The Vampire Diaries Review: A Mother's Nature

at . Comments

Well, The Vampire Diaries proved me wrong tonight: there is something sexier than this week's cover of Entertainment Weekly.

My. Goodness. Gracious. I know it upset both Delena fans and Stelena fans, but let's just give hot props where hot props are due: "Dangerous Liaisons" concluded with the most erotic scene in show history.

Having a Ball Together

But was it a worthwhile scene? Does it really move the story along or does it merely exist to act as an obstacle between Elena and Damon?

It certainly made sense for both characters. Two recently-scorned, vulnerable individuals fall into bed together? Following a slew of shots? Not exactly ground-breaking material there. Many of us have likely made similar decisions and regretted them in the morning.

And, yes, it also fits both characters. Damon is as self-destructive as they come, and - whether she knew the extent of what she was saying or not - Elena did just throw his love back in his face. As for Rebekah? Well, what single gal wouldn't sleep with Damon Salvatore? Moreover, what single gal with a vendetta against Elena would not sleep with Damon Salvatore? Again, perfectly sensible on her part in that regard.

But I can't help but think it feels contrived, coming across as a way for the writers to drag out the love triangle for as long as possible... which actually aligns with the rest of what - dare I say it?!? - was a bad episode of The Vampire Diaries.

It's one thing for very little to happen throughout an hour; I'm all for the occasional slow cooker, the focus on characters here and there over non-stop action. But the romantic teases thrown our way here didn't feel natural. Come on, Caroline would NEVER come close to considering anything with Klaus. Sure, it's interesting that he paints and likes horses and isn't always a violent maniac.

But all the daddy issues in the world can't change what he did to Tyler, who is clearly Caroline's true love. I don't buy any hints otherwise. I just see them as a way to get the Twitterverse buzzing about Klaroline versus Forwood and to get the shippers freaking out when, in reality, we all know Caroline will be with Tyler when he returns.

Then again... what is he doing if he's not following her dad's advice? Where is he? Whatever happens moving Forwood (get it?!?), it likely will NOT be as simple as Tyler simply coming back a cured hybrid and falling into Caroline's bed. Still, relax everyone. No way is she getting with Klaus.

So the romance, or hints at romance, didn't do it for me this week. The waltz? The set-up of both Salvatore brothers serving as Elena's date? Too forced, too dragged out.

Mother Original, however? She was easily the best part of the hour. Do we buy that she really wants to kill her children in order to make up for betraying the natural order of things? I think so. It's hard to believe she'd be lying to Finn, her right-hand son, about offing him and his siblings. That would be downright cruel. But will she actually go through with it? That's another matter.

It's probably easy to concoct a plan when you're chilling on The Other Side for 1,000 years (think she hung out with Anna and Vicki there?). But then to see your flesh and blood in person? Even if those persons are vampires? Esther seemed to be having second thoughts after her chat with the moral Elijah. Either way, we now have another direction in the Original storyline, one that forces multiple characters and agenda to intersect and one whose outcome I can't come close to predicting.

And that's when The Vampire Diaries is at its best.

Quick bites:

  • Kol is totally the male version of Rebekah. I'm itching to kill something. What are we waiting for? Give him time and his humanity may come out, but for now, he's just loving life as a vampire. Or trying to at least.
  • Might Alaric, somehow, be the Mystic Falls Butcher? It doesn't seem to make sense, considering he was actually stabbed, but the show likely wants us to consider that possibility based on the point of view - from a patient's room - it took early on inside the hospital.
  • Then again, a doctor could easily be inside a patient's room, as well. The kind of doctor who, in one Fell swoop, could stake an ex-boyfriend in the woods.
  • Poor Matt. As quarterback of the football team, isn't there some hot cheerleader he can get with? Someone who doesn't come with any supernatural baggage?

What did everyone else think? Have you stopped panting from the Damon and Rebekah sex scene yet? Did this slower episode do it for you? Or, like me, did developments feel both boring and a bit contrived?

I`m a little pissed of the storytelling right now. I´m feeling a little bit reminded to LOST. Remember, everytime when you thought a problem is solved, there are three new one. Season 2 of TVD hadn`t so much action, but it was full of strong storytelling and great development of the main and supporting characters. Now after a great episode follows a stupid one and there are too many lost threads the writers don`t put together again. Well maybe, we have to wait till this sessons end, but for now i can`t see how they could save the sinkin boat. I`m really pissed about Elena how she treats Damon. Really bad move. What`s this stuff with Klaus and Caroline. Sorry, but i don`t want another puppie agein..And there isn`t any chemistry..Where the hell is Katherine?..She forced Stefan to steal the coffins, and kow??..Is she on vacations??..And Stefan, now a depressiv ripper??..Julie, please remind your self how you worked in season 2.

OMG, THIS WAS BY FAR MY FAVORITE EPISODE OF TVD EVERRRRR! I don't care what anyone says but if it wasn't for Klaus, Caroline, and a prospect of Klaroline, I would be so done with this show by now. Freakin Klaus is so cute around her and asdfghjkl, I just want them together ok?
I really don't care about the Stelena/Delena love triangle. They are so boring now. I usually just tune Elena out because ugh, I can't stand her. And I started hating Damon's character since the day he started becoming Elena's doormat. Whatever she says, he does so I'm glad he's going back to his season 1 ways.
Can we have more of Klaus and Caroline? Did anyone notice that NO ONE on this show has ever complimented Caroline on all her qualities like Klaus did in the previous episode? He gave her a dress, diamond bracelet, and freakin drew a picture of her. That's more than anyone has ever done for her.

Bored Now, you actually spend more time commenting on TVD posts, a show that only interests you for a single character, than commenting on any of the other shows you like. I'm all for free speech, but I think that's a problem.

Well at this point I am more interested in keeping the originals around. The dynamic between Elijah and Klaus interests me more than the one between Stefan and Damon at this point. One thing that does strike me is that I am forgetting why it is imperative to get rid of them anyway? Unless Klaus has some diabolical plan he isn't telling us about he seemed to be settling down. Also they seem in control of their blood lust a lot more, I am assuming they could drink without killing like Damon used to? Surely their mum must have noticed the difference. I think it's a conscious move on the writers part and I quite like it. They had us convinced of the 'big bad nature' of the originals and then they show us just enough of their emotional side to make us (well me) root for them not to be destroyed (especially Klaus and Elijah). It will flip again soon, but I like it

Wow, just wow, Elena. The guy just spent three seasons loving you pretty much unconditionally despite a hell of a guilty conscience, risked everything over and over again to keep you safe and all you got is “maybe your love is the problem?
I’m not sure I like Elena anymore; she seems to have got it into her head that she will always be Damon’s one and only, so she can just treat him however suits her best. Come on people, she’s using him! Damon should just walk away, and if he can get some from the hottest vampire in town along the way, well good for him.

Loving Kol right now, we could always use more cocky, handsome bad boys in Mystic falls, they never get old :)

I wish the writers would just put Caroline with Klaus, so that we'll finally be rid of Bored Now :)

I keep seeing things baout vampire diaries trying to copy or rip-off buffy, can anyone give me a few examples of this? Why do people insist on comparing the two, if they're nothing a like. Are these comparisons on vampire diaries posts or is it similar on true blood posts as well? I've never heard twilight being compared to buffy, so why TVD? Both are great shows in their own right, although I did love buffy's villians more, but I like vampire diaries witches more, probably because I couldn't get over the fact that an ordinary human could just somehow become wiccan. I actually enjoyed this episode. Yeas, Elena was wrong, but every now and then a character needs to do something that makes their story all the more compelling like last season when Damon regressed, look at all his progress, for now I still think Delena might be endgame for season 3. I'm assuming there'll be a season 4?

P.s. Adore Klaus chasing Caroline... Candice is such a great actress. I'm sure will one day be a leading actress in some show/movie.

...I think Elena has also had quite a few moments where Stefan has treated her horribly since Klaus came along but the fact that she still clearly feels for him deeply, that she wants him to show her he cares for her alot, says alot. However, I personally don't care if they write in a nice normal relationship for her that was just fun and sexy again... like she had with Stefan in the first season.
