The Mentalist Review: Is He Red John?

at .  Updated at . Comments

Did Jane finally found the man who slaughtered his wife and daughter in The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 7?

Is it all just another ruse?

The Great Red Dragon Scene

As the house explodes, we know two things:

  1. Reede, Smith and Gail Bertram are alive.
  2. But are the other three really dead?

Cho seemed convinced. There was enough DNA to positively identify Bret Stiles, Ray Haffner and Tom McAllister in the wreckage but their remains were so charred they couldn't be identified any other way.

I don't know about you but unless I see an actual dead body on my screen I'm not trusting anyone's lab results. That's what The Mentalist has done to me. It's made me completely paranoid.

I couldn't blame Lisbon for letting her guard down around Bertram. When she saw those three dots on Smith's shoulder she assumed he was Red John. She's lucky that assumption didn't get her killed. We know it almost meant the end for Patrick Jane.

I was shocked when Bertram took the scalpel to Jane's throat but what was his plan? He would have had Jane's blood all over him. Perhaps he was going to act as though he stopped the perpetrator. Either way, he never got the chance.

Van Pelt did a great job of tracking down the doctor from Reede's past and Rigsby covered his reaction well when Jane told him over the phone not to trust anyone in law enforcement.

I was surprised that Cordero had no problem trying to kill the CBI agents but perhaps I shouldn't have been. He might have expected Tyger, Tyger to cover have his back.

But really, can anyone expect that anymore? Since Cordero was sent to kill Reede, it appears that Tiger, Tiger is more than willing to kill off its own members to protect the group.

The interrogation of the Officer didn't reveal much that we didn't already know but watching Jane work as a human lie detector is always fun. I had to smile when the man looked at Jane and told him, "Get out of my head."

After a pow wow with Lisbon, Jane realized that when Partridge told Lisbon "Tyger, Tyger" as he lay dying he was actually hoping she was a member, He was asking for help. That led to Cho heading out to find the man's body.

Lisbon: I'll have Cho track down the body but Partridge could be buried by now.
Jane: Well, have Cho bring a shovel.

Jane was so close to finding his answers that nothing was going to stop him, certainly not a little dirt. Thankfully it didn't come to that and Cho was able to find his body with the skin ripped off the man's shoulder. Definitely Tyger, Tyger at work.

That Cho let Detective Cordero get away was a bit surprising but I suppose the goal was to get Reede Smith back safely.

Reede's interview was illuminating. Off course he wanted immunity but Patrick quickly explained why that wasn't going to happen in this The Mentalist quote

Get up off your ass and walk but hey, good luck getting out of the building before your friends catch up with you.

Reede Smith's story was innocuous enough. A back injury led to a pain medication addiction. But things spiraled out of control when it caused him to accidentally shoot and kill a 12-year-old girl. It should have meant the end of his career and prison time. Instead it led to The Blake Association. Tyger, Tyger burning bright. Someone must really like that poem.

There are certainly similarities to a tiger and Red John. They are both vicious in their kills yet stealthy enough that you probably won't see it coming until it's far too late.

The Blake Association could be 100s. It could be 1000s. We don't know for certain but we do know it includes Gail Bertram.

I was shocked that Jane told the media that Gail Bertram was Red John. Does he truly believe that he is or was it just a way to flush him out?

Bertram obviously has no qualms about getting blood on his hands and quite a lot of it considering what he did to that poor bartender.

The fake out at his aunt's house was kind of brilliant. There was so much chaos that he simply slipped out as another member of SWAT. I was half waiting for Jane to ask every one of them to remove their shirts on the spot.

And just as the CBI team was getting close, in strutted FBI Supervisory Agent Dennis Abbott from Austin, Texas. Unfortunately, I couldn't really blame the powers that be for sending him. The corruption within the CBI has made the organization completely untrustworthy.

But they took Jane's couch. They broke his favorite teacup! No good will come of this.

What does this mean for our CBI team? No one, including Lisbon believes that Jane's about to walk away.

Do you believe that Stiles, Haffner and McAllister are truly dead or could one of them still be pulling the strings? Is Gail Bertram actually Red John? I'd say he's got the arrogance and the capacity for horrific violence that could make it so. At this point nothing on The Mentalist would surprise me.

What about you?

It was alright except for the end. Xander Berkeley did a good red john but what was bad for me was the ending death scene. Instead of Jane looking like he was going to jizz on McAllister's face and breathing like he's having an orgasm they should have had McAllister's life flash before his eyes and show how he became what he did and how. Other than that it was good. By the way did you all see janes wife and daughter walking hand in hand while Jane ran past. Very nice. Made my night.

This episode will be emotional no matter who RJ is. Thanks to Simon Baker, it is an experience we will remember and will be re watched many times. Here's to the new life a'coming. So long RJ, been nice to know ya......well not really.....but you have been a good reason for Patrick's revenge. I hope they don't make you needy and able to elicit sympathy. I want you to be evil, horrible, unrelenting so I can stomp on your grave and yell......Good riddance!! Looking forward to Monday for your take on all that transpires. Enjoy tonight.

Have fun watching the show!

Goodbye to an era and hello to the new one! p.s. they just played promo and for the life of me I can't figure out that voice. :/

@ Entwife

Good by RJ! :-)
Hmmm, having avatar troubles again..... oh well, seems to work now!

@ bonaduz

I see your lion and I raise my glass to him!

I wish all of you a happy death of Red John day! Even if whoever we picked individually for RJ turns out to be wrong, at least the SOB will be dead, most sincerely dead. See you all after Christine's review.

Hi Guys, I know I don't come on very often now but I just wanted to say that I hope you all make yourselves comfortable, grab some snacks and just enjoy the heck out of the episode this evening!! Here's to LARJ - life after Red John, LOL!! xx

@ Kate

Thanks Kate! I wanted to wish the same to you all! By tomorrow (actually by tonight for you) we'll finally be dancing on RJ's grave HAHAHA! ;-) (lol I like it LARJ, a new historical era...).

I listened to the promo and watched episodes of those who are most likely to be a match. Most of the list can be eliminated. (All but one IMHO.) I'm pretty sure I've ID'd the matching voice but I'm not saying because it would tend to spoil our viewing of the show tomorrow. Actually we can't be sure it's RJ's voice. Could be someone else reacting to a different part of the story line. Promos are so unreliable. Can't wait to be rid of RJ and see Jane move on to face different situations and reveal more of his character.

@ rationalgal2

Moving on after RJ is what I'm waiting for, too. Very excited!

Chin up Anitraward1, it will be ok. Between this site and Reviewbrain's blog,I have learned so much insight about this series. I am a latecomer, having watched season 1-4 while recuperating from a car accident. Watching them nonstop was exciting, but I had no one to discuss episodes with. Then, September 2012, was when I found so much information through discussions. Analyzing them is what is awesome to me, from symbolism to foreshadowing to theorizing all makes it such a fulfilling experience. When the dust settles it will be good!

@ washgurl36

We went down the rabbit hole together and came out the other side, it has been one hell of a ride!

@ anitraward1

It certainly has and now we're about to emerge into a whole new world. And Simon directs the episode that sets it up. Woohoo! Cant' wait for tonight and next week, too!

@ washgurl36

I watched 3 seasons nonstop after realizing the name of the show I sometimes watched some parts was TM!
I couldn't discuss it with anyone until recently. I just read TM Wikia and Wikipedia and ... It's amazing. I remember wanting T.C. being Red John, because I wanted Jane(and me) to move on. no one agrees with me, though! even now some say it should be kept a mystery!

@ rihanna

I agree with you! Ready to move on :D

I was listening to the Red john voice too and that slow deliberate speech sounds like Le Roache with his speech slightly altered. He did cut the tongue of of the mouth of the man who raped his mother. Maybe he belongs to the tiger organization and speaks on Red John's behalf. If you raise the pitch of Le Roache's voice, it would sound like RJ.

I will watch the episode tomorrow. I don't care who said what . I don't care if it's their trick to have more viewers or it was their fault resulting less viewers. I don't care if it disappointed some people. It might disappoint me, might not! I don't care who RJ is. if he comes back from fake death or stayed alive. I just like the show... I didn't like everything they did till now, but overall I liked it and will like it. and I don't care if they win any awards...
TM is one of my favorite shows. I sounded like a loser, a nerd or a superficial gal couple of times after saying how much I liked the show. I even looked for a course to take to become a Mentalist... didn't find any, yet...
So, if they pass by RJ fast and don't mention some stuff I want answer for, I will get upset, but still like the show. If they make someone I didn't think would be RJ, I will be upset, but still like the show, if Jisbon happens, I would think it was lame but still like the show and so forth! I think you all get the idea. and I hope there are thousands of people like me... :) Now tell me whose voice you think it is saying "game is over, I won" in Promo. It's getting into my nerves!

@ rihanna

I have listened to that voice over and over. It seems to be a younger voice. Maybe 35-40. They probably altered it so we wouldn't figure it out. As I said earlier, it really sounded like T. Carter, but that would be
Pretty hard to orchestrate. Neigh on to impossible, I reckon. Don't want to wish my life away, but I can hardly wait. I read an interview with Simon Baker where he says he does not even want the name RedJohn uttered in the chapter he directs. I think everyone including the cast is ready for that and want to go forward with the new story. I also think that they are pretty talented people and I feel they have a good chance to make a go of it. He speaks of the dynamics of his character without his nemesis, having carried the evil cloud for almost six years and now that he has put it down, wondering just what happens now. I'm just paraphrasing here. Think I read it on a TV Guide and it is current. Well worth the time spent to read it.

@ washgurl36

I watched the episode with T.C in it... and, you are right. close... I know when RJ captured Lisbon or Jane, he used some kind of device or method to change his voice... but this time I thought it was his real voice...
Well, I think we just have to wait and watch :) I don't know if they are able to continue the show as fantastic as they have been making it until now. 6 years is a long time. they could have wrap it up sooner and it would have been easier to stay good... but we'll see... as long as there's a crime to be solved beautifully by Jane, I think things will be fine.

The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 7 Quotes

Do not trust anyone in law enforcement. Anyone at all.

Cho: They found the remains of three people. Positive remains of Bret Stiles, Ray Haffner, and Thomas McAllister.
Lisbon: Are you sure? I would have think Bret Stiles would survive a nuclear attack.
