The Good Place Season 4 Episode 6 Review: A Chip Driver Mystery

Simone steps up and fights for what she believes is right on The Good Place Season 4 Episode 6.

Not all of the four humans are deserving of The Good Place, and to Simone, it becomes abundantly clear.

Brent's insensitive behavior throws the entire experiment into jeopardy and makes the humans question what kind of system would place Brent in The Good Place, to begin with.

Compare and Contrast - The Good Place Season 4 Episode 6

Given how intelligent Simone is, I'm surprised she didn't question everything sooner.

She migh have spent her first couple weeks in the Good Place believing she was in a coma and treading the line between life and death, but once she came around, she went back to the Simone we know and love from The Good Place Season 3

During Team Cockroach's time in the fake Good Place, it was a bit harder to distinguish what kind of person everyone was.

Eleanor and Jason kept to themselves and put on a show to make everyone believe they belonged there, and no one suspected that Chidi belonged anywhere else.

Although, Chidi does have a lot to work on when it comes to his lack of risks and trouble with decision-making.

Chidi

But when it comes to the current experiment, it's abundantly clear that Brent and John are bad people. There's no way around it, and anyone with eyes can see it.

Is it possible that Chidi and Simone remaining oblivious comes from their faith in the system? Sure. But they were going to start questioning things eventually as they're both too smart not to.

Because of that, making Brent and John into better people should always have been at the top of Team Cockroach's priority list. And it has been, for the most part.

Eleanor: Maybe Brent made some insensitive choices, but could you possibly see your way to forgiving him?
Tahani: I suppose.
Simone: No.

It was smart for them to hypothosize that Brent would eventually become good if he got into the habit of doing good things. Once something becomes a habit, you don't even think about doing it anymore. It's just who you are.

But Brent is so stuck in his way of life that his habit of believing he's better than everyone else will always overpower anything else he may learn. He's the kind of person who never thinks he's wrong.

And why would he? Brent got everything he wanted on Earth.

At this point, the only way to change Brent is to kick things into high gear and make him face his behavior head-on.

Eff that. Simone is not the problem. Brent is. He needs to change. And walking on eggshells around him ain't gonna do the trick. We need to throw the egg right at his face.

Eleanor

The Bad Place definitely picked the right test subject as Brent has proven to be a hard nut to crack.

There is a tactic the gang could try on Brent that I'd be interested to see play out.

Funnily enough, the only person we know who matches his level of selfishness and embarrassingly bad mannerisms is a girl from Arizona who became the savior of the universe.

Maybe the Eleanor Shellstrop method is the way to go.

The problem right now is that Brent believes all of his life decisions were correct because of where he ended up. What he needs is to realize he doesn't truly belong in the Good Place.

The only way he can leave his past behind is if he makes the choice to change his future.

What matters isn't if people are good or bad. What matters is if they're trying to be better today than they were yesterday.

Michael

I'm not sure how Team Cockroach could pull that off this late in the experiment, but anything is possible. If all else fails, they could tell the judge about how the Bad Place kidnapped Janet and take the opportunity to start fresh.

But rebooting feels counterproductive at this point, and the best way to move is forward.

Pulling an Eleanor may be the only way to get Brent to believe the error of his ways and realize there are consequences to his actions.

Chidi, Simone, and John are all fixable, but Brent might end up being the one who dooms the human race.

It's time to put a new plan into action, and with the experiment quickly flying by, changing it up may be the only way to succeed.

Stray Thoughts

  • The lack of scenes with Chidi and Eleanor has been downright sad. It's understandable that they can't be together right now, but it doesn't make it any less painful.
  • It might have been hard to talk of him out of it, but John's ability to keep Jason's secret to himself is impressive given the kind of person he was before. He seems to be making real progress thanks to Tahani.
  • Simone was the MVP of the episode. Her point about not letting Brent's actions go was something that can be taken to heart in real life. If you brush past people's bad behavior, it makes them think it's okay.
  • Not that we needed any more proof, but Michael freeing Bad Janet was another example of how much he has evolved as a character. Who would have thought that a demon could become one of the purest people in the universe?
