Hawaii Five-0 Season 9 Episode 18 Review: Ai no i ka 'ape he mane'o no ko ka nuku (He who eats 'ape is bound to have his mouth itch)

Danny and Rachel getting back together has been hinted at for a good part of the season.

If there was any doubt about their renewing their relationship, that was largely dispelled on Hawaii Five-0 Season 9 Episode 18.

That was thanks to his standoffish mother-in-law, Amanda Savage.

Joan Collins seemed to be having a great time playing Amanda, a larger-than-life romance novelist remarkably similar to her late sister Jackie Collins.

Collins always summoned the ghost of her legendary Dynasty character Alexis Carrington Colby in playing Danny's snooty, bitchy former mother-in-law.

And watching her and Danny joust, with McGarrett caught in the middle, was a hoot.

We got to find out about all their not-so-great history and about how Rachel settled rather than marrying up.

Something seemed off about Amanda's visit from the get-go.

Her regular security man was having visa problems so she contacted the son-in-law she had always put down in the past, instead of contracting with a security firm on the island?

That was a convenient way for them to be thrown together again.

I also can't believe that as beautiful as it is, Honolulu gets included in many national book tours, another sign that something was amiss.

Sure, it could have been as innocent as Amanda wanting to see her daughter and her grandchildren, so she included Honolulu for that reason alone.

It certainly wasn't because she enjoyed mixing with her fans. And who would have guessed that Flippa was one of those fans?

Steve was having way too much fun watching Danny being tortured by Amanda a little too much as he sipped [guzzled?] expensive champagne.

It's like he knew he was there largely as a chaperone.

Still, he was in there pitching for Danny in the end while Amanda deigned to sample Kamekona's exotic cuisine. It's a shame Danny wasn't around to hear that conversation.

I kept waiting for something to happen, such as Amanda being threatened by a crazed fan and Danny saving her. But it wasn't that kind of storyline.

Instead, it was simply Amanda making peace with Danny, after a day of subterfuge.

Amanda had come from nothing and she wanted her daughter to improve her station as well, so she was disappointed when Rachel married a New Jersey cop and she unfairly took that out on Danny.

Now she was apologizing for that, in her own way, and doing that most parental of activities -- asking Danny his intentions when it came to Rachel.

I think he pretty well stated that he wants to put his family back together. And Amanda seemed OK with that.

Now, with only a handful of episodes left this season, does the wedding happen this season or next? With Scott Caan's reduced schedule, I'm betting next season.

For those who tuned in for a little crime solving, the case of the week was properly convoluted.

A bulked-up guy walking in traffic and screaming shouted steroids.

No big surprise at that autopsy, except for the fact that the drugs would have killed him if a truck hadn't already done so.

Yeah, steroids are supposed to enhance, not kill, although it's hardly that cut and dried.

It didn't take an investigative genius to figure out that Brad had gotten the steroids at the gym where he had been rehabbing.

And a minimal amount of undercover work by Junior and Tani led to the name of the drug dealer supplying the lower-level muscleheads who tried to jump Junior.

Although I question that "Hey, how can a fella get some juice around here?" would work as a line of inquiry in real life.

We also learned that Tani has a future as an aerobics instructor should she keep following her impulses into dangerous situations.

That's when things got sufficiently screwy.

The drug dealer Moses was trading healthy guys' blood for steroids which he had the muscleheads sell. A doctor was using that blood in an immortality con.

I say if you believe being injected with younger blood will keep you young, you deserve the lack of results which you will get.

But Moses kept pushing up his price and received tainted 'roids as a result, which killed him.

Again, he got what he deserved and fortunately, there weren't other such vials out on the street.

Tani's boneheaded maneuver of the episode: Racing after the doctor and getting injected with the deadly steroid. It was a good thing that Adam somehow knew to grab a defibrillator and adrenaline to save her.

It's also good she's young enough to survive such McGarrett-level bad decisions.

Steve has to pick his spots now as he ages.

So there was progress on the Danny-Rachel front, while Grover led the rest of Five-0 in eradicating a potential health menace.

How did you enjoy Amanda's visit and should she be brought back for the wedding?

Did the case of the week come together a little too easily?

Is Tani going to get laid up one of these weeks?
