The Mentalist Review: Murderess Needs a Spa Day

by at . Comments

One of my favorite guest stars on The Mentalist, Morena Baccarin, returned as captivating murderess Erica Flynn on "War of the Roses," which highlighted Erica's way with men and her ability to get under Lisbon's skin.

First off, did anyone else notice the size of Erica's prison cell? I'm no expert but it seemed a little large. I think my first apartment was smaller.

Jane was quick to call Erica on her line of bull. She cared deeply for Natalie? Ha! More like she knew the woman and realized she could work the angle to get some time out of her prison cell. A lot of time, actually.

Return of Erica Flynn

I loved how irritated Lisbon got around Erica. It just bugged the heck out of her how this convicted murderer (or is it manslaughterer?) was able to wrap any man around her little finger. Even better was when Grace said she could understand Erica's appeal if she were a man. That's not what Lisbon wanted to hear.

Lisbon despised that Jane was attracted to Erica and wanted her help on the case. And when Jane told Lisbon she couldn't send Erica back to prison yet because he needed her, he looked terribly pleased that it obviously bothered her so much.

Erica and Jane definitely had chemistry. You could feel her pull as Jane couldn't help but kiss her in the hotel room. I was almost surprised when he turned to leave.

Jane's bit as a clairvoyant at the fundraiser was fun. I've always loved watching him use his so called psychic abilities. He's so damn good at it that he could convince anyone of almost anything. It's a dangerous talent.

I'll admit that I was happy that Erica got away. It seemed a shame to bring such an entertaining character back just to ship her back to prison. And as much as Jane would haul her back to jail given the opportunity, I think he was a little impressed by her escape as well.

Rigsby and Sarah had the side story of the night as they attended a child birth class. Rigsby was freaked out by the childbirth video... and he works homicide! Can't really blame the guy, though.

As over the top as the instructor was, she made me laugh. Unfortunately, she reminded me a bit of the instructor when I took a similar class. I kept looking at my watch counting down the minutes until I could make my escape. It made me feel for Sarah and Wayne all the more.

Wayne's marriage proposal was not a surprise but I thought even more highly of Sarah for turning him down. These two aren't in love but that doesn't mean they can't be good parents. Did anyone else notice how relieved Rigsby looked after she left?

Although he had very little screen time, Cho still delivered the best line of the night and it was only one word:

Grace: You know kids used to call me Bracie Gracie because I wore braces until I was 17. What did people call you?
Cho: Cho. | permalink

How can you not love Kimball Cho?

So do you hope we see Erica Flynn again? Do you think Lisbon was simply irritated or actually jealous of the temptress' pull over Jane?  Not one of the best episodes of the season but definitely an entertaining outing for The Mentalist.

@Meh – LOL at the irksome bit! @rationalgal: interesting thoughts on a possible Erica/RJ connection. I just re-watched the episode. The first time I saw it, it bothered me that Jane would be attracted to Erica because I couldn’t stand her character in the original episode she was in. She really irks me! ;-). However, having watched it a second time, I absolutely loved it. Can’t deny that attraction between the two of them. Lisbon’s reaction - she just hates to see that someone she admires greatly for his intelligence can be ‘taken’ by such a manipulative woman. Baker is such a superb actor. Glad that Sarah turned down Wayne’s proposal. I’m starting to warm to her character. Loved the Cho!!!

Jane was tapping his lips remembering the kiss, even though he may have tapped it before. The circumstances were different this time. This guy has been celibate for - what - 8 or 9 years? Finally kissing a woman had to be a big deal, as witness the after-kiss look on his face. Of course he was thinking about that and maybe about not being so celibate any more. How could he not? We'll see shen Erica shows up again. She will, and it will be sexy but not good news for Jane. Erica is too opportunistic and manipulative. Is she allied with Red John?

Let me (a shipper) say this once to the few Non-Shippers here: I'm really sad that you people put all of us shippers in the same pot and don't recognise that there are a LOT of shippers which enjoy this episode (like me!) and be happy for Jane finally kissing someone.
A lot of us (not all) KNOW that this ship only exist in our fantasie and that J/L are just friends on TV.
I'm a little sick of remarks like "the shippers irk me" or "...know that the average viewer is not a shippper. True fans love this episode."
We are not all that crazy but it's like you say: "look there is a shipper, must be crazy and look, there is another one, I don't know him, I've not even read anything by him but he is a shipper so he must be crazy too."

Just one little remark: he never says "I will catch you"! He says "THEY will catch you!"

1. Sarah 28 weeks pregnant already?
2. The ending of this episode reminded me of the ending of Body Heat

There is chemistry between Jane and Erica. Simon Baker does expressions so well. I'm glad Sara turned Rigsby down. It would be a mistake for them to get married. Lisbon is jealous.

continued comment: I'm glad Sarah showed some backbone and turned down Rigsby, and told him why right then and there. Rigsby still has feelings for Grace and she knows that. She will let him in the baby's life, but isn't stupid enough to think a marriage would work at this point. I'm liking Sarah a lot more. I wonder if the writers are making Grace's anger go on to possibly have her blow up at some point. Cho needs more screen time.

I liked this episode, not the best I've seen, but good. It's almost a given that Erica Flynn will return. I think the actress did a wonderful job, but I'm not real big on this character going to jail, then escape, and repeating this through the duration of the show. I agree that no ankle bracelet in real life would have been stupid, but this is TV not real life. I don't see the problem with Jane having feelings as a man, his wife died many years ago, do you expect him to be monk. I don't think Erica would be a wise choice, and don't think the writers would do that, but come on, its ok to have another relationship after a spouse dies. I'm not saying bring a date to his wife's funeral, but you should give him some slack after so long.

I hope that Bruno Heller and writers know that the average viewer is not a shippper. True fans love this episode. The episode was great. Baker and Bacarin were wonderful. Lisbon's attitude was a bit stupid. She slept with a jerk as Masburn.

Lisbon had an affaire with Masburn (an milonario with a mafioso behavior). Jane kiss a woman after 7 years I think is very chaste. And Lisbon is not left trying in any way, because so far Jisbon exists only in the minds of some fans.
