@jlopie1...I agree that ed asner was fantastic last night. I was very impressed with him. And fryer usually I cannot stand but he was okay. He did not annoy me or anything. I just kind of hope he does not keep popping up but he may.
I thought danny did a good job as well. And I like that chin and kono are okay with taking orders from him and dont fight him. That is a real team that works so well together no matter what happens. That is what I love about H50.
Whoops, must have done something wrong - only half my comment posted!
I started to say I gave the episode 5 glorious stars. Ed Asner still has it! Tom Sizemore is deliciously annoying which means he's playing Fryer very well, indeed. Taryn Manning as Mary is back and "trying" to straighten out her life (what Nov. were you refeerring to, Jim? We last saw Mary in Jan. 2011 when she was kidnapped by Noshimuri).
The best part of the episode last night was seeing Danny take charge of the case. With Alex on the mend for awhile, we'll be seeing alot more of Danny, Chin and Kono handling the business as usual. I have no fear that they will be able to keep H5-0 alive and well for the duration. Congrats to all for the Season 3 renewal, as well!

@Amazingalex- No, I'm just predicting your future. Just wait and see, while Alex is gone, Scotty is going to charm you :)
Ok, putting aside the jokes, they are good together.
Hmm, you gave the episode 4 stars, Jim, but I'm not sure you've stated what you didn't like about it to only give it 4. It's a little bit of a lean review this week. You zeroed in on some suspected discrepancies to consistency - namely the use of a "McGarrett" as August March's arresting officer. One of the other commenters has already set you straight on this - not a discrepancy at all but an indication that this is a "reboot" and not a "reprisal" of the original H5-0.
Also, don't know what your point was with the Kaleo and Mary thing. The fact that Mary and Kaleo reappeared in the same episode does not mean a thing to me! I have no idea where you were going with the writers needing to expand their ways of incorporating returning characters...huh?
Did you like the story line? You really don't say much about that. I thought it was a smart, tightly written, well executed plot this week. Joe Halprin is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers for H5-0!
I gave the episode 5

@lena..yeah it was pretty obvious and it was sad cause it was strange that he was not taking the lead in some of the scenes and it was his sisters case. But he did what he had to do and I thought at least danny did a good job at the helm. But your right it was supposed to be a steve/mary epi. It was strange cause in alot of ways I thought he looked better. Now we just need him to get healthy and come back to us as soon as he can.
I was emotional too like you. I guess that is normal since he is the lead and it was strange to not see him playing the lead in some scenes for the first time ever.

Great story and better writing made last nights episode very enjoyable. Loved Ed Esner and it was great seeing Mary again. Steve's absence was pretty noticable in the middle of the episode and we got no real explanation why Danny was taking over. I know it was down to Alex's health issues but the writers could have given some explanation as to why Steve would be taking a back seat to his own sisters investigation.
Fryer was bearable so maybe he's growing on me. I'm finding Danny more irritating as the season goes on and I'm sick of his ranting. I don't know how Steve puts up with it. Its as if we have to have the obligatory banter thrown in but it just shows how childish Danny can be. I hope they give Chin and Kono something more to do in the episodes where Steve is missing otherwise I won't be watching them.

It may just be my inner shipper, but I definitely felt there was a little moment between Kono and Steve during the birthday scene at the end. When she said, "I will also keep that in mind", he looked at her and they kinda smiled at each other. I'm a huge Kono/Steve shipper, so I really hope this happens! I'm bummed that McGarrett isn't going to be in the NCIS:LA cross-over.

I wanted to add that I thought danny was fantastic in last nights episode. His humor is usually sarcastic but last night it was spot on and made me laugh. I also enjoyed how well he took the lead. It was obvious alex had already "left the building" and they had danny take that role. He did a great job. I am sad alex will not be in the next epi but after last night I felt reassured that this team will be okay for a bit while he is away. I still will miss him terribly but it is what it is.
And I love that we have the family feel back with the team. That is what made me fall in love with this show to begin with!!! Just keeps getting better and better this season. Now we just need alex healthy and it will be perfect.

Fandangtastic!!. They listened to the fans and went back to their winning ways with orig 4. Great show last night and good to see Asner pull off the roll so 'cooly'.
What is the lead in rehab for? What a shame if is for drugs or alcholol. Will they shoot around him or shut down production? Either way will hurt the show. I wish them well. Is one of the better shows on tv now.
This episode was FANTASTIC!! we got the best opening scene EVER!!
Great to see the Steve/Danny partnership is still growing the chemistry these guys have is amazing!
Was good to see Mary was back hope she comes more often Steve needs his family.
Loved the case, and how the used the old footage Ed Asner rocked it! I confess never saw that ending coming.
That last Ohana scene "Happy Birthday Big Kahuna" was adorable and the cake was awesome Steve ruiend their surprise and had to pay for it with a salty cake.
The episode also left me in tears knowing it was Alex last episode for a while it seems Alex's unavailability have started, unofficially, somewhere during filming of this episode, he wasn't as much in the episode as he usually is. I had a feeling they rewrote and shoot new scene's we got part of scene's were Danny took over as leader of Five-O. Alex health problems most be the reason they could shoot the whole episode with him. Sadly because it was suppose to be a Stev
@Jim.. You're welcome! and thanks for always answer us back don't see that often with other review writers I do not always agree with you but I always look forward to your review so we can discuss about it here.

This show is getting better and better. I really enjoyed last night's episode. I can't complain. I just finished my detailed review.
I thought this was a great episode, however after a couple weeks of repeats we get one new episode and then now there will be a few more weeks of repeats. I assume they are wanting to not film any more episodes until Alex is back so I am guessing we will not see the last 5 episodes in April/May as that was the last one that Alex filmed before rehab.
What a great way to start the show though, a wet, shirtless Alex! Scott was fine to look at as well! One thing to note, Alex has a huge lower back tattoo that goes around and stops around the hips on both sides, I do not know how they managed to cover it as if he was in the water there is not makeup that would keep it covered.
Anyways on to the episode, I really enjoyed it! However Taryn Manning can not act, but that is okay. Poor Mary she is getting her life on track then she has to be told that she was just used by Angela. However Steve saved her job at the airline and Mary will be just fine. I was not expecting August to shoot

I loved the scene at the beach. Knowing that in real life Scott Caan is an expert surfer, and Alex is just beginning, having them switch for the show was very funny. Danny making fun of Steve slamming his surf board in the sand, and then dragging it on the beach as he is leaving, very funny.
Loved seeing Mary back, she does seem to get into trouble a lot, but that's what big brothers are for. I did like that they did not drag out that she was innocent and proved it pretty quickly. I am hoping that since sister Mary is going to be coming to island as a flight attendent, then we will see her more often in season 3. I would to see more of that relationship with Steve. Overall, very entertaining episode.

@Jim....you forgot to mention that there was no chasing of a suspect. He did step back and aim his gun at March, but Fryer just shot him, no chase.
I loved the ending, about half way through we knew that Asner's character was still going to be bad, but to shoot the girl that was a surprise and well done. I also love right before he shoots her, they started out with March in 1975 saying the line and then March in 2012 finishing the line, "never turn your back on the buyer". Very well done.
I enjoyed the episode. Of course, seeing both Steve and Danny shirtless made it all worthwhile! As always, Mary appears and havoc reigns supreme and big brother Steve to the rescue. I really enjoyed the flashbacks, they worked so well with the present - great job writers and producers! Ed Asner was excellent - not over the top and I was really surprised at the ending. He truly was a bad guy, I never saw that ending coming! I liked how Mary made "fun" of Steve and Danny's surfing buddy relationship and Steve's reaction to his salty (ugh) birthday cake.
With Alex missing for a few episodes, Scott, Daniel and Grace (esp. Daniel and Grace) will be manning the ship and I'm looking forward to seeing each of them shine. We know what Scott's capable of, now it's Daniel and Grace's turn. Hurry and get well Alex, we need you and miss you.
