25 TV Breakups That Made Us Question True Love

at .

Some TV couples shouldn't break up, because when they do they truly make us question if love even exists. This isn't always referring to romantic love, although that is usually the kind of breakup that hurts the most.

We spend enough time watching relationships build up that anything short of a happily ever after feels very wrong. If two people make sense, in whatever capacity, having their connection cut off is a feeling we are all familiar with.

13 Scariest Moments in Television History

And yet there are couples that have to make that difficult choice, even if at some point they do find their way back to one another.

Here is a slideshow of the most painful TV breakups that we had to go through, some that still haunt us to this day and others that we are still holding out hope for.

1. Jace and Clary - Shadowhunters

Jace and Clary have to win the best breakup reason, not everyone can pull off the possible sibling excuse. Thankfully it isn't true so we can still believe that true love can prevail.

2. Kat and Adena - The Bold Type

This was a relationship that was handled so well at the beginning of the season, only to end up with such a confusing breakup. Not only did it come out of nowhere considering how little Adena appeared onscreen, but it also didn't do either characters justice. This all helped solidify that if Kat and Adena can't be together then we need to question everything we knew about true love.

3. Betty and Jughead - Riverdale

No matter how brief of a break these two could take from one another, every time it would hurt to see that happen.

4. Bellamy and Clarke - The 100

Breakups aren't always rooted in romance, and no one knows the term platonic better than Bellamy and Clarke. These platonic soulmates went through the roughest time during The 100 Season 5 because of their separation from one another. Now they need to get back on track (as friends and even more) if the show wants any kind of new storylines to make sense.

5. Klaus and Caroline - The Vampire Diaries

Is it a breakup if the couple never managed to really get together? Klaus and Caroline were headed to their happily ever after, only for a series finale to kill any hope for a future for them.

6. Harvey and Sabrina - Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Harvey and Sabrina are what is most pure and innocent in Greendale, and their love was kind of perfect during Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 1. They grew alongside each other so there is no chance they won't find their way back together, at least for our sake.

7. Hanna and Caleb - Pretty Little Liars

Hanna and Caleb went through so much together that questioning their love for each other felt so silly. Still, that break after the time jump was a difficult one to go through.

8. Claire and Jaime - Outlander

Now, this wasn't a breakup that Claire or Jamie wanted, but it really hurt to see them separated by actual lifetimes. Thankfully love conquered this obstacle and they are once again together and reminding us that real love does exist.

9. Jake and Amy - Brooklyn Nine Nine

Jake and Amy had the shortest breakup of all time, and yet there were those moments where it felt like things won't align for these two. Trying to make their relationship work and not risk their jobs felt daunting, luckily Holt believed in their love just as much as we all do.

10. Logan and Veronica - Veronica Mars

With Hulu reviving Veronica Mars, we can now look forward to more Veronica and Logan content to help ease the worry that came when they weren't together.

11. Nancy and Steve - Stranger Things

The growth that Nancy and Steve went through together felt so promising when Stranger Things Season 2 began. Unfortunately, there was no way around the very obvious signs about Nancy getting explored with Jonathan instead. It still stands out as a mistake on the show's part so all we can do now is wait and see.

12. Drew and Dory - Search Party

The couple that murders together stays together? It is a twisted quality but Dory and Drew are twisted people. Drew killing to keep Dory safe and then helping her get away with everything feels like true love on a show like Search Party.

13. Alex and Maggie - Supergirl

Babies, scheduling issues, and broken promises. Seriously though, Alex and Maggie breaking up was difficult to wrap our minds around. They were made for each other, and yet from their experience, we learned that sometimes things are out of our hands.

14. Hayley and Elijah - The Originals

Hayley and Elijah were a couple that the show decided to back off of after deciding that this was where it went too far. From a supernatural franchise that thrives off unhealthy romance in just about every scenario, Hayley and Elijah were the ones that finally went too far. This combined with Hayley's unfair death became a difficult thing to accept in the narrative.

15. Jonah and Amy - Superstore

Jonah and Amy were just about to get together when her pregnancy announcement stopped them in their tracks. It was a valid worry considering Amy was just starting to live the life she wanted, the one where she was in control and even going after someone she really liked. For a second it felt like things couldn't be easy for Jonah and Amy, but as always they found their way back to one another.

16. Jim and Pam - The Office

Call it an unpopular opinion but Jim's behavior during The Office Season 3 left a lot to be desired. They weren't officially together but their relationship was really important to them both until Jim cut the cord. He came back less willing to reach out to Pam and we have to admit that it was really painful to watch.

17. Tate and Violet - American Horror Story

Tate is pure evil and the idea of him getting any kind of happy ending is questionable at best. Especially looking back at his choices in real time, it is difficult to reason. But American Horror Story isn't looking to only write heroes, and Tate and Violet were a huge fan favorite couple. Getting that validation that after some time they could work things out was at the very least a nice surprise.

18. Scott and Allison - Teen Wolf

I am still not over Allison's death, none of us should be. Saying goodbye to Allison meant saying goodbye to the innocent love that she shared with Scott, all of which was an honor to witness.

19. Dan and Blair - Gossip Girl

Dan and Blair until the end. Maybe Joe from You on Lifetime will get to cross paths with Angie from Single Parents sometime soon?

20. Rebecca and Greg - Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

The idea that we will get a second chance at a Rebecca and Greg love means revisiting their first attempt all over again. Neither of them was in the best place for a real commitment so in a way their breakup was the first healthy choice both of them made.

21. Wade and Zoe - Hart of Dixie

Wade and Zoe were obviously meant to be together from the first moment they met. It was still an uphill battle for them to realize it and make a relationship work, but any version of a breakup between them was always the good angst that comes before the well deserved happy ending.

22. Rory and Jess - Gilmore Girls

When it comes to Rory and Jess, there is still hope for these two, there has to be.

23. Darlene and David - Roseanne

Call it nostalgia but there was somehow still some hope out there that Darlene and David would get back together. Obviously, they just don't work and Darlene made the right choice, and yet it isn't that easy.

24. Cory and Topanga - Boy Meets World

That brief Lauren plotline was the toughest twist to face, mostly because there was some time where it felt like Cory and Topanga wouldn't get back together.

25. Josh and Liza - Younger

Josh and Liza make sense in a way that she and Charles don't. That is why dealing with them breaking up puts all our faith in love on the line, at least for now.
