90210 Season Premiere Review: "Senior Year, Baby"

by at . Comments

School was back in session on the season three premiere of 90210. We don't simply know this because Dixon and Teddy kept yelling out "Senior Year, Baby!" - but because someone took an eraser and wiped many of the show's storylines clean.

The series started from scratch in a lot ways, manufacturing brand new developments that added to 90210's fluidity problem, yet may prove to be promising if the drama can actually stick with certain developments and see them through.

Loving Senior Life

For instance, I certainly didn't see the death of Javier coming (and the show made him a major jerk in about 10 minutes so we'd forget about his demise quickly) but it opens up an intriguing internal dilemma for Adrianna.

Can anyone of us truly say we wouldn't have done the same thing as she did? Or at least thought very seriously about it?

Then there's Teddys' knee injury. We all know where this character's storyline is going, so it's more worth noting how uncomfortable he looked in front of Naomi's half-naked body than it is to focus too much on the likely end of his tennis career.

Truth is, the show put Teddy and Silver together far too quickly and there's no chemistry between the pair. I don't care that he's gay and I don't care when they fight. Do you?

I do like Ivy and Dixon, however, which is why I wish the series would let this relationship actually marinate for a bit before coming up with a random obstacle for the two to deal with. Suddenly, Ivy has a male BFF... and she fantasizes about him... and he's sleeping with her mother?!? Ummm... okay. Just seems like a random person to insert into a relationship that I was rooting for to slowly develop.

By far, though, the worst handled storyline involved Annie (big shocker there, right?). We're meant to believe she literally didn't speak to Liam all summer long? She didn't even know about Jasper and his blown-up boat?!? Come on. This was clearly an attempt to manufacture tension in order to build up that supposedly hot kiss between her and Liam. It may be sad but true: that hit-and-run, which went absolutely nowhere, has ruined the character of Annie forever.

Any guesses on what that internship lady is up to? Who did she call and what did they discuss?

Hello, Oscar

Finally, we get to Naomi. Let's give props to 90210 for giving itself such an ambitious topic to handle as rape. Will it be able to pull it off with the respect and gravity it deserves? We can't judge just yet, but it's making a point of hitting viewers over the head with the messages its trying to send.

For example: In case the striptease was not enough for us to understand that Naomi is in major denial and going to the opposite extreme to compensate for what happened, we got that speech about how sex is just a physical act. It's not hard to see how this will play out: Naomi will come clean at some point, no one will believe her, but then Mr. Cannon will eventually get what's coming to him.

I have no problem with a somewhat predictable storyline, as long as those involved make me care enough about their struggle. I'm sure AnnaLynne McCord is perfectly nice, but my job is to strictly go by what I see on screen - and she just can't pull this role off. She's a terrible actress.

What did you think of the episode?

"Oh and let me go ahead and predict the rest of the season.
Naomi is going to go public with the rape but not before Mr. Rapist teacher tries something with Silver to validate her accusation. Ivy is going to leave Dixon right before she finds our the Aussi is doing her Mom. Adrianna is going to develop a conscience in enough time to ruin her career. Teddy and Silver are going to make it through the season but Silver is going to be faced with the decision of leaving him to go to some great film school on the east coast."
It's so funny how wrong these predictions turned out:
Mr. Cannon (rapist teacher) did not try something with Silver that validated the accusation. Silver tried something on Mr. Cannon in an attempt to validate the accusation (which didn't work). Dixon leaves Ivy before she finds out Oscar (aussie) is doing her mom. Adrianna did not develop a conscience, but maybe will now that her career is over. Teddy is gay, and so silver and his relationship is doomed!
PS: Annie committed a hit and run felony as an underage driver. FYI: Minors are treated differently than adults...

Teddy isn't gay, nothing from this show has ever eluded to that. Imagine your girlfriends best friend is a drunken mess parading in front of a group of guys about to get gang raped. That was a horrible actors attempt at portraying a mixture of shame and compassion. Secondly, Dixon isn't a jerk and he's not selfish. He's the loser who gets dissed by every single girl he dates despite his being an amiable sweet heart. I also hate Annie's character. Who murders someone and hides it for a year and then get a summer of hour arrest and probation. I mean, I understand the economy is bad and their is a prison overcrowding problem in Cali but this is out of control. I saw the relationship with Liam manifesting in season 2 and I figured it was going to happen. These kids are crossing swords so often that they all probably have the same strain of Herpes. Ivy is douche bag because she made this whole fuss last season about not being Dixon's number one and as soon as he makes her the priority she's starts acting all crazy. Oh yea, and I hate the way the writers have Dixon telling Ivy he loves her after being together for a summer and he spent 92 days of that summer away from her. Like really ?!?! The actress that plays Naomi is horrible and to give her such a challenging roll to play is foolish. Oh and let me go ahead and predict the rest of the season.

didn't dixon leave to go to Australia with Ivy and Laurel at the end of season 2? And now he didn't go after all? I'm confused, help! I agree with most things in your review though, Annie's character was, in my opinion, annoying and unnecessary from the start of season 1 but the fact that we wasted an entire year hoping for the hit and run storyline to unfold and cause more problems, is sad.
Liam and Annie are horrible together, and I can't wait how pathetic her relationship with Liam's half brother will be. I liked her better when she was with Jasper.
Ivy's new BFF is seriously annoying (apart from his accent) and you're right, they could've waited a couple of episodes to introduce him and another few to reveal his relationship with Laurel - that picture made me nauseous by the way.
I also think that the writers made a huge mistake, revealing Teddy's sexuality so early, because I can't look at him anymore without frowning and sighing, knowing he's gay. Poor Silver!
And lastly, Naomi - I actually think she did a good job in the earthquake scene and I think it's a really good move for 90210 having the rape storyline, I hope it's not going to disappear like the hit and run.

Lets face it , the person who write or runs this site is Very Anti-Annie. i happen to love the Character from episode 1 to now. I am not a fan of Naomi , she thinks the world belong to her and that if she dates a guy he is off limits as if she branded or created him , so stupid. i really hated Naomi is season 2 but hopefully she will be a more likable character in this season if not then the Naomi Character is Ruined forever!

@mmmmmMcSteamy: Of course it's one man's opinion. It's my review. I wrote it and I always welcome feedback.

"I'm sure AnnaLynne McCord is perfectly nice, but my job is to strictly go by what I see on screen - and she just can't pull this role off. She's a terrible actress." And yet people who watched her other guestings thinks she's done a good job playing vixen like the one she had on Nip/Tuck. Well at least Annalynne is sure to have researched about the material given to her as she is supposedly a human rights advocate.

The season premier was insulting to the audience. I hope viewers delete 90210 from their DVRs. It's appauling that the season finale's conflicts were resolved in the first 10 minutes of the show. Resolved via corny dialogue without inclusion of the story. Next time let us read a synopsis and save everyone the hour. The viewer should be down-right offended after last night, and I refuse to believe that the audience is shallow enough to accept this trash. There is also a miniscule percentage of people out there that would have thought twice about stealing someone else's work. Who can face a mirror after behaving in such a detestable manner? Someone just took an eraser and wiped the show off the air.

I loved the Wilson scenes.

This review is clearly based on one opinion.... Annie's character is not ruined forever.

This episode was better than most of season 2 but overall it's still one of the worst shows currently on air. The storylines are so cliche and most of the actors simply aren't actors. If Liam, Annie and Ivy's BFF get stuck in a freezer and slowly freeze to death it might help get 90210 back on its feet.
