Reign Review: That's So Pagan

at .  Updated at . Comments

Pagan rituals, mysterious cousins and beautiful tiaras? It's true - the Reign I love so much is back!

Reign Season 1 Episode 10 was our first real peek into the Bash administration, and let me tell you: it is awesome.

We've had a bit of a hard time getting to know Bash through Reign Season 1, mostly because Francis was always getting in the way - making out with Mary, or pledging his love to Mary, or pretending like he's mad at Mary when we know he's not really and he's totally going to come back any second and pledge his love to her again.

But this hour gave us one of our first sustained looks at who Bash really is. And it turns out: he is a spunky, sarcastic, spiritually open-minded man with little tolerance for royal decorum and the striking blue eyes of a well-bred Husky. Sign me up, man!

I know you can't force love (or its cousin, sweaty teen lust), but I hope Mary gives it a shot; Bash seems like he'd be much more tolerable to spend a lifetime around than Francis.

The birthing scene did take the whole "Mary the Saint" thing a little far. Even Bash's cousin seemed to think it was a bit much. But I thought it made great use of the "birth in an unusual place" sitcom trope, and also provided a great opportunity to make a plea for religious tolerance of pagans.

I know I can be a little hard on this show's historical revisionism, but I loved that moment. What a spine Bash has!

Queen Catherine, now locked up in a tower, is increasingly becoming an actual fairy tale witch, and her attempts on Bash (and everyone else)'s life are taking on a bit of a Wile E. Coyote sheen.

Nothing to worry about, though - if anything, this all has made her more entertaining, her Reign quotes tarter and her scenery chewing all the more delightful.

I particularly loved seeing her up against Kenna again - they're the two campiest, sassiest characters on this show, and honestly, I think we should just let them slug it out in the castle's moat. Or maybe they're holding on to that one for Sweeps Week?

It seems we'll have to wait until next week to find out what happened to Nostradamus. Is he just, like, lying there? ROTTING? How thoroughly ghoulish. Then again, that would be just another day at French court, where someone is always murdering someone with a poisoned ring, or telling a terrible secret through a false wall panel, or letting a corpse just molder. Man, do I love this show.

Official Reign FashionWatch: 9/10! Everyone looked great this episode, but I was especially fond of Mary's velvet cloak and Lola's dress when the Ladies go visit Queen Catherine - it looked like something Tilda Swinton would wear to the Golden Globes to show that she is sexy but still tasteful.

But when you're done trying to figure out what size velvet robe you wear, answer the real question:

What's next for Queen Catherine?

Bash all the way! I find Francis a little too whiny and indecisive: France, no Mary, Yes Mary! What? no France..... It's all too annoying, and even though they had sex, I find their relationship too PG. Whereas Bash is 100% Mary. He hates politics, has his own moral agenda, is badass and sort of wild, and he's just all around passionate and intense. He may not be perfect for Mary, but that just makes their relationship even more realistic. I loved Catherine in this episode; she's just so evil and demented in her quest for self preservation (ITS AWESOME!). I predict she wont die just because she makes such a wonderful opposition and antagonist at court. Who could they possibly find that's better to torment Mary? The king was amazing too in this episode; the way he claimed you had to "cut down any obstacle"... positively ruthless. By far though my favorite scene was when Bash pulled Mary out of the bathtub. Yes it was his first time seeing her naked (and all he cared about was making sure she was safe), and the way he held her... it was very touching the level of devotion. Plus, he looked like he wanted to flay Catherine alive which was a major bonus. The sheer aggression in his eyes... Bravo.

I was so looking forward to this show returning but since it came back its just been disappointing and boring. It is ridiculous how Mary is all into Bash all of a sudden when just a few days ago she was so in love w/Francis. Now Mary has all but forgotten about him. Also it is crazy that Francis would just leave the castle and now Bash is all high and mighty. I'm just hoping that maybe Francis went to Scotland to find Mary's mom and bring her to France and make Mary marry Francis because they belong together. I don't think Francis will just give up the girl he loves and is meant to be with to his brother. I also don't think marry will end up marrying Bash its too dumb. Mary & Bash are cool but Mary and Francis will always rule!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Loved this episode and am a team Bash convert...I felt like we really got to know him and I really like Mary and Bash Together, it's more of a natural fit.

The episode was great.
4.3/5 felt Francis not being there a little to much. Really creepy and scary pagan scene. But I had trouble understanding why Lola even have queen Catherine a choose on redemption when she's just to dangerous to let live...

@ TPHxitachi

I belive Francis not there because Richard sent him away for few days to help him process Mary's power wedding, and he was truely hurt. Aslo I believe Francis an Mary 5old each other of their love for each other over country ,the first nite they slept together.

I thought this was a great episode. I like Mary and Bash together but I also like Mary and Francis together. Like Bash said he wouldn't Mary her for the country or he wouldn't make decisions for the country he'll make decisions for her and that's why I think they are good together because their relationship seems more real where as Francis and Mary do love each other and wanted I Mary each other Francis would put the county before her which is good for a king but not in love. Seeing Catherine locked up but having a bunch of luxuries before Mary took them all away was funny. Looks like we know who's in charge when Mary isn't around Lola was awesome in this episode I loved the way she talked to Catherine and she put Kenna on watch because she knew it would get Catherine talking. Mary loves Francis but she also has feelings for Bash and we know he has feelings for her to and that's why they kissed and when they did I thought it was so romantic and sweet. Can't wait till the next episode.

Didn't like seeing Mary hooking up with Bash. It's only been few days that she told Francis everything she is doing was for him,her true love.Out of sight out of mind I guess. What I loved about Mary was her true sense of loyalty, but that is gone. The Bash wedding was just for a power move I thought. I like Bash, just not with Mary. I see her as weak and a bit of a hypocrite Hard to watch now. .

I prefer her with Francis, just not into Bash.

fantastic episode im particularly loving mary with bash

@ sam

Same. They have great chemistry and he is so much more calm and down to earth than francis i think.

@ sophia

yeah...bash is pretty much perfect for Mary...this issue historically she married its hard for me to invest in him knowing the outcome.

If I die of boredom while hearing my people's grievances, am I playing into the queen's hands?

Thanks to my father's lust for England and your need to marry a French king, I have a target on my back.
