The Rookie Season 2 Episode 6 Review: Fallout

Who else had their heart in their throat and tears in their eyes during The Rookie Season 2 Episode 6?

I hope it wasn't just me becaue that would be a little embarassing.

Barley controlled chaos seemed to be the common factor for these LAPD officers as they faced everyone's worst nightmare...

Dealing With Disaster - The Rookie

Getting one of those horrifying Emergency Alert texts that say you have just minutes before you're going to die.

Okay, I know that's not exactly what it said, but when the alert tells you that a ballistic missile is going to hit your city in the next 29 minutes, that's generally what it means.

The Rookie to Stage Another Castle Reunion This Season

There was one detail that distracted from the drama and that was the date on Wesley's phone.

Does Los Angeles hold criminal court on Sundays?

Emergency Alert Message - The Rookie Season 2 Episode 6

Anything is possible but I seriously doubt it. I know shows like viewers to feel as though they are in the moment by making it appear the events are occurring as we're watching but this interfered with the drama for me.

Also, it was very odd that no one questioned the judge when he said the courthouse didn't have any type of fallout shelter.

Of course, that was until Wesley, Nolan, and Jessica realized he'd snuck out with the bailiff, the court reporter, and the Assitant District Attorney!

The judge's job may have been to be impartial in a court of law but with the possibility of a missile approaching, his only concern was saving his own ass and he was willing to shoot a police officer to do it.

Not According To Plan - The Rookie Season 2 Episode 6

The way Jonathan Ryland kept taunting the grieving parents of the child he'd killed had me wondering why they didn't gag the man.

The judge had threatened to do that to Oscar Hutchinson only minutes before. Did the bailiffs leave the gags behind when they left the courtroom?

Although I recognized Hutchinson as one of the prisoners who had escaped when the prison bus overturned, I had forgotten that that was the case that brought Nolan and Jessica together until Nolan mentioned it in this The Rookie quote...

Nolan: Oscar Hutchinson. He was one of the prison bus escapees we tracked down. It’s kind of the reason we’re together.
Jessica: How romantic?

Despite the turmoil of an imminent missile attack, Nolan and Jessica were completely charming in this installment.

There was none of that relationship weirdness that they've previously experienced where it was clear they may be expecting different things from this romance.

Of course, if the preview for The Rookie Season 2 Episode 7 is any indication, this is probably just a reprieve heading towards a huge make or break moment.

But we'll save all of that relationship drama for next week.

Emergency Alert - The Rookie Season 2 Episode 6

Because this episode already had plenty for Angela and Wesley.

Before we even get to that we need to take a minute to recognize Lopez and West deciding to try and save a group of religious zealots from themselves instead of running for the nearest bomb shelter.

If that's not dedication to protecting people, I don't know what is.

But back to Angela coming close to losing Wesley. When Hutchinson had the knife at the judge's throat and Wesley was nowhere to be found, I feared he was already dead.

Then I found myself bargaining with the TV gods that they'd already killed off Captain Anderson so they wouldn't take Wesley too, would they?

Wesley Keeps Control - The Rookie Season 2 Episode 6

Thankfully, our cute defense attorney was spared and the hope is that this brush with death will solidify Wesley and Angela's romance even further.

Elsewhere, Bradford showed his human side as he agreed to try and be nicer to Lucy all because Rachel asked it of him.

I didn't expect much when Tim and Rachel first got together but I'm enjoying them as a couple.

Rachel brings out a sweet side in Tim that he rarely allows himself to show.

It was also fun to see how he got Lucy to open up about how she'd like to get revenge on her cheating ex and her ex-best friend that he cheated on her with.

I’d cancel their rehearsal dinner. Change their registry to a bondage web store. Pay a gang of clowns to storm their wedding and hire a chopper to fly over their outdoor reception. See how well their cake stands up to the rotor wash of a Sikorsky helicopter.

Chen

I have to believe that Tim respected her even more for having such a creative, vengeful side.

The New Assignment - The Rookie Season 2 Episode 5

And then there was Detective Nyla Harper.

When her ex-husband showed up at the precinct he was furious with her, but more than that, he was terrified.

His response to have Nyla arrested seemed extreme but we still have no idea what he went through while Nyla worked undercover for years.

Not to mention that arriving at Lyla's school to find her missing during a possible missile attack probably pushed all of his buttons.

Harper was as shocked as anyone when Nolan stepped up to her defense...

Because she’s here back in uniform training me and I couldn’t figure out why until just this moment. I mean, she had a golden ticket. She could have gone anywhere in the department, anywhere she wanted so why the hell would she get back in blues and spend her days training a guy like me? I knew whatever the reason was, it had to be primal. Powerful enough to overcome her inherent arrogance and now I see your daughter and I see exactly why she’s willing to sacrifice what she does best for the person she loves most.

Nolan Isn't Happy - The Rookie Season 2 Episode 6

But it was Harper's own plea that had even Sgt. Grey tearing up and who can blame him?

I have been lost and I am trying to find my way back and I am going to make mistakes and I am going to fall on my face a lot but when that alert came in the only thing I could think about was making sure that she was safe. It’s the only thing that matters to me now.

Harper

Nyla Harper is tough as nails or else she wouldn't have survived working all of those years undercover but her heart belongs to her daughter and that's something that both Nolan and Grey can understand.

So TV Fanatics, what did you think of the emergency alert? Did you catch the date stamp on Wesley's phone and did it bother you as much as it did me?

Grace was nowhere to be seen, even while everyone was at the hospital. Did you miss her? Do you want her back?

And what type of disaster, big or small, do you hope befalls our favorite rookies next?
