Downton Abbey Movie Gets 2019 Release Date

Attention, Downton Abbey Fanatics!

Focus Features has revealed when fans can assemble to watch the movie follow-up. It will be released in North America on Friday, September 20th, 2019.

This is one week after the international debut date, which falls Friday, September 13th.

Little is known about the movie aside from the fact that most of the cast will be back, and that it was written by series creator, Julian Fellowes.

“Since the series ended, fans of Downton have long been waiting for the Crawley family’s next chapter,” Focus chairman Peter Kujawski said in a statement when the movie was announced earlier this year.

“We’re thrilled to join this incredible group of filmmakers, actors, and craftspeople, led by Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame, in bringing back the world of Downton to the big screen next September.”

“When the television series drew to a close it was our dream to bring the millions of global fans a movie and now, after getting many stars aligned, we are shortly to go into production,” Neame said in a statement.

“Julian’s script charms, thrills and entertains and in Brian Percival’s hands we aim to deliver everything that one would hope for as Downton comes to the big screen.”

Downton Abbey wrapped in 2015 after six seasons. It was a hit in both the U.K. and the U.S. so it was inevitable that the series would return in some capacity.

The craze nowadays has found shows returning with reboots or revivals, and to date, most of both have been disappointing.

By bringing the series back as a movie, it's like an event that will allow fans to catch up with the characters in one sitting, and that's considerably more appealing than a weak sequel series.

With the movie entering production this summer, it was clear the release date would be sooner rather than later, but it's great to know when we can enter this fantastic world again.
