How to Get Away with Murder Season 1 Episode 4 Review: Let's Get to Scooping

Did anyone see those nine words coming?

The ABC promotion you probably saw a million times this last week promised a jaw dropping reveal from Viola Davis that would consist of nine simple words. All week I tried to figure out what they could be and let's just say I didn't come anywhere close.

On How to Get Away with Murder Season 1 Episode 4, we got a little bit closer to finding out what is going on with #1 shadeball Sam and we got perhaps one of the rawest scenes I've seen on television lately.

Before we get into the utter greatness of those final minutes, let's briefly discuss the case of the week.

The wonderful Elizabeth Perkins guest stars as Marren Trudeau, a CEO at a major brokerage firm that has recently been accused of insider trading. She steals every scene she's in as a woman who's worked her way from nothing to create an empire.

Marren proclaims her innocence and Annalise immediately thinks it was someone within her company that set her up.

Wes: How do you know it's one of her employees?
Annalise: I don't. I just know everybody hates their boss.

At first, Marren is convinced that it couldn't be one of her people, as they are like family to her. Annalise brushes this off, because to her the people who work for you are not your family, they're just your workers.

It's an interesting parallel, as Marren is so convinced her "family" wouldn't turn on her. While Annalise seemingly looks down upon her students and they're probably the only people she can truly trust right now.

In the end, Marren is betrayed by those closest to her. And Connor is the one to get the truth by seducing her assistant, Paxton. And after calling him out, everyone watches Paxton fall out of a high rise window. Brutal stuff.

The flash forwards this week showed Connor breaking down completely and I think the death of Paxton will be the start of a downward spiral for him. In past episodes we got a glimpse of Connor's intensity the night of the murder, but tonight took things to a whole new level. He was having a mental breakdown before our very eyes. And it culminated in him going to see his old flame Oliver.

We see that after getting Paxton on tape admitting to setting up Marren, Connor took the information to pseudo boyfriend Oliver. Later, Oliver listens to Paxton reveal that he and Connor hooked up and Oliver is devastated, breaking things off. Poor Oliver. He deserves so much better than Connor!

While Annalise and the team work this case, they're also trying to figure out how to reduce Rebecca's bail which has been set at  a cool one million dollars. Annalise enlists Bonnie to get a copy of Rebecca's confession tape so they can claim she was coerced into the confession.

We still don't know much about Bonnie, besides the fact that she has a great fashion sense and seems to have a crush on Sam. Tonight she just so happens to be creeping outside Annalise's house when she spots Nate going through Sam's car.

Side note, how about that hot guy stand off? Nate was all hunky in his workout gear and Sam was all confused. I didn't catch what he really found in the car, though. Was Sam in Connecticut the night Lila was murdered? Maybe you guys can help me in the comments.

Anyway, Bonnie uses her stalker skills to blackmail the police into handing over Rebecca's confession. It was pretty brilliant and I gained a lot of respect for her. Still think she's crazy shady, though.

Seeing the confession tape, it's pretty obvious that Rebecca was talked into confessing. The judge sees it that way too and the gang is able to get her out.

Wes goes to her and asks about the cell phone she left at his place, Lila's cell phone. We don't get her answer but we do see that Wes brings it to Annalise. By the way, I'm loving these two as a team now. Anyone else?

Okay, we've reached the final minutes now. And Viola Davis is a freaking tour de force. As she slowly peels back her wig, her eyelashes and wipes away her makeup, you can just see Annalise come undone. She doesn't say a word, but you can feel the pain radiating off her. It gave me the chills.

Then Sam walks in and we get those magical words.

Why is your penis on a dead girl's phone?

Annalise [to Sam]

What in the world??? My jaw dropped. Yet, at the same time I was thinking, OF COURSE SAM SENDS NUDE SELFIES.

So, at the very least we know Sam and Lila were more than just student and teacher. And now that Annalise knows that, will that be the motivation for her to eventually kill him?

I swear each week we just get more and more questions and I love it. Do we think Annalise killed Sam? Or was it Rebecca? Why didn't Bonnie tell Annalise how she really got the confession tape? How is Sam going to justify that picture?

Drop me a comment so we can figure this all out together! And remember to watch How to Get Away with Murder online via TV Fanatic anytime so you don't get left behind.
