The Mentalist Season 7 Episode 8 Review: The Whites of His Eyes

The hunt for a hired assassin leaves Jane and Lisbon at odds on The Mentalist Season 7 Episode 8. The looming question now becomes: will they work it out?
When an assassin takes out a witness and the FBI team guarding him, Agent Spackman calls in Abbott's team to not only guard Lilly, the second witness, but find the killer before he finds her.
I had to wonder about Spackman. He specifically called in Abbott and his team. He's worked with them before so why did he sneer at Jane's quirky methods when he's seen them work in the past? Jane quickly determined that the hired gun was a local based on some powdered sugar. Honestly, that entire scene simply made me crave a beignet (which if you've never had the pleasure of one you really should, they're awesome).
The Bittaker family was one of a kind. Kelvin actually laughed out loud when Abbott told him the witness and three other people had been killed. The man was downright delighted at the news.
Jane and Cho were highly entertaining as they checked out the Bittaker offices. Cho echoed exactly what was going through my mind in this The Mentalist quote when Belinda cried about her family falling on hard times financially…
Because these Ferraris and Phantoms don't say hand to mouth to me.

No kidding. Jane was in awe of Belinda. Listening to her speak was like taking a master class in dishonesty. I didn't know which was better. Jane getting under her skin about her son Caleb playing video games or his knowing that she was on anti-depressants.
The video game angle lead to some cute moments between Wiley and Vega. They looked like a couple of kids as they picked up their controllers to do battle.
Also, it was nice to see Jane drinking from his blue tea cup again. For a moment it felt like all was right with the world once again. If only that were the case but there was an assassin to find.
Why weren't Spackman and Lisbon wearing bullet proof vests when they went to find Peg Bailey? The believed she was the communication link to Lyden, a trained killer. It seemed that vests should have been standard protocol.
Between Spackman getting shot and seeing that bullet hole in Lisbon's jacket, Jane was truly rattled but to be honest I think he was off his game before that. Spackman telling Jane to stay at the car really seemed to irritate him. He even called the man a jackass, albeit out of earshot. For most people that would be no big deal but for Patrick Jane, it felt as though he was already on edge.
So perhaps it shouldn't be surprising that Jane took things a step too far with Lisbon. She already knew he was worried. He admitted as much to her when he couldn't sleep. And on a side note, how cute was it that Jane wears proper pajamas? I would expect nothing less from a man who wears suits with vests to work every day.
Jane sending Lisbon on a wild goose chase to make sure she was out of the line of fire was sweet in it's own way but I could understand Lisbon's fury. This is her career. If she can't trust him not to interfere with that then where does that leave them as colleagues and as a couple? However, I liked Jane's response. He knew what he did was wrong. He understood she was angry yet he was honest enough to admit that he'd probably do it again under the same set of circumstances. But he was adamant that the two of them would work it out.
There was no hesitation in that statement because in the end, the one thing he couldn't bear was losing Lisbon. Hopefully Teresa will feel the same way about working it out because as of the end of this episode, she still looked livid.
