RalphAngel Bordelon is newly out of prison in Louisianna and is trying to care for his 6-year-old son, Blue who is living with his Aunt Vi. When money is tight, RalphAngel robs a convenience store and tries to give the money to his aunt and his father to help with the bills.
Nova Bordelon is a journalist, activist, and herbalist in Louisianna, who provides marijuana to select people. She’s been having a long term affair with a married police detective and is planning a rally against police brutality.
Charley West (Nova and RalphAngel’s sister) lives in LA. She’s married to Davis West, a basketball star and they share a teenage son, Micah. Charley now works to help Davis with his image and career as he’s team Captain for the LA Gladiator’s basketball team.
Charley’s father, Ernest, asks her to come back home for a visit and to help him make some decisions concerning the family farm but Charley doesn’t have the time. Some of Davis’ team members are being accused of collectively raping a woman in a hotel room. Davis worries this will derail any hopes of a championship season.
Charley helps Davis and the team negotiate the PR during the scandal, until video comes out showing that Davis groped the semi-conscious woman and carried her into the hotel room with the rest of the guys from the team. Charley storms onto the court during a game, screaming, “What did you do?” at the husband she’s always supported.
RalphAngel’s son, Blue misses his mother and has trouble getting other kids to come to his birthday party because he doesn’t have a trampoline, until his teacher, Ms. Velez agrees to come too. The party is in full swing when Ernest, Blue’s grandfather has a stroke and is rushed to the hospital. Ms. Velez agrees to watch Blue while the rest of the family stays by Ernest side.
Blue’s mother approaches RalphAngel, saying she’s no longer using drugs, is getting a good job and wants to see her son again. RalphAngel refuses to let her back into their lives. Later, he brings Blue to visit Ernest in the hospital.
Charley and her son, Micah, arrive at the hospital just after Ernest dies. Everyone is devastated. It turns out, Ernest secretly took a job and stopped planting sugar cane on the family farm. He never told anyone in the family.
