Gossip Girl Review: Royal Wedding Dreams, Awful Schemes

at . Comments

Blair Waldorf got engaged last night on Gossip Girl, while Chuck and Serena vied for the honor of worst person ever. Just another night on the Upper East Side!

As Gossip Girl episodes go, there were certainly plenty of highlights in "The Princesses and the Frog," yet the overall narrative felt sorely lacking to me at times.

The Gossip Girl I like featured strong characters who are both funny and enjoyable to watch. Sure, there's scheming and backstabbing, but they're not ALL bad.

Somewhere along the line, though, the plot lines became really twisted and confusing and the relationships too tangential. Rant over. Let's break down Monday:

S the Back Stabber

Serena sucks. Sorry, but it's true, although you can blame the writers for this. Yes, she's jealous of Blair and sort of mad about Dan. But this is not the S we know.

Serena called Louis' mother to sabotage Blair. Then Serena sent Blair's dirty laundry (because Louis' mom can't read Gossip Girl) to further ruin her friend's chances.

All the while, she lied to Blair's face, except for when she defended Chuck after the party. That was honest at least. S probably believes Blair made the wrong call.

Chuck is on the brink. Not only of going completely off the rails and ending up shot in a seedy alley again, but of running out of excuses for us to make for him.

The Dark Knight broods. He is tormented, and has been dealt a lot of bad breaks. He can't handle emotional situations and drowns himself in booze and sorrow.

The stuff with his father - who we learned had an affair with Avery Thorpe - is not his fault, or something we would wish on anyone. It's gotta mess with his said.

But honestly, Chuck's behavior leaves little room for redemption at this point.

I mean, for someone who loves Blair SO much, he terrified, embarrassed and degraded her - BEFORE he forced himself on her and put his fist through a window.

That's how you treat your dream girl? This was worse than his usual efforts to crush Blair's soul to win her back, but it's not like he hadn't gone that route before.

It's very hard, if not impossible, to "root" for Chair now.

Even Nate can't find it within his man bangs anymore. He pointed out that Chuck's relationship with B is not normal, and blatantly chose Raina over him at the end.

Dair is all but forgotten. At least they were last night. After a slow, well-written lead-up to the Dan and Blair hookup, it's like nothing ever happened with them.

We like Dan, and have no problem with Charlie per se, but we just feel kind of used. Perhaps more importantly, GG needs to bring back Dan and Nate's bromance.

Princess Blair

Blair Waldorf is engaged! I couldn't care less that the royal family doesn't approve, but I worry more that she's been dating Prince Louis for about four days.

Blair's life may not be the fairy tale she thinks it is, but I admire her for wanting to spend it with a guy who treats her right and who genuinely makes her happy.

Louis is nice to her, and handsome. Gotta give him that. But is she really following her heart? Is she following what her brain says her heart is supposed to feel?

I love you to pieces, B, but remember, it's okay to dial it back a little. Prince William and Kate Middleton were together for the better part of 10 years. Ten years.

Think they'll actually get married? Do you want them to after Chuck's antics? At this point I'm willing to give the prince a chance, but suggest a long engagement.

Charlie is a regular Upper East Sider. Florida Schmorida. Between her elaborate plans to woo Dan, manipulating V and name-dropping Bing, girl's a natural!

You gotta love that Charlie insisted on confronting Vanessa alone at the end, and basically showed that even an outsider can thoroughly outshine an outcast.

How long until this new crazy side comes out in a bad way, however? Will her feelings for Dan erupt into a huge mess if he decides to pursue Blair (please yes)!

Rufus got a job! What house husband?! Hang up the waffle iron and the butler outfit, because the Fonz is totally going to be the manager of a band called Panic!

Vanessa is leaving at the end of the semester to study abroad. Approve.

What did you think of last night's Gossip Girl? Can you find anything positive to say about Chuck? What is Charlie's endgame? Leave a comment below to discuss!

still think that chair is endgame...to all who say that it would take so long to bring them back together...why?
even if he would have really hurt her (no, he didnt!)?
the thing is, if the writers want this show to look like real life, it wont take too long to bring them back together...the most famous example: Rihanna and Chris Brown...he hurt her, he punched in her face, he hit her...but some weeks later she was seen with him again...her "rated r" album...every single song about her limitless love...and last but not least..."love the way you lie"...thats the song that comes to my mind everytime i see chair...really...every single line in both songs is so true...it fits so good to chair...not since last nights episode...since S1E7...for example: chuck: "I cant breathe, but i still fight", "high of love, drunk from the hate", "wait, where you goin? i am leavin you, no you aint, come back, we are running right back, here we go again, it is so insane", "but you lied again, now you get to watch her leave", "now I know we said things, did thing that we didnt mean, and we fall back into the same patterns, same routine, but your temper is just as bad as mine is, but when it comes to love, you are just as blinded, baby please come back", "all i know is, i love you too much to walk away", "I am tired of the games, i just want her back", "baby, without you i am nothing, i am so lost, hug me", "no matter how many knives we put in each others backs, that we will have each others backs", "together we move mountains" or for blair: "just gonna stand there and hear me cry, but thats all right because i love the way you lie", "on the first page of our story the future seemed so bright, then this thing turned out so evil, i dont know why i am still surprised", "but you will always be my hero even though you have lost your mind", and the most important: "so maybe i am a masochist, i try to run, but i dont want ever leave!".....and rihanna and chris brown, this is a famous example, but there are so many real ones...i know so many people who are violent in their relationships, i mean really violent, sober people...who really hurt their girlfriends, but they always go back...because they love their men...that is why i believe in the chair-endgame-stuff...
and you know that i am right...

I agree. Chuck is abusive of Blair. He does not treat her well. He should be kept apart from her to make her happiness possible,
still want Blair with Dan though, Louis is just a dream, not the decision that would make her stronger independent woman., I want her to be the woman she can be not somebody's puppy.

@Jenn THANK YOU! How girls here are slightly defending Chuck is beyond me. Yes Chuck is an amazing tv character, he brings the good and the bad and it's entertaining to watch as a viewer. But defending what he did by claiming lame excuses like "alcohol" and "needs help" is just ridiculous. Yes, he needs help, but 1. doesn't excuse ANY of his actions and 2. he's not going to get help as long as he refuses to help himself. Abuse is not always physical, it's psychological too. The way Chuck judge Blair for her friendship with Dan and her relationship with Louis by bringing her down was abuse. The way he almost punched her (but punched the window instead) is abuse. He might not have hit her, but he scared the crap out of her cause for that one second, she thought she was the one facing his fist. Anyways, most of the time women in abusive relationships keep saying that it's the guy who "needs help", who's "not like this usually", who's "love me no matter what"... Very, very sad.

I felt so bad for Chuck. :( I just wish Blair would have given in to him. They love each other so much. I really don't like the way they made him go so far. He loves her so much. He went off the deep end. He has to rebound and fight for her. They have him constantly making mistakes. It is time for a turn around.

There is only one acronym appropriate for last nights episode...WTF. The Princess and The Frog definatly captured my attention while it was playing, but after thinking about it alittle more, the writters are really effing up the show. I basically have something bad to say about every character. I agree that Chuck would have NEVER done that sober, ever. I always assumed in the end that Chuck would win Blair back after almost proposing to her last season, but at this point i have no idea how theyre going to get him back on anyones good side (this comeing from a huge Chair supporter). Even though i'm not a huge Serena fan to begin with, she would have never done something to hurt anyone, let alone her supposed best friend back in season one. They had her trying to hard, that's something Blair would do. It only would work for Blair because from the beginning she had been precieved as a bitch, but a likeable bitch at that. Serena is really losing her likeability. Nate ditching Chuck for a girl? Instead of staying by him and trying to help? After everything that duo has been though, you'd think Nate would atleast try alittle harder. Don't even get me started on Raina. Seriously writters? her whole part in the show is completely separate from everyone eleses and her realtionship with Nate feels so forced and unromantic. I don't like her character AT ALL. Vanessa fucking Abrams just needs to be killed off the show. She's annoying and hated by EVERYONE. Her and Dan aren't friends anymore and even if they tried to be it would just feel to forced. Charlie is cute and catching on fast to the ways of a skilled upper east sidder and all but i feel like she is very unneeded and not doing anything for the show. Dan hasn't really done anything terrible but in last night's episode his character was alittle non-existant to me. Prince Louis is such a cutie pie, I can't really say anything bad about him. Blair is so swept up in this fairy tale in her head, which doesn't bother me to much (totally biased about Blair, die-hard B fan) but sometihng isn't right with her... They're really bring Jack back into this? Don't the writters realize it's alittle been-there-done-that? like 4 times?. ugh. oh yeah and I FUCKING LOVE ERIC. he can do no wrong. His part in the show is they only one that hasn't been changed to much since season one. ahhhh season one. it had so much potential and charm. Chuck was a perv and a player with a secret romantic side. Blair was Queen B(itch) and was more concerened with real world things (well compared to now that is). Serena was a sweet, careing reforming ex-party girl, Dan was the outsider coming into a new world and finding his place. Jenny was actually likeable and pretty. Vanessa wasn't unbareable to watch. Nate was a sexy stoner that actually had an interesting story line. (I'm pretty sure they just keep him on the show now for his man bangs and pretty face, don't get me wrong i'd totally stop watching if he left the show). I know that they were still in high school and the beginning IS usually better, but still can you blame me for missing "the good old gossip girl days"?
Step it up writters before you loose your viewers!

man serena was evil in this one. she's so hypocritical. it's like god get over yourself woman. i can't remember any stolen glances or moments like that between dan and her since they became co-brother and sister. sheesh. i dont think he's dreaming of you girlfran. it's okay to move on from 11th grade (good shot blair). speaking of which, i love how blair knew what was up. it's so cool to see her being princess like and yet still incredibly on top of schemes. chuck. how awfully disappointing. ive been against chair for a while now, but honestly, even if that forcing upon had never taken place..why on earth would he think proposing to blair, drunk, at someone else's function, would ever work? does he know her at all? yes of course blair would LOVE that. it's so romantic! geez chuck get it together. stop being defined by your father. you're not him. dan, are you stupid? how can you not see through charlie? she's about as transparent as glass. holy smokes. she's wacko. i can't wait till georgina shows her what's up. Eric! why on earth didn't you tell Dan what serena was doing?! i thought they were friends, plus it wouldve been adorable if dan went to blair telling her what she was up to. all in all, good episode i thought. acting was a little forced for leighton i think. plus ed was a little iffy as well.

I'm honestly unable to say something bad about Chuck at this point. Not when everybody has turned his back on him. I felt SO sorry for him all the time when he tried to keep Blair because his actions were so desperate. You could see how he needed to make believe himself what he actually said. About Blair being his and all this stuff. She is/was his last constant. And it was ripped away from him. Of course he tried to hold on with all his power. Who woudn't? Chuch is really all alone at this moment. I never was in such a situation but I can imagine it hurts like hell and makes you do things you regret later especially if your whole life is crashing down on you at the same time.
But I don't blame Blair at all. She is damn right to give him the boots even if I think she should have done this for other reasons. Because this time he actually didn't do anything wrong. I mean she forgave him for trading her for a hotel and now suddenly doesn't want him anymore...why excactly? but ok I agree that both need to be seperate for a while. Grow up and then find together again for a happily ever after^^ But back to Chuck: Honestly I had to laugh a bit as I remembered the spoiler about Chuck hurting Blair "There will be blood"...Well it was a scratch^^ and he didn't want to hurt her. He didn't hit HER he hit a window. That's a difference. And he would never have gone through with forcing himself on her. Not anymore, not with Blair.
So my sympathy totally lies with Chuck here and I'll forgive him the minute he apologizes for scaring Blair.
So I'm not for abusing women in any kind of way just to be clear but I don't think you can call this abusing. And I mean Chuck did really things much worse than this in my opinion. And may I add how much I loved Ed Westwick acting skills^^. He played broken Chuck so convincing, my face constantly was in pain. If I get wrinkles now I know who to blame.:)
And I liked the moment when Blair shut the door right in Serenas face. I agree S. was so OOC it wasn't even funny anymore!
And if we are talking about deceitful bitches then I need to mention Charlie. I didn't like her the moment she stand in this foyer of Lily's and acted all so innocently. Because it screamed "dangerous" in my face and now Dan is stuck with a crazy person. So as much as I don't like Vanessa I took her side for once on this!
The bottom line is that I found this an amazing episode My favourite so far on this last 3 episodes!

@joannne: you have a real good point there and I really like what you write about Dan.
You are so right about him, since the 1x4, he has been there for Blair (which he really did not have to do because she was so snobbish and mean to him in this episode)
and gave her advice and his view of the whole thing. He also quit immediately after he saw that Blair´s date was the prince, that says a lot about Dan.

ok guys you all know im chair obsessed. but honestly, that episode totally made chuck look HORRIBLE! ok seriously gg writers, can you cut chuck a break? i feel so effin BAD FOR HIM!!! i just wanna dive into the tv and hug him all the time! poooor baby i kept repeating the whole epi haha. my reaction to the scene? rolling on the floor crying. my mom came in and watched the last couple minutes with me, even though i told her to leave me alone in my shrine (my tv room). my mom asked why and i was like SHES GETTING ENGAGED TO THE WRONG GUY!! haha and my mom was like Rebecca, they wont end up together its superficial {whatever that means} love. and im like, I KNOW BUT IT SEEMS SO FAR AWAY!! haha that was it. didn't go to bed till 11. i couldn't stop seeing chuck's sad face everytime i shut my eyes.

OMG. Can't. Believe. This.
Blair engaged?! I was totally amazed when I saw it... Aww unbelievable!! I'm happy she finally found a guy who makes her happy and treat her well.
Anyway, I feel so sorry for chuck. He's been through a lot of things in the last episodes and that's the last thing could have happened to him...
But I believe what Nate said: don't worry, Blair is not going to end up with that guy. Everybody knows.
