanie to get away on her own.

The sheriff arrives and asks who Ben is. Carrie wants to know how Melanie is. The sheriff says he can’t see her as it’s an ongoing criminal matter.

Stepping out of her room to talk, the sheriff reveals there were no aliens at the crash site, just an unconscious Melanie in the car and a bottle of whisky in the backseat. He explains that Carrie’s his only granddaughter, and she’s been acting out ever since her mother died a year ago of cancer.

Melanie’s father, Russell Hunt, arrives, demanding that Carrie be arrested.

Ben meets a waitress, Hannah, at the local diner. She chats with him about the possibility of aliens and her knowledge of physics startles Ben. The sheriff arrives to take Ben out to the crash site.

As they drive out, the sheriff lets Ben know he’s got less than 72 hours before the circuit judge arrives to make a bench verdict on Carrie’s case. Ben notices a car following them. The sheriff thinks it’s Hunt’s men. He pulls a u-turn and plays a game of chicken, running them off the road.

Ben realizes the sheriff was the anonymous tip that brought him in to investigate.

At the site, Addison joins them, confirms the men in the car work for Hunt. She draws Ben’s attention to a footprint too large to be Carrie or Melanie’s. Ben calls the sheriff over before Addison can finish her hypothesis.

There are no tracks from Melanie so it looks like Carrie’s story doesn’t ring true.

Addison gets Ben alone and suggests that Carrie isn’t telling the truth. Ben doesn’t believe that.

Ben finds Carrie reading to Melanie. He asks her about the night of the accident and if anyone else was around. She describes green, glowing round eyes that might’ve belonged to aliens.

Outside the hospital, Addison points out Hunt’s men looking their way. Ben goes to confront them and they start beating on him before the sheriff shows up with a shotgun.

Ian looks into Hunt’s finances and discovers he was the largest landowner in New Mexico. His money supposedly came from oil but all his oil wells dried up in 1946. With no other businesses or outstanding leases, his income is mysterious. Jenn thinks it’s drugs and Magic theorizes that a helicopter ran the girls off the road.

Magic asks Addison about Ben’s behavior, confronting the goons. He wonders if Ben is getting reckless because Addison’s there. She insists she can still help Ben through.

Ben takes the information to the sheriff and the sheriff remembers that Hunt has a ranch about an hour away where he could stow a helicopter.

Addison is concerned that it’s almost dark.

As they approach the ranch, a bright light appears over them. They turn off onto a dirt road. The radio is making strange noises. Suddenly, Addison can’t hear the radio and Ben can’t hear her. She glitches and returns to HQ.

She wonders if Janis is to blame. Ian reminds her that Janis works for the NSA in Hawai’i. He then tells her that the interference is coming from Ben’s side of the leap.

In Starlight, Ben realizes there’s a signal jamming protocol. The sheriff stops the car and tells Ben to run for the trees while he fires on the aircraft with his shotgun. Ben runs, trips, and is attacked by something.

Addison wakes Ben up in his hotel room. Neither of them knows how he got there. She accuses him of making rash decisions. He admits he’s not himself, but he’s determined to save Carrie.

Outside the diner, Ben catches Hannah’s eye. He asks if she saw him in the morning. She says she saw the sheriff carry him up to his room. She spots a bite on Ben’s neck. Addison says it wasn’t a spider.

He tells Hannah to tell the sheriff to meet him at the hospital. They examine Melanie and she has the same marks on her neck. Ben tells the sheriff, they probably gave Melanie too much of whatever knocked Ben out and it put her in the coma.

The sheriff says the aircraft that chased them wasn’t a helicopter. Ben admits there’s more to learn.

Carrie is discharged and thanks Ben for believing in her. Ben points out that it was her grandfather that called him in.

At HQ, the test results on Ben’s blood show that he has Gamma Blue 5 in his system. Magic says there’s a serum to reverse its effects. It’s a military thing.

Magic says there isn’t a military base within 500 miles. Ian suggests a black box site on private land. Addison connects it to Hunt’s unexplained wealth.

Addison reports to Ben that General Austin Murray was assigned to Los Alamos and was probably in charge of the black box site on Hunt’s land. They’re outside the sheriff’s house and it looks like he’s packing to run away with Carrie.

The sheriff comes out with more suitcases and says the judge is arriving first thing in the morning. Hunt also had the sheriff suspended for impeding the investigation. Addison tells Ben that if they run, they’ll both go to prison.

Ben begs for 6 hours to prove there’s a military base on Hunt’s land. The sheriff is able to narrow down the location to the Cutler Mine. Addison’s freaked out that Ben’s going to get hit with another dose of Gamma Blue 5 and die. Ben shows her the adrenaline he stole from the hospital to keep him from falling into a coma.

Ben has Hannah bring Carrie to the hotel room to hide from the deputy who has been ordered to lock her up.

Addison pleads with Ben not to go through with the plan. Ben insists it’s the only way.

At HQ, the team weighs the dangers of the plan.

Ben injects the adrenaline. Addison begs him to not make her bury him again. He tells her no one made her do that and if she doesn’t support him now, the plan won’t work.

She keeps up with him and follows him through a military base.

In the morning, he’s dropped shirtless in a field. The sheriff picks him up. Addison says she saw everything.

General Murray meets them on a remote road. Sheriff informs him he has photographs of Ben being grabbed last night and being dumped by Murray’s men in the morning.

Ben states he saw everything that happened. The glowing green eyes are prototype three-barrel night-vision goggles. The UFO is a zero-point jet.

Their demands to the general are a serum for Melanie Hunt, a statement to Mr. Hunt explaining they caused the accident, a full scholarship for Carrie, and a new car for the sheriff.

Furthermore, they need to move the base away from Starlight or anywhere where civilians could be hurt again. Ben offers the information that there’s an abandoned airfield in Groom Lake, Nevada. He calls it Area 51 (even though that’s not what it was called back then.)

Ben recommends the sheriff talk to Carrie about what they’re both feeling.

Addison checks in with Magic. She says she doesn’t know how to help him anymore. She offers to let someone else be the hologram. Magic suggests she give it more time. He also recommends she lean on Tom because no one can go through it alone. She agrees that’s good advice and leaves. Magic picks up his phone and calls someone to talk through how hard things are.

Ben pops into the diner and talks with Hannah more. She admits she always wanted to be a scientist. He gives her the name of a physics professor, Yates, at Princeton who is about to start accepting female students. She thanks him and he leaps.

He arrives to have a man telling him in very serious tones the plan to steal a statue and kill everyone on site.

Quantum Leap Season 2 Episode 3 Quotes

I have also seen things that are hard to explain and harder to believe.

Ben

Jenn: Here we go. Ian’s theories about E.T.
Ian: You do realize that it’s a statistical inevitability that other forms of life exist in this universe.
Magic: I’m a believer.
Jenn: But you’re so reasonable.
Magic: Being leapt into changes one’s perspective on life’s possibilities.
