Castle Round Table: "After the Storm"

at . Comments

What happened "After the Storm?" We all found out on the Castle Season 5 premiere.

In this return edition of the TV Fanatic Round Table, staff writers Christine Orlando and Jim Garner have partnered with our friends at the Castle fan forum The 12th, as readers Teresa and Bobbie join in this week to decide whether Rick and Kate's new relationship should be kept a secret and how long before our favorite bromance gets back together...

What was your favorite scene from the premiere?
Teresa: My favorite scene was them falling out of the bed. When Rick heard Martha's voice. I loved the popup of them both with Kate holding the pillow which in a few minutes later threw at Rick's head while she was hiding in the closet!! Too Funny!!

Bobbie: My favorite scene was when Kate was overwhelmed by the realization that she would never be safe and she stepped right into Castle's arms for support. That move spoke to me of the total commitment she had made to him and how willing he was to protect her. It was beautiful!

Jim: I loved Kate smacking the senator in the face with the gun and telling him that when he looks at the scar it will leave to remember her. Talk about one gutsy woman - WOW.

Carla:  I agree with Jim. Kate was awesome in that scene with the Senator. Another favorite was the combination of Castle having Beckett hide from his family, her getting upset, and then her wanting Castle to hide from Ryan. That was classic Castle/Beckett humor and banter. Loved it.

Christine: There were so many! I'll go with the opening scene. Rick's hesitation as he makes sure she's really in this with him and Kate's shy smile were just perfect. My only complaint is that it just made me want more!

Should Rick and Kate keep their relationship a secret?
Teresa: No, I personally think their family and friends will be relieved that they finally got there heads together. But outside of them, No they should not know since it will affect how well Rick and Kate can work together. Personal relationships are frowned upon.

Bobbie: I like the idea of them keeping their relationship a secret for a bit. It enhances the preciousness of it all and also gives them time to explore each other - in so many ways :)

Jim: It will be fun for an episode or two, but after that it's going to become like watching some teen high school show. Maybe they can rename it Castle 90210 if that happens.

Carla:  For now, yes. They should enjoy what they finally have together and figure out what it all means before letting others in. Plus, it will be fun to watch them keep it a secret. I expect it will be out within the first week though. Neither of them can keep a secret.

Christine: I agree with Bobbie. It makes it more intimate and opens up so many opportunities for comedic moments and misunderstandings. For a short while, this could be a lot of fun.

Take a guess: Who will be the first to figure out they are together?
Teresa: The person who might learn their secret first is Martha or Esposito. The reason is Martha pops up in the most unusual times therefore she might catch them. Esposito is a good detective and he heard them talking in the building. He will notice small differences. So it depends on luck with Martha or skill with Esposito. I betting on skill over luck!

Bobbie: I have to go with Martha being the first to figure out they're together. She's always been very in tune to Castle's emotions and she understands his devotion to Kate.

Jim: Lanie. She and Kate are too close of friends for her not to figure it out pretty damn quick when Kate doesn't give details on the latest guy. Then again, Espo may already suspect.

Carla:  Good question. They are friends with detectives and Castle has a very intuitive family. It could be anyone or actually it probably will be everyone!

Christine: I'm rooting for a Martha. I just love the relationship between her and Castle. She's the one person he confides in and I can't to have him talk about Kate with his mom.

How long will it take for Esposito to forgive Ryan?
Teresa: Esposito will work with Ryan only grudgingly. The bromance is gone for the moment. I suspect for a fairly long time too. At least one-quarter of the season

Bobbie:  Because I read every spoiler possible, I know that Ryan and Espo will be on the outs for a few episodes. I'm guessing episode 4 should see them back to being loyal partners. I'm glad that show creator Andrew Marlowe is taking his time on this because it validates what happened in the finale so well. That was a serious falling out and it shouldn't be overcome without some time and effort.

Jim: The bromance will be back on track once Espo is off suspension and they get into the thick of it again.

Carla:  A couple puppy dog looks from Ryan, that's all it will take.

Christine: Obviously it's going to take a while. I mean, Esposito just threatened to break Ryan's arm and I think he meant it. There are some serious trust issues that need to be rebuilt before we get our dynamic duo back.

Were you happy with the way they tied up Kate's mother's murder storyline?
Teresa: Yes, I was very satisfied. The Dragon is identified and neutralized and Kate did not go to jail for shooting him.

Bobbie: I was very pleased with the level of closure on Johana's murder case. It removes the target from Kate's back and allows her to flourish in her new relationship but it also left it open for further development if the writer's choose to pursue it. I loved an empowered Kate in that confrontation scene! Stana knocked it out of the park!

Jim: I don't think it fully wrapped up, I suspect we could see the Senator again, after all Kate didn't bring him to justice - this time. But overall I am happy that we now have all the answers to why her mom was killed and it got Kate and Rick together, so that's a big win - right?

Carla:  Yes. In the big picture, it makes sense what happened, why people were killed, but I don't think it is quite over yet. The Senator won't back down forever.

Christine: Yes. It's a stalemate for now but Kate has some answers and will bide her time until she can get her own justice. Now she and Castle can have some fun…until the Dragon wakes up again.

CASTLE WRITERS - THIS ONE IS FOR YOU :) After patiently waiting 4 VERY, VERY, VERY LOOOONG YEARS for that first, unforgettable ALWAYS kiss your are going to give us a CRASH COURSE on Weather Girls???? Come now, let us bask in the glow of HAPPY for the next four years. Nothing to do with fair, life is not fair...but you can write whatever you want :) There are sooo many layers to CASTLE - serious drama, comedy, romance, mystery, murder, "the macabre"... I was so looking forward to outrageous situations like the first episode of Season 5. This one felt "forced", fragmented somehow. You have earned the viewers admiration, patience & respect...BRING IT ON !!!! Mr. & Mrs. Marlowe - cuff yourselves together again & get the juices flowing. Yes you can, of course you can...& I know you will :)

I think the person to figure them out first could be someone not so obvious. Gates or Ryan.

My favorite scene is just a little bit different: it's when Kate is leaving Rick asleep in her bed to go confront the senator alone. The way she stopped and looked back at him sleeping was so incredibly tender, it spoke more than a thousand words. As for keeping their relationship a secret, I actually like the idea. For now. It forms the perfect setup for a million jokes while also giving their secret looks and gestures just so much more appealing to all of us! Who finds out first? If I were the writer, I'd make it Alexis. The bond Castle feels for his daughter is just amazing. (EVERY girl wishes she had that with her own dad!) And it would be such a joy to Alexis to know that her dad is - finally - in a stable and long term loving relationship (kind of freeing her up in her own life, too). As for the arc about Kate's mother's murder, I don't think that it's been a coincidence that Kate has grown and healed a bit with each step toward finding the truth. Just as Castle, himself, has matured in his caring and concern for Kate. It has been such a pivot point for them that I can actually foresee the writers using it to create more tension in their relationship down the road. I think the senator may just get his final come-upance just before Kate walks up the aisle to marry Castle.

Fav scene: Basically all the scenes with just her and Rick, and her showdown with the Senator. Liked her scene with Gates too. Glad they are using the Penny Johnson Jerald more, adding nuance. Secret: for a few episodes it will be fun, but then family & friends should know. It might be fun for a few episodes after that, if then everyone knows but Gates, because then everyone could be in on keeping it from her - more comedy. The final twist - Gates KNEW, and chose to ignore it! LOL! First to find out: Lanie. That's obvious. Best friends always know! As has been said, glad they didn't just sweep the Ryan & Esposito rift under the rug. Love how this show really follows through on its storylines, no plotlines for convenience that just get dropped like they never happened. I think there may be a bit of a tussle where they finally say what needs to be said, can't see Espo sitting down to talk things out. Love how the dealt with the Beckett's mom murder. Clarity and some closure - but not completely over. They have alot of storylines to play with and I enjoy the way they all weave in and out and support character growth. Nevermind the layers to the Beckett onion, there are many layers to ABC's Castle!

They will try to keep it a secret for awhile. I would hope they would not focus on keeping it a secret and just try to play it cool. I don't like the relationship being the foreground of the show. I would rather it be in the background sub to the crime storylines. I think several people will be in the know, but not tell. Then when they are ready to tell everyone, everyone will already know. Beckett's mother's murder is tied up but it's ripe for coming back at any time. The senator probably won't let that lie for long. AND he'll have an awesome scar so that we can recognize him. But, if they don't come back to it that's fine, too. They certainly have plenty of storyline to work with. My favorite scene was when she smacked him with the gun and told him it would leave a nasty scar. Maybe she'll go from being just a plain badass to be being just plain bad.

They are friends and deserve to know the truth. I would let all of "the family" in on their relationship as soon as it is reasonable. They deserve to know that they have been anticipating has finally come to fruitition. If they don't it may come up to bite them later.

After the Storm was just pure magic, from the heartbreaking scenes (Espo referring to Ryan as "Judas") to the funny scenes (Kate sneaking out of the loft). But my favorite part was the way Rick said "You were right...I had no idea." For some reason, that just melted me...something about Nathan's delivery and his facial expression. And I thought Stana Katic absolutely owned this episode; her acting/expressions/timing were just fantastic. Well done, Marlowe and Company!!

Ok 1 more thing and then I'll be quite......I think it's time Kate says those 3 words to Rick.

Oh, was also going to comment that they are making a necessary big deal out of Ryan by how Castle had to explain to him (while Esposito stood there with pursed lips) how unwise it would be to call in a warning on Beckett until it was absolutely necessary and to think that what he would be reporting was also unlikely (I got that message, or imagined it, because I can't remember what exactly was said). Because it's a TV show (meaning dramatics and twists and suspense, etc.) there probably will be some exciting incident to put Ryan and Esposito's friendship back together -- but what would even feel satisfying would be for them to talk it out while working on other cases. I mean, I think Esposito, as he's been developed, would be quite content with getting his say and feeling Ryan gets it.

I don't like the captain -- but that hope you're that loyal to me, or whatever exact words, at the end struck me as a way to go with the captain to make her less like the worst villain in the show -- like her criticisms and sarcasms could become meaningful to her detectives and not just nasty and disabling their ability to do their jobs. That would be a welcome development ... and wonder what all she'll have to say when Castle's back when Beckett is.
