Recap

In the future, Jack D is manning the grill and joking about how he's sure his partner is worried because he's blind, but he's fine. He says the sell takes him back to that day. He has a flashback of Toby and Kate warning him not to get too close and himself crying. (There are no visuals, just audio)

In the past, Jack P comes home and finds out the kids are already asleep. He plans to take them to the movies this weekend for dad time.

Toby is leaving for his job. Jack D cries. Cat Stevens' Fathers and Sons plays in the background (great song choice, although Cat in the Cradle would fit the situation better) with a montage of Toby not being able to get home at various times.

Meanwhile, Kevin is woken up by Madison calling. We see repeated scenes of Kevin coming in the mornings to seeing the twins.

Randall talks about how taking Deja driving will force her to talk to him.

Kate is glad for Kevin's help, though Kevin is upset that he missed Frannie eating carrots again. Toby comes home. Kevin suggests he go to the store and get them food. Toby and Kate already have plans and a sitter lined up. Kevin is going to rehearsal anyway. He says Manny the Reboot is a good distraction. Kevin seems sad as he watches Toby and Kate with the kids.

At the movie theatre, the kids are overexcited. Randall worries they'll run out of candy. Katie asks if Jack will live at work forever.

Meanwhile, Kevin has a hard time at the Manny with a monologue about how his kids make him whole. The actor who plays the Manny now thinks this'll be a really nice moment. Kevin tells him he feels weird talking to the dolls when he didn't get to spend time with his real twins. The actor invites him out after work.

Toby comes in with gifts just as Kate has put Haley down for her nap. Toby has a beeping football for Jack. Kate says this is going to wind Jack up before his nap. Also Toby doesn't need to bear gifts every time he comes.  He has a box for Kate too. It's a purse and a gift card for her hair. He says she should go get her hair done. She's worried about Toby remembering their schedules.

Randall is teaching Deja to drive. Deja does not want to listen to his music. They put on music and she starts driving. Randall is glad they found time to do this. Deja gets a text from Malik and Randall hears that she slept with Malik.

At the movies, Jack has fallen asleep. Kevin is bored by the movie and leaves.

Grown up Kevin is not drinking. His co-star wants him to go to some band with her and he doesn't know what she's talking about.  Kevin gets a video text of Frannie taking her first steps. He says he has to go.

Tony is nervous about the sitter. Kate says she is amazing. Kate says that Jack is cranky because he didn't have a nap thanks to Toby. She and Toby start arguing. Toby says Kate should go ahead and he will stay here to make sure Jack goes to bed. Kate is upset that Toby isn't going to her recital.

Jack awakens and discovers Kevin is gone. The clerk outside is stoned but thinks Kevin is in the mall.  They find him there with Rebecca. Rebecca had put their phone number in Kevin's shoes.

Philip tells Kate that this was one of the best recitals ever. He's disappointed that he didn't get to meet Toby. Philip thinks kids are terrible. He also tells Kate a story of how he and his ex fought over hanging up bath towels and he knew it was over when they stopped talking about it.

Kevin comes to see Madison who wondered what he is doing here. Frannie is asleep already. She can't change her sleep schedule for everything that happens. Kevin is upset. Madison doesn't understand why he's upset.

Jack feels he failed Kevin. Rebecca tells him about the crazy day they had yesterday. It was terrible until a ladybug landed on their windshield and that's what the kids remembered at bedtime.

Beth tells Randall that Deja is in love. Randall says so there shouldn't be consequences? Beth says there will be but the point is that Deja is not a child anymore. She's taking her to get birth control.

Kevin and Toby bond over their difficulties with child rearing. Toby has a weird analogy about squares and triangles. Triangles are the most stable. Maybe Kevin should stop thinking of his family as square. NEither Kevin nor Toby has any idea what Toby is talking about.

More music and Jack sets up stuff for the kids to watch a movie at home and have ice cream sundaes.

Randall comes into Deja's room. She doesn't want to talk about this with him. Randall admits in his mind Deja was still the little girl he first met.. Maybe he's having a hard time because he missed the first 12 years of her life. He needs her to be patient while he wraps his head around the fact that she's growing up. However, she is only a junior in high school and cannot go to Boston any time soon. Deja says that's going to be a problem.

Kevin texts someone to see if they're up and then makes a call. He calls Cassidy and she wants to know why he's calling. It was either her or the young co-star.

Toby is getting ready to leave. Kate has bought him non-fat frozen yogurt. It's tough without him here. Toby says he knows. He should be following her lead. Toby has a photo of a grill he wants to buy. He thinks they should make memories together when he is here.

In the future, Jack D has finished making food on the same grill. His wife says its the symbol of the day his parents' marriage blew up

Jack tucks Kevin in. Rebecca says see, this is what the memory will be: the day Dad made sundaes. Jack gets some sort of phone call that seems upsetting. He tells Rebecca that his mom just died.

This Is Us Season 6 Episode 3 Quotes

The exciting news is that Frannie ate a carrot. I know about this because Madison sent me a carrot emoji, not because I was actually there to witness it.

Kevin

Jack: How did I become that dad who leaves before breakfast and doesn't come home til after dinner?
Rebecca: My dad worked a lot and I still love him.
Jack: Comparing me to your dad isn't helping.
