Wilfred Review: Mambo Italiano

at . Comments

Love is a willingness to sacrifice.

And "Sacrifice" Ryan Newman did by the end of this episode. He could have gone off to Italy and been happy in the near future, but Jenna is the love of his life, which we have all knew since the first episode. Ryan is willing to sacrifice some of his own happiness for love, and he may be a better man for that.

This was a great showcase for Elijah Wood, who doesn't get nearly enough credit for the fantastic job he is doing on Wilfred. I'm just as much to blame as anyone, but it remains difficult to note his performance when Jason Gann is so hilarious week after week.

Problems in a Store

Wood has created this character in Ryan that is so screwed up yet so likable, that the audience has no choice but to continue to root for him to get better. Watching Ryan have the best day of his life with his Italian beauty was extremely heartwarming, which made it bittersweet when he ended up choosing to stay with Jenna and Wilfred.

Having said all of that, Gann still knocked it out of the park once again. I mean, can you honestly sit there and think that anyone can do better than "undies on the face?"

As always, there were plenty of humorous moments where Wilfred blurred the lines: wearing shades, sun block and speaking Italian on the beach, preparing for Italy with a camera, backpack and fanny pack, and my personal favorite, Wilfred pounding shots of toilet water because he let Jenna down.

Some other non-quotable highlights: Anytime Wilfred talking to Bear over the covert channel of communication, Wilfred pretending he's not friends with Ryan only to proclaim it loudly after hearing Ryan was selling the TV, Jenna's laugh attack while trying to do the news high, and, of course, Bear as Ryan's dream lawyer.

There is only one episode left in the first season of Wilfred. Now, after checking out some of our favorite Wilfred quotes from "Sacrifice" below, let us know what you thought of the episode.

Wilfred: Well, what have we here? And what is that thing above them with the mouth and eyes? | permalink
Ryan: I was gonna get it on Kindle, but then people couldn't see how deep I am. | permalink
Ryan: I'm not sure spending your days watching gruesome cat deaths on YouTube counts as protecting Jenna. | permalink
Wilfred: She'll be fine. She'll probably have a team of highly trained security specialists surround her at all times. This is the Noon News we're talking about. | permalink
Wilfred: Ryan I've always had your best interest at heart, and I've never asked for anything in return...except for a bunch of stuff. | permalink

A return to form.

Great episode. But I would have preferred Ryan to go to italy. Maybe they could have used it as a season finale, and let us know what happened at the begining of next season.
A little competition between this georgeous italian woman and Jenna could have been fun. The only think I dislike about this choice that it makes jenna seem like a selfish superficial and egocentric girl. I used to like her, but this episode, her behavior and much more people around her behaviors made me loose much of the sympathy I had for her. Insisting on her jalousy, that can be felt during the garage sale for example, would have been better. It would have shown more obviously that she cares about Ryan. It looks more and more like she's nice only to manipulate him. I dont think it's a good direction. Jenna's boyfriend can be a jerk but is not a bad guy, in fact, I'm starting to have more sympaty for him than for Jenna. It gives some depth to the show, but at the same time, having a real bad guy, somebody we could love hating and despiting would be great. Anyway, as usual, it was very funny, and I will miss this show a lot waiting next season.
