The Mentalist Round Table: "The Golden Hammer"

by at .  Updated at . Comments

Who would have guessed that Teresa Lisbon's innocent date with an old colleague would lead to a whole, new, deadly conspiracy on The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 12?

Below, our TV Fanatics Christine Orlando and Robin Harry are joined by The Mentalist fan @Nerwen_Aldarion from Twitter to discuss who the new super villain might be and whether or not Lisbon's date made Jane jealous.

Don't forget, if you need to catch up or simply want to see it again,  you can always watch The Mentalist online right here at TV Fanatic.

------------------------------------------------------

Who do you think is targeting the former CBI team?

Robin: I'm hoping it's a new big bad. But it's probably the remnants of the Blake Association, covering their tracks by killing the investigating officers, or exacting revenge for the demise of their leader. Who I hope is still dead.

@Nerwen_Aldarion:  Blake Association and/or someone with ties to Red John. This is a hit list for revenge and it makes sense to go after the ones that took down the whole association. I wanted a new bad guy, I got it! Man am I happy.

Christine:  I agree that it is most likely connected to the Blake Association what if it's something else entirely. Maybe Volker exactly his revenge for being sent to prison. I hope it's Blake Association but we'll have to wait and see.

The Mentalist Round Table

Do you agree with Cho? Is Jane just as crazy as he was in the beginning of the series?

Robin: Just discussed this with my brother, who's a big The Mentalist fan. I don't think he's as crazy (close though), but he's certainly testing the FBI waters. However, my brother thinks he's worse now, flying high on overconfidence and taking pleasure in needling Fischer.

@Nerwen_Aldarion:  Yes and No. I agree that he seems less tethered to the earth now that he no longer has revenge but I'm not sure if it is "crazy" or rather the realization that revenge doesn't fill the void of losing his family. He needs something else to live for (Might I suggest Lisbon?)

Christine: I think for Jane this is a whole new world. For the first time in about a decade he's not immersed in the dark side. I don't think he quite knows how to handle that. And Robin, I think your brother has a point. Jane's win over the FBI has made him overconfident and we all know how much trouble Jane's arrogant streak has gotten him into in the past.

Jane is still sporting his scruffy look. What do you think of it?

Robin: Love it. Although, Simon Baker could wear a dirty stained potato sack and I'd still be fawning over him...

@Nerwen_Aldarion: I'm on the fence. On one hand he's damn sexy with the scruff, on the other hand I have this inordinate urge to grab a razor LOL

Christine: So far I'm enjoying the scruffy look. It goes with the new, laid back demeanor and funky shirts. But if he ever man's up and asks Lisbon on a date, I want the razor to come out.

Agent Abbott was back. Do you like the man in charge?

Robin: I like him. He certainly brings a different dynamic to the table. He's all business and he's not yet used to Jane, but respects Jane more than you'd expect a relative newcomer to.

@Nerwen_Aldarion: I liked Abbott for the two seconds he was in the episode. They are going to have to flesh out his character quite a bit more to win us over. I'm surprised how much I like the idea that Lisbon isn't in charge anymore.

Christine: I like him for two reasons:  First, like that it takes the responsibility of the team off of Lisbon and gives her a little more freedom. Second, I like the actor Rockmund Dunbar. As for the character, so far so good but as me again at the end of the season.

Was Jane jealous to hear Lisbon had a date with Osvaldo, or just curious?

Robin: I think there was more curiosity and surprise than jealousy, honestly. Especially after he found out who and what the "date" was about. If he really was jealous, I think he would have crashed the date!

@Nerwen_Aldarion: YES!!!! Curiosity is when you say "Hmm, where are you going?" Jealousy is when you simply cannot believe this is happening and then keep trying to change the subject BACK to get more information. Jane acted like the teenage boy who just found out the best friend he has a crush on was going out with the high school quarterback. It was GREAT!

Christine: There was definitely some jealousy there. It was as though he couldn't quite believe his ears. Plus he made fun of Osvaldo's shoes. Even though he didn't crash the date, he wanted to hear all about it the next day to keep tabs on how serious this supposed date really was.

What was your favorite scene from this Mentalist Season 6 episode?

Robin: The scene with Patrick, Lisbon and THAT HAT was super cute...but my favorite scene was the final one, with Rigsby going into the dark basement without a gun while Grace saw their faces pop up on the screen. I was stressed and riveted; I thought for sure Rigsby was in trouble.

@Nerwin_Aldarion: I have three. Jane being jealous in the car, Jane and Lisbon on the bench (I loved her in the hat and glasses, it was cute) and the final scene with the reveal. It's going to be a long hiatus.

Christine: It was a great episode but my favorite moment was Jane and Lisbon positively flirting on the bench. They were just so cute about it and it's always entertaining to have them bantering back and forth. His comment about the hat made me laugh.

@euterpe, that funny but it could be true!

I know no one wants to hear it but I didn't buy that Red John ending. I'm with Rationalgal, something is way, way off. McAllister is a round peg in a square hole. He seemed more like a sacrifice. It was much like how Lorelei entered Jane's life. Red John sends McAllister to stop Jane from looking for him. Certain things never added up, they just never did. The detective knowing about the tattoos. How would she have ever known that. The stuff that went down at Jane's house. McAllister was dead, why reappear. I don't believe that's over either. If McAllister was dead, no one knew him, Jane thought he was dead and would not have gone after him, why show up at all. Why? Carter said his was Red John, Bertram said he was Red John on the phone and then McAllister says he's Red John. The man that was killed was McAllister no one ever proved he was Red John. No one! McAllister was taken at his word like Carter. It was confirmed that Carter was not Red John. No one confirmed McAllister as Red John. Even Jane himself said McAllister was a disappointment. This coming from the same man (Jane) who said for ten years that Red John was way ahead of him. So what changed? What should have changed? Nothing. The whole scenario in the chapel was to unbelievable. Red John never needed to show up to kill Jane. Everything Red John ever did, he did from the shadows, he never exposed himself. What occurred in the episodes before and the Red John episode was the exact opposite of Red John's behavior. Basically Red John showed up like a lamb for the slaughter, like a gift. All the Red John minions that came into contact with Jane knew the small details of his wife's murder. This includes the Winfrow character that was in jail. Everybody knew Jane's business. Whoever Red John is, it wasn't McAllister. I don't believe Red John was ever apart of the Blake association. Nothing about McAllister screamed serial killer. Just stupid dirt bag. I think Red John allowed Jane to kill his persona. He is still a serial killer, who now has to change his M.O. I believe we will not know who Red John really is until the very end of the series and he will be identified by his legal name. Somebody is going to be resurrected. Red John could turn out to be Lorelei.

Ani you are right and it's even worse. The incompatibilities are almost beyond counting. Why didn't Jane ever say what went on in that house when someone yelled NO! WAIT! just before the first explosion? McCallister could not possibly be Red John. I will never believe he was even if the writers drop this aspect of TM entirely. IMHO the woman in the chapel is RJ. Dressed in black, skulking in and out of our lives like the Death that Heller said RJ represented. RJ doesn't have to be ID'd as any particular person. Better for the story and Heller's use of symbolism for Death if RJ remains just a disembodied voice. But one who never bothers Jane again because he played the game, it was entertaining, has become boring and it's time to move on - for RJ as well as Jane.

There is so much disconnection that it almost seems like a trick. Red John was a showman, McAllister was not. Everything says there is something hidden, something is wrong, something is going on behind the picture. It actually lines up with the color spectrum theory of mine. Oh and they are really using it, 6x16 is violet. Anyway, there are lights we can not see in the spectrum, they are out of the range in how we see light. So I'm thinking that the writers, since they like be so ambiguous will make clear the hidden aspect of the series. The colors do have a meaning in the spectrum.

@ anitraward1

In the RJ phase, every ep title included some shade of red, so the focus was on Red John. Now the plot is going who knows where? No particular focus, so no particular color. But I LOVE Euterpe's suggestion for Infrared John! Priceless!! That should be the title for the ep that explains the RJ mess so it makes sense. IF they ever do that! IF it's possible, given how badly the writers screwed it up. It IS possible to fix the RJ mess and if the writers would check this chat site they would get plenty of good ideas for that.

You mean he is actually InfraRed John?

Anitraward1
@ anitraward1

Stiles said this was bigger then Jane and Red John. This indicates that there is something more. Since Stiles didn't indicate what that bigger was, it is still hidden. if Stiles knew about it, he was probably involved in it. Which means visualize is not out of the picture. Kim said their FBI Unit is a specialized unit. She never said what that was. So what do they specialize in? So for me, like Rationalgal, I don't care what's being said about any of this. I have to go with my gut. Something is not right. Everything is backwards, it just feels like a set up.

Anitraward1

I don't like Abbott or Kim. They're sneaky, dishonest and up to something in my book.

Rationalgal2
@ anitraward1

Ani I think you are right that there is something bigger going on. The series has always made that clear, but it was all abandoned suddenly. Every single thing from the Pilot ep onward that related to RJ was dropped like it never existed. I would love all this to be a setup for the final "Infrared John" reveal but I fear it's all going to be dropped. we are getting nothing to suggest otherwise - it's all 'this is NEW!" Like they are prepping for a new TM series based on an entirely different premise. I think that "specialized unit" stuff is just the FBI's way of covering up for Jane's unorthodox crime solving ways. It would be nice if it were otherwise and a Red John cleanup was in the works. But it's a dim hope.

Anitraward1

I think Jane was jealous. I had a couple of favorite scenes, Jane and Lisbon in the conference room. Jane and Lisbon on the bench. Cho and Jane outside the office building when Cho tells Jane he's acting crazy. And know I don't think Jane is crazy in the least little bit. Jane has done so much in his life and I think it made him a little eccentric. I mean that in a good way. I love these kind of people they are not mundane. I was ok with Jane's new look but now I'm ready for him to slide through the door in a nice suit, black shoes, fancy hair cut and announce himself. Hi, I'm Patrick, Patrick Jane, FBI! One episode would be fun, wildly hilarious. They should have him dressed like James Bond. I swear Baker could pull that off. They could do an episode where he has temporary amnesia and an accent, Australian! It would be the best episode ever. Then have him come back to himself right in the middle of making out with Lisbon. Wow!

I think he is better without the full suit - the new look makes him look younger and a lot thinner. The vest used to make him look like he had a minor weight problem - but I think it was the clothes rather than him. Hoping he progresses to a nice white shirt and jeans :-)

Anitraward1
@ Just+Passing

I'm not talking about the vested suits. I'm talking about real clothes, dress clothes. The vest made him look that way. He does look more his age now.

@ Just+Passing

I rather like the messy Jane but an episode where he's really dressed up would be OK. He wore a tux in one episode for a con he was working and looked fabulous. But generally messy best fits Jane's unorthodox behavior. What I want to see is an ep where Jane and Lisbon have to put on a performance and do a duet of the JohnnyCash/June CarterCash song, "Jackson." We got at taste of this in Red White and Blue when they did a bit of "Kansas City" and it was SO cute! Might as well wind up the series with a sample of all the neat stuff Simon and Robin can do.

Ahhh...one of the things they probably should not do is sing! How about a little Fred and Ginger?

I did not think jane was jealous, finally something seems to be happening.

I'm finding I do not like most of the new people on the show so far, and not really liking cho' s attitude much either now that he is in FBI, but I do still enjoy jane and lisbon

@ Lynn

I think we are supposed to have strong likes and dislikes for the new/old people - its to stir up audience engagement. It makes it fun having discussions with other people as the story unfolds. Its way too soon to tell who all these people are going to turn out to be and the rush to complete the story before they get cancelled is making it all less believable due to the rush to fit everything in. I wish they would renew to series 7 soon or just cancel - either give everything more time to develop or let them know to wrap up and dump the plots that could stretch into 7 so there is more time for the rest of it.

1. I can see it being someone connected to the Blake Society. There was that one woman at the church who survived as well and that the show purposely showed got away. Either way? That ending and the kick off of danger to the team suddenly made everything way more interesting! I can't wait. 2. I've never thought Jane was crazy. A little reckless but not as much as he was before when he was chasing Red John. Jane's just smart and calculating and he's 10 steps ahead of everybody else. So what seems "crazy" or erratic on his part is just because nobody sees what he sees at the time. Later, in hindsight, it all makes more sense. That's the way smart/genius works. I do think he's overconfident, so I'm expecting something to deflate his ego balloon soon. 3. Simon Baker's looking hot! And for some odd reason... younger. I like. 4. Abbott is okay. He's not on yet enough to be more than the parent who walks in the room to silence the squabbles. 5. I think it was a bit of both to be honest. 6. The conspiracy reveal was my favorite overall show moment. That's when things went from okay to OMG what's going to happen next?!?!?!? Best Jane/Lisbon moment was definitely the hat moment. Too cute!

Rationalgal2
@ Smoak&Arrow

Re that woman at the church. In my personal attempt to find some rational explanation for that awful cobbled up Red John ending, I am making it my personal ending and it is this: The woman at the church was Red John. McCallister was just another RJ surrogate ala Timothy Carter. He had none of the characteristics needed to function as RJ, and the "Blake Assn'" was a misdirection because the real RJ was an ideologue selling a woo-woo ideology where followers worshipped him. The "Blake Assn" was just a handful (not "thousands") of dirty cops connected thru McCallister by having had their criminal activities covered up. It was a small sideline to the main RJ cult operation. RJ is still out there. In my personal ending, I see Jane and Lisbon outside their Airstream. Jane's phone is inside on the table. Lisbon goes in, notices the phone has a message waiting. She turns it on. It is the old familiar RJ voice saying he's thru with killing, is retiring (just as Carter said) and wishes Jane well and says he will never hear from him again. Lisbon listens, looks dismayed, pauses, then erases the message. She never tells Jane about the phone call. Never.

@ rationalgal2

More re that woman at the church: Heller said Red John represented the Death that haunts all our lives, but he portrayed RJ/Death as an actual person. The woman was that person, (that disembodied voice on the phone, always shadowy, dressed in black, coming in unexpectedly, then skulking away, to come again somewhere else to someone else some day.

I hope they don't bring the Blake Ass'n in as suspects. None of them knew each other outside their little cells and the only cell we had was Smith's so the Blake Ass'n started and ended right there with their arrest. There is no way for them to organize or reason to. They were members only because they got their charges dropped. Nothing to get revenge for. The new killer should be someone/some group entirely new to us. The writers made such a mess of the end of Red John, with everything cobbled up at the last minute and nothing based on anything that went before, including the ID of Red John, that they should just drop all of that. If this is the new Mentalist I want to see a new villain untainted by the plot holes of the last one.

Lisbon: Just sometimes now you act like you are.
Jane: We're equals. Partners.
Lisbon: Fine. Just remember that.
