Quantico Season 3 Episode 2 Review: Fear and Flesh

This black ops team doesn't seem like anything special to me.
On Quantico Season 3 Episode 2, the new "elite" black ops team took on their first mission, but it's still a little bit unclear as to why they were the team for the job.
We're going to need a bit more explanation as to what exactly it is that this team does. The attack warranted the FBI stepping in, but why did it call for a black ops team instead of ordinary FBI agents?
It's all unclear.
There are no guidelines as to what type of cases this new team takes, and what makes them so unique. The only somewhat clue we're given as to how this group of people differs from all the other agents was when Alex said she trusts them when she doesn't trust the FBI.
I hate to say this, but Ryan was right when he made the crack about how the team should be elite and not work with people who haven't even passed Quantico yet.
They aren't fully prepared to be working alongside Alex Parrish. She gets into a lot of trouble, and not easily solved trouble.
What is it that this team does?

The tuberculous attack didn't seem like it was right up their alley. Obviously, it was something they could handle, but this group of people is specially equipped for taking on conspiracies or corrupt government agencies or something of the sort.
When they all came together and worked under Clay Haas starting on Quantico Season 2 Episode 14, everything was clear. It was clear what the objective was, and it makes sense as to why they were the people for the job.
Quantico needs to work on explaining the differences between Owen's little team and everyone else at the FBI.
We're an elite black ops unit. Shouldn't we be, I don't know, elite?
Ryan
The case itself was boring. It was a routine mission that did not feel like a Quantico case.
This is the main reason why it's not captivating or exciting. You could turn on the TV and flip to any other law enforcement show, and they, too, could take on a similar case.
Nothing about it that felt original to Quantico, aside from the characters, and that's not enough to encourage anybody to tune in every week, especially when the character work is lacking (more on that in a bit).
So far, this season has yet to be exciting or thrilling. At least with the first two seasons, the terrorist attacks and learning what happened was an incentive to keep watching.
As much as Quantico has bungled the season-long arcs and conspiracies, it's what this season is missing. There needs to be something big looming on the horizon. We need a big bad or a juicy mystery.
Give us something!
Harry has one gift, an accent that he thinks is more charming than it actually is.
Alex
One thing done well case-wise was the division of labor.
The team was nicely divided, and it made sense as to who was in which position. Dividing up the team allowed us to tackle the case from multiple angles, which helped make the case a tad bit more interesting.
Okay, let's talk characters.
Ryan and Shelby's marriage is still hard to comprehend. There should have been a whole lot of adorable Shelby and Ryan time during this hour to help us process and accept that they got hitched.
Alex, you were supposed to help me save Shelby and then go back to your life. You weren't supposed to stay.
Ryan
There's nothing to their interactions that suggest they are anything other than coworkers who have worked together for years and know each other very well. There's not even a trace of a spark.
Of course, we did get Ryan being a jerk and making a move on Alex.
Like she said, never do that again asshole.
Alex: I moved around a lot after Ryan. I got a job flipping tea leaves at a plantation. I mean it was easy for me. I've done it as a child. I followed some migrant workers into Italy for harvest season. One night I walked into a restaurant, and there he was. Andrea was a chef. He was so unexpected, you know? And so was Isabella.
Harry: Wow, you loved them.
Alex: I miss them. The idea of having a family for me was just beyond my imagination, you know? It was so peaceful.
Harry: Peaceful lives are for other people, Alex.
It's unclear whether or not we're supposed to ship Ryan and Shelby or if we're supposed to be holding out hope for Ryan and Alex. I don't know about you, but I'm doing neither of those. Shelby and Alex can do so much better than Ryan Booth.
On the Alex front, it was nice that we don't ignore the fact that Alex chose to leave her happy, peaceful life and the people she loved.
That was a huge decision, and it's good that we get to see how it affected her and that she opened up to Harry about it. She shared a piece of her life that was untouched by the spy world with him when it could have been something she kept to herself.
As for the newbies, it's too soon to tell with them.
We don't get to know them all that much. Deep struggled with firing a gun and keeping tabs on Gracie, Celine seemed competent, and Mike proved he could hold his own.

Out of all three of them, Mike is the one that you feel like you know the best at the conclusion of this hour, but it's not enough to get a good sense of him.
It's obvious he and Alex are going to flirt it up though, unfortunately. Harry's a much better choice, Alex.
Did anyone else find Mike more attractive before he shaved or was that just me?
