The Good Wife Season 7 Episode 1 Review: Bond

Critic's Rating: 4.7 / 5.0
4.7

When The Good Wife Season 6 ended, I wasn’t sure where the show would go from there.

Alicia had won the State’s Attorney General election only to have it torn away from her amid a scandal. She was shut out of the law firm she helped create and she waffled between two men, both of whom ended up walking away.

But The Good Wife Season 7 Episode 1 has restored my faith in Alicia Florrick who is getting an education in the other aspects of the justice system.

Nothing set the tone quite like the judge telling the poor schmucks in lock-up that they may think they’re poor, but they were not poor enough for a public defender. Instead they got about 60 seconds to explain their plight to a bar attorney.

Alicia had no idea what she was getting into, but luckily for everyone except her first few clients, she’s a quick study.

The only person willing to hire Alicia Florrick was Louis Canning, and as much as I dislike the character, it was kind of fun having him be the devil on Alicia’s shoulder.

Back home, Grace was entertainingly adept at being Alicia’s assistant. It was good to see her do something other than hide in her room or debate religion with her mother. In small doses, this new version of Grace could be a lot of fun. The girl’s got more game than I expected.

The biggest disappointment was how little we saw of Diane, but with such a varied and talented cast, I’ll accept that they can’t focus on everyone at once. Also, it was so much fun watching Alicia tangle with David Lee once again…

David Lee: Alicia, what are you doing here? I thought you were working as a bond court pimp.

Jane Curtin did a wonderful job as the judge who rolled her eyes right along with the audience at the ridiculous battle of the experts. For anyone who has ever had their sticky notes fall off right when they needed them, this story was amusing. Of course most of us don’t put our sticky notes on $8 million paintings!

Luca Quinn swooped in with some common sense law at exactly the right moment. The brutal pace of bond court must make it necessary to think quick on her feet. Although we’ve only seen her in this episode, I’m suddenly rooting for her to be Alicia’s new partner.

As much as I loved the story lines surrounding Alicia and the aftermath of her scandal, it was Eli and Peter who provided the most shocking twist.

No one was more excited than Eli when Alicia gave Peter the go ahead to run for national office. The man was positively radiating glee. Perhaps that’s what made what Peter did all the harder to swallow.

I couldn’t believe it when Peter ousted Eli for Ruth Eastman. I think Eli summed it up best in this The Good Wife quote…

Eli: When you were polling nothing, when you were banging your Ethics Coordinator, your freaking Ethics Coordinator! I stood by you.

🔗 permalink: When you were polling nothing, when you were banging your Ethics Coordinator, your freaking…

Leave it to Peter to look the man who has been nothing but loyal to him and look Eli in the eye and tell him he’s got an inflated sense of his own self worth. That was the equivalent of waving a red flag in front of a bull. Peter had better watch his backside.

Not only does this twist give us Eli vs. Peter, it may also give us Eli teaming up with Alicia to do it. Eli gave her the heads up on what was coming her way with the new campaign advisor…

Eli: They need to make you a wife again.

🔗 permalink: They need to make you a wife again.

Alicia Florrick is tired of apologizing, and she’s tired of coming in second. When life kicks you around long enough, you either crumble or grow stronger. By this point, I think Alicia’s backbone should be made of steel.

From the looks of this premiere, I think this season of The Good Wife Season 7 may be the best one yet.
