The Big Bang Theory Review: Mommy Issues

at .  Updated at . Comments

Sorry, Raj. A murder mystery party is only as good as the participants are enthusiastic.

And sorry, writers. The murder mystery party was not nearly as funny as all of Sheldon's one-liners. The dinner was a big bust for all!

The Big Bang Theory Season 7 Episode 18 was half a hit and half a miss, though what worked successfully overshadowed everything that didn't.

The Bad: it wasn't even that the dinner party was a downer itself. Instead, I felt like I was in a time machine rehashing the same relationship issues between Penny and Leonard. Haven't we seen this all before? Maybe not the specific issues, but the couple clearly don't know where they are going.

It was a sweet moment though when Stuart said they were a great couple. They do make one awesome person. Now, if only both halves of that person were headed in the same direction. Or, at least if each half knew where the other wanted to go. Maybe someday they will actually talk to one another.

Enough about the bad. The Good: Sheldon. Everything about Sheldon was hilarious. When I heard the premise revolved around Sheldon accidentally seeing his mother having sex, I wasn't sure about it. This episode had some of the best one-liners of the season. Here are a few of them and you can find more in our The Big Bang Theory quotes section.

I saw my mommy with a naked man and she was trying to be a mommy again.

I used to live in those genitals. And if someone wants to move into my old room, I should at least get a vote.

I love my mother. Even if she fornicates like a demonic weasel.

Howard ended up being the best person to be there for Sheldon. He was able to share his personal experience with his own mother to help Sheldon keep from making the same mistake he did. Besides, it was nice to see the two friends get along without Sheldon being mean and snarky to him.

Sheldon was able to reserve those comments for his mother. Overall, the entire interaction was hilarious from the moment his mother opened the door to the sex talk to the final comment about the Lord being mad.. From the table to the couch ... with a blanket underneath him of course.

It will be intriguing to see if this conversation has any impact on Sheldon's relationship with Amy. I doubt it, but if his pious mother can be with a man for his perfect booty, then perhaps Sheldon can move beyond hand holding and a kiss. Yeah, it probably won't happen.

The final moment was funny, yet sad at the same time. Stuart remembered to show up in the future despite his lack of electronic calendar and no one else did. Poor Stuart. His future doesn't look bright.

Should Sheldon follow his mother's example in his relationship with Amy?

To say this was an appalling episode doesn’t quite cut it. It truly was dreadful, a dreary re-enactment of the scavenger hunt episode with everyone getting hacked off with Raj only this time no one sprung a single decent line. If Raj carries on like this, he won’t have any friends left. Even his supposed new pal Stuart was only invited to play a dead man; I can’t see why the comic store owner stuck it, he must be even more desperate for mates than Raj. I don’t want to talk about this story line. It was horrendous. Half way decent acting couldn’t save it and nor could an Affair to Remember rip off. Terrible stuff. The adventures of Sheldon and Howard in Texas were not much better. Their relationship hasn’t got much better. Sheldon’s confrontation with his Mum was a better storyline, but really, smutty jokes about his Mum having sex all over the house and suggestions she’s a religious hypocrite? Guys, is that the best you can do? I think I only laughed once during the whole episode [Stuart says Penny and Leonard are the best couple he knows; cue indignant cries of ‘Hey’ from Amy and Bernie]. One to forget. Terrible, terrible, terrible…

i like the whol sheldon and howard and his mom that part was funny
the dinner party was boing and as always the best part sheldon and amy were away from each other

I didn't enjoy this one. Seeing Mrs.Cooper again was fun but I'm getting tired of Leonerd and Penny's constant fights. Raj;s murder mystery story line could've been lot better but for the lack of enthusiasm from 2 idiots called Leonerd and Penny.

@ Fifty

We're so in a agreement Fifty - But imagine what you felt about Penny and Leonard in this episode, I have felt that tenfold over since the better half of season 6 and onwards.
Penny and Leonard are boring as hell and they're so wrong for each other so that it is painful to see them, I mean it's more compelling to watch paint dry then watching them interact with each other.

@ Jonas

how you feel about leonad and penny is how i feel about the shamy. shamy are very boring to watch and are very much made to be togather

@ stephie1973

Yeah I'm basically with you on Amy and Sheldon also - Although they managed sometimes to make me smile and somewhat laugh, But when it comes to it they're are boring as hell also

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE WRITERS!? Sheldon never get drunk on purpose, only by deceives And finally they remeber Stuart, what i remember that he lived with Raj now, or did he move in a ghost chapter?

Best part was as always Sheldon and this time with his mother, with a dash of Howard of course - Laurie Metcalf as Mary Copper is brilliant all the way. The yawn fest was all that happened in 4A, although it became interesting for a couple of minutes (more about that below) The biggest BS this season came from Stuart and what he said about Penny and Leonard, but the thing is I actually laughed the hardest at that during the episode and my kid sister also - But it wasn't a genuine laugh, it was a "yeah right" kind of laugh.
Leonard is still a sniffing little insecure dimwit when it comes to Penny and he's still filled with mother issues beyond words - And Penny is drinking more and it's seems that she also lost her outside friends due to a insecure and jealous Leonard, Now what they brought up with their future self and that ill fated relationship was spot on - Not that they it was mentioned but it doesn't take a genius to figure out that Leonard would never be able to handle a successful Penny as a actress, there's no way in hell.
But then again Penny would be dead in cirrhosis before that, so why bother.

They need to have Sheldon and Leonard's mom meet.

@ Grimmfan#10

Or all of the mother's should meet! Mrs. Wolowitz could be on the phone!

The words of Stuart for Leonard and Penny have been very beautiful and exact! this episode has been amusing and deep at the same time, besides I believe that the authors want the character of sheldon to evolve.. the kiss and this episode have not been casual, in the next three season his relationship with Amy will grow I am sure of it!

I was a little disappointed that the episode didn't give Metcalf more screen time. However, I'm glad they acknowledged the "disconnect" between Mary's faith and her actions. I just wish we could have seen the man with the perfect booty. :-) The murder mystery thing didn't make much sense to me, but I thought the epilogue--the quasi-Luddite gets stood up--was funny. Lastly, I've noticed that the writers have taken to "regrouping" the characters in several of the previous eps (eg, in this one, Sheldon and Howard were separate from the others). Glad to see they're shaking things up.

I thought this episode was not only hilarious but poignant with so many insights into the characters of Sheldon, Howard, Stuart and Penard. It was wonderful to dig deeper than the one liners that make this show so enjoyable. For once we see Sheldon as the confused little boy that is behind every bit of bravura usually displayed. I can see the writers will not be resting on their laurels for the next 3 years!

Unlike the main review above, I found the murder mystery hilarious, especially when Penny blurted out her secret. I also loved her line "beer's not flat, my rack's not saggy, so the futures looking good". Lot's of excellent one liners all round with Sheldon and his Mothers standing out. Barely a nerdy moment anywhere, apart from the time travel aspect, yet still a very good episode. The only down side for me,as usual, was Raj. C'mon writers, you've just been handed another three years for the show. Get him sorted out. Right now, he's pathetic!

@ mnementh

I agree. Raj is getting pathetic. I'd like him and Lucy to try again, also the way the writers wrote her set women back to the dark ages.

The Big Bang Theory Season 7 Episode 18 Quotes

Well, I told Howie if I wasn't busy I'd spend the night at his mom's. So for God's sake think of something.

He has a very sensitive butt. Well, it's true. I once saw him sit on a bunch of loose change and add it all up.
