Private Practice Review: Whatever Happens, I Have You

by at . Comments

It should come as no surprise by now. Private Practice has brought its A-game all season long, and Shonda and company delivered once again tonight with another strong installment, "Andromeda."

Sam continued to try caring for his sister, but her mental condition was making it quite a struggle. I’ll admit that I haven’t been entirely invested in this storyline simply because there has been far too much already going on in the past few episodes. However, this all changed when things got intense and Corrine struck Sam in the head with a candlestick holder and then fell through the window.

Addison on Andromeda

To say the least, I definitely didn’t see that coming. Another surprise was Amelia’s pregnancy. She’s been to Hell and back, and I expected that she would take a backseat after all that’s happened. Then again, I assume this would be a case where art imitates life – because word is Caterina Scorsone is expecting her first child. Congrats to the actress!

I’m looking forward to seeing if news of her pregnancy actually affects her relationship with Addison. By the way, how incredible was Sheldon when he said he’d be there for her regardless of whether or not she wanted to keep her baby? He cares for her so much, and I appreciated that he admitted he must work through his feelings and not hold them against Amelia.

There were two special moments that I enjoyed thoroughly:

  1. CharCoop – With Erica’s recovery taking a toll on Mason and Cooper, Charlotte tried to help out by hiring a night nurse so that Cooper could get some rest. I spent most of the installment frustrated with Cooper because I couldn’t figure out how on earth he was taking Charlotte for granted when she had been nothing short of amazing throughout this entire ordeal. Luckily, he finally came to his senses and apologized to her profusely and made it clear that he appreciated her more than ever. She is so unbelievably patient with him, and they are incredible together.
  2. Jaddison – Sparks seriously fly when these two are alone together. Though there were scarcely any Jaddison scenes, that single elevator moment was perfect. I loved that Jake told her exactly what he wanted – all or nothing – and that she’s not ready for him if she’s still pining over Sam. Addie made sure her intentions were clear and replied that she could get ready. On another note, I love that their story is taking time and slow in development. It’s obvious that Jake cares for her very much and he’s quite the gentleman.

I can’t say that I cared too much for the storyline of the pregnant patient with twins. I’ve always loved that Addie rocks when it comes to surgeries, but sometimes it feels like she is always successful. It’s become a bit predictable knowing that she consistently somehow manages to save the day, and this fact causes me to hardly ever be concerned or worried about her patients.

Finally, it’s time for the Violet Annoyance Scale. I’m rating tonight’s episode a solid 7 on the VAS. It all began with her ridiculous discussion with Jake. First, she asked him about his position on casual sex. Then, she ridiculously hinted at knowing about Fiji. Honestly, she can be so irritating! I also have already grown tiresome of hearing and seeing all of the scenes with Violet’s sex life. We get it: she’s having the time of her life, but she’s also still very married. On another note, why wasn’t she just honest with Scott if she was clearly having second thoughts about their arrangement?

She did step up and finally told Pete that she missed what she had with Lucas and him. Apparently, the ball is in Pete’s court now as she’s ready for therapy, but he isn’t just yet. It’s getting harder to care about what happens to these two. The only truly redeeming factor for Violet that I will consider is the fact that she was able to get Cooper to see that he was taking his frustration out on Charlotte.

So, what did you think of "Andromeda?" Hit the comments below, and don’t forget to leave your VAS rating!

Cont'd: Cooper is an outright immature berk who has no adult tendencies at all. Amelia is full of herself and mean-spirited. Charlotte needs to literally kick Cooper's ass while Jake plays it cool and is the least offensive of all these jokers, eh, characters. It’s very annoying how they all seem to jump in at the tail-end of each others conversations in the lunch room, and there is no such thing as a secret. NeNe wised up and bailed out of this 'professional' madhouse. This whole show jumps the shark at almost every turn, twist and episode. Ms. Rhimes genius would really shine if she wrapped this baby/daddy/mama drama up in its entirety. And please get Addison off that analyst’s couch. Enough already!!!

Please cancel this drivel from airing another season. Don't any of these characters have lives or friends outside of the office or away from their beach front backyards? Are they all joined at the hip attending everything together!!! Sam has no pulse, is droll, stiff & boring, except for the episodes involving his sister. Sam & Addison never had realistic chemistry in their relationship. His delivery was flat and too low-keyed as well as uneasy to watch. Addison sleeps with anyone looking her way, and is an 'Easy Knees Denise' joke of a character. Violet is a self-righteous busy-body whose personality goes beyond the pale. Her character became more pathetic after she started shagging that 20-something year old paramedic. And what doctor in the U.S. stalks their patients, more or less makes house calls??? Pete has anger issues but is rather cool. Too bad he will not be returning next season. Sheldon makes me puke with his righteous, analytical diatribes. I bet that Addie will end up raising Ameilas baby! It would be one way of getting a baby of her own and I don't know if Ameilia wants the baby or not! (Possibly because it's Ryans.) Hopefully Addie is getting over Sam.. he is never going to come around about having a child with her. I loved the elevator scene with Addie/Jake! :D Violet did look very childish flirting with Jake as if she had to ask specificaly him how he felt about casual sex! I can't imagine me doing that at work! lol! Shonda said that the Addison/baby issue will be resolved by the seasons end!...looking forward to it! Why are they taking 2 weeks off??? It seems like they just came back and were off a month over Christmas! Whatever happened to the shows being on from Sept - June with a week or two max. off at Christmas time?!!

The only reason they made Amelia be pregnant is because Caterina Scorsone (the actress that plays Amelia) is pregnant! So, congratulations to Caterina! I never liked Sam and Addison together, they just do not want the same things in life and it would never work between them. I love Jake and Addison together because they share their wants in life, and Jake is such a gentleman and takes it slow with Addison, which is what she needs. I think Addison needs to not save the day at some point, it seems like she always is saving both the mom and baby. Charlotte and Cooper are good together and Cooper needs to realize that he cannot spend all day every day with Erica, he needs a break and some time with Charlotte. Pete and Violet need to figure out what is going on between them, I do not like Violet having meaningless sex with Scott.

again, is contraception unheard of, among california physicians? I am all for having babies, but how many "accidents" can these people have?

Kristin from E online just shared the scoop that biracial twins are coming on the show. I have a feeling Addie will get pregnant with Sam's baby(babies?) just when Jake opened up about his feeling for her.

I don't think you have to look any further for the perfect woman for Sam...look up the coast to the north... Yang and Sam would be a crazy power couple, don't'cha think?!?!

I thought Charlotte and Cooper were great, Jake was so great to Addison, and Sam's story with Corinne is really getting better and more intense. It was a good episode for those reasons. But of course, all good things have their flaws. Like what Christina said, is it even a question anymore if Addison's patients get the happy ending that they want? When was the last time Addison failed a patient? Violet and Pete. Oh geez. I don't even know what to say about that but I completely agree on this week's VAS. And as for Amelia's pregnancy - I think that's what I disliked the most about this episode. It came out of nowhere and not in a good way. It felt forced and for me, it's an arc that isn't right for the character and for the entire show. But I guess we'll just see how it goes.

Loved this episode! But Jaddison is on my radar! The look in Addy's eyes when he came close and whispered in her ear " You are not ready" and she was so breathless - I could get ready - priceless! I care for Paramedic Scott more than I care about seeing Violet and Pete back together! He should come work for Seattle Grace Mercy West HP.

The worst thing about this episode was too few Charlotte scenes. And it´s too bad that she´s not having a baby because now Amelia is pregnant.

Private Practice Season 5 Episode 16 Quotes

The only reason I've been getting through this is because I know that whatever happens, I have you.

Cooper

Jake: You're not ready for what I have to offer.
Addison: I could get ready.
Jake: That would be nice.
