The Vampire Diaries Round Table: "1912"

by at . Comments

The Vampire Diaries returned this week with a flashback, a beheading, a few brotherly bonding moments and one whopper of an ending.

What did you think of the trip back to 1912 and the events we witnessed in the present day? As always, our Round Table team of Matt Richenthal, Steve Marsi, Dan Forcella and Eric Hochberger is here to break down all the action. Won't you join in?

-------------------------------------------

What was your favorite scene from the episode?
Matt: Probably the image of a blood-stained Stefan staring desperately at Elena after draining that poor woman in the alley. The look of shock on her face, of embarrassment on his, summed up by Damon's: Yeah. She's gonna need some time on that one.

Steve: It was more a collection of scenes: Damon's non-stop one-liners in the first half of the episode. Simultaneously helpful, hilarious and insulting, his interactions with Elena, Stefan and Rebecca were all priceless, even by Damon standards.

Dan: My favorite scene had to be the reveal of the Alaric twist, which we will get to in the next question.

Eric: Mine was almost more of a quote, but really anything related to Damon playing the sober coach. Can't wait continue along the road to recovery.

What did you think of the Alaric twist?
Matt: Totally bad ass. Remember how much fun Alaric was when Klaus took over his body last season? We know Matt Davis has the range, so I can't wait to see how this plays out. And because we also know there's a good chance he's leading TVD, we can expect something substantial to go down.

Steve: Very well done. Even on a show where fans expect the unexpected, I doubt many saw that one coming. The flashbacks dovetailed nicely with the present-day action, too, in explaining the links between the Mystic Falls murders and the rings that unknowingly compelled their perpetrators.

Dan: I loved it... mostly because it took my idiot brain so long to figure out what exactly was going on. Using the comparison to the Gilbert girl from 1912 had my head all spinning, but once I finally realized what was actually going on with 'Ric, I was pleased with the twist.

Eric: As much as I was screaming RED HERRING with Meredith, I won't even pretend to claim I predicted Alaric as the killer. It's kind of beyond awesome. 'Ric has been one of my favorite characters from the beginning and it's exciting to seem to elevated beyond Damon's BFF.

Sage or Lexi: Which vampire from the Salvatore brothers' past would you rather... hang out with?
Matt: I'd say Lexi. But then she showed up on 90210 and I lost all respect for her.

Steve: Lexi. Cuter, and probably comes with lower odds of an ass whomping.

Dan: Yeah, it's definitely Lexi. Sage is way too scary. I'm afraid of her just watching through my TV. Awwww, I miss Lexi.

Eric: Lexi. As much as I like a little abuse while... hanging out... she might take it to a whole new scary level. One I don't live through.

More surprising development: That girl's head falling off in 1912, Meredith actually being on the side of good, or Matt playing a helpful role this week?
Matt: The second two options were certainly more of a big deal, and I didn't really see either coming. But in terms of actual shock? Of screeching like a third grader whose mom forgot to cut the crust of my peanut butter and jelly sandwich? Gotta go with the decapitation.

Steve: Gotta be Matt. Stefan decapitating that girl was surprising, for sure, but perfectly in character given his ripper roots (which we now know the birth of). As for Meredith's shadiness, nothing on TVD is what it seems, so it made sense that there was a twist. Matt threw me for a loop, though. Who was covering his shift(s) at the Grill, I wondering.

Dan: I absolutely loved the few bonding moments between Damon and Stefan. They're slowly but surely returning to their old ways, and each of them recognizes that they were better off that way. Damon did always make a better bad guy.

Eric: Oh, for sure Matt. Just being involved in a storyline alone warrants a surprise development, but helping out AND hiding in a closet with his beautiful ex-girlfriend and not trying to play 7 Minutes in Heaven? Dude wins across the board. Sorry, Return of the Ripper...

To what era should the show flashback to next?
Matt: The steroids era in baseball. Vampire strength and performance enhancing drugs? Damon would erase Barry Bonds from the record book!

Steve: The 1960s. We need to see Damon and Stefan kicking it backstage at some Rolling Stones concerts in rock and roll's heyday. Ian Somerhalder has thrown this out there multiple times, Julie Plec ... take a hint and make the talent happy.

Dan: How about some 80s? I heard Damon killed in Flashdance.

Eric: Ha, I have to agree with Steve and Ian on this one. It need not be 60s, but really I think we need to see the Salvatore boys following some rock band, snacking on some groupies back stage. Follow up: I could go for Paul's idea from the PaleyFest panel of Forrest Gumping some major moments.

3.-I love Lexie! She is amazing and she posses the screen in the moment she appears!Sage is pure game!Never knowing what she is thinking!
4.-enjoyed him in his first scene with Elena! He deserves a lot better that the writers give him!he is a decent actor but he need some edge! Human can be kick ass!
LOVED this ep cause it wasn't rushed and forced as the last one!more about the characters not about spells!

To what era should the show flashback to next? Well, my icon says it all, THE 70'S! Would love to see the brothers getting all boogie to "Don't blame it on the sunshine, don't blame it on the moonlight...blame it on the boogie!".

What was your favorite scene from the episode? Stefan and Damon's scene with Damon's decision to be there for Stefan. It was really a great scene Salvatore brothers scene because for once it wasn't about Elena. What did you think of the Alaric twist? I found the twist that it all relates to the ring more interesting than actually finding out Alaric was the one doing the killings. I like it when those little details have the main impact. Sage or Lexi: Which vampire from the Salvatore brothers' past would you rather... hang out with? Lexi for sure, I haven't seen her in s1 cos back then I wasn't into TVD, but once I saw how she smashed Stefan's head into the car's window...I would ask her to teach that! Plus she has amazing style! More surprising development: That girl's head falling off in 1912, Meredith actually being on the side of good, or Matt playing a helpful role this week? The girl's head falling off was enough to make Stefan become the Rippah...enough said. To what era should the show flashback to next? Well, my icon says it all, THE 70'S! Would love to see the brothers getting all boogie to "Don't blame it on the sunshine, don't blame it on the moonlight...blame it on the boogie!".

Favourite scene - Damon and Stefan heart-to-heart. Especially the part when Damon said this: "Whenever you go too far, I will be there to pull you back. Every second, every day. Until you don’t need me." I'm just gonna say it. That scene broke my heart. There is nothing I love more than the Salvatore brothers. Their relationship is absolutely the best thing on this show. It has been since day one. As for the whole "Alaric going crazy" thing - I totally did not see that coming. Ric killed Caroline's dad! And then stabbed himself! Can things get MORE messed up? Sage vs Lexi - Lexi all the way. Come on guys, Matt has been helpful before. The Ripper scene was pretty intense, but we knew that was his way. I lost track of Meredith's actions a long time ago. Make up your mind, woman! You want to shoot Ric and throw him in jail or help him? You don't get to do both!

I'm sorry, I may be crazy, but I don't think Alaric is the killer. I didn't watch the paleyfest thing, so I'm not sure if it was really confirmed or not, but from what I read, they didn't. I don't know, there was something about the way he said he was invisible...

More surprising development: That girl's head falling off in 1912, Meredith actually being on the side of good, or Matt playing a helpful role this week? Well I new Meredith wasn't the killer. That would be to obvious. Matt still has no SL. He's just there to take up space it seems. So I guess Stefan tearing the girls head off. They keep recycling Stefan's blood control SL! To what era should the show flashback to next?
They should quit with the flashbacks for a while. You don't need to do a flashback everytime you talk about the past or introduce a new villain.

What was your favorite scene from the episode?
When Caroline was trying to help Bonnie with her mothers transition into a vampire and Abby was being out of control! Oh wait that never happened! Another off screen SL I would of liked to see. So much for Bonnie having a SL in the show this season that we get to see. What did you think of the Alaric twist?
I guess it's good that's theres consequnces for chearting death so much. But how are humans to suppose to have any advantage now with fighting these super strong fast vampires. Sage or Lexi: Which vampire from the Salvatore brothers' past would you rather... hang out with?
Matt: I'd say Lexi. But then she showed up on 90210 and I lost all respect for her. Lexi made more of impact in 30 seconds of appearance then Sage for her 5 to 7 minutes.
ENOUGH with flashbacks. TVD excelled in flashbacking in Season one, but by now, they do more BAD than good to the quality of the writing in the show and are used mostly to either retcon stuff or needlessly fill episode up to the full amount of ~40 minutes.
Pretty much all of S3 flashbacks have been plain uninspired and dull. Show, you are not lost, you are not btvs, you are not angel, you are not once upon a time. Those shows actually have great writers and top-notch quality writing. With TVD I am beginning suspect that there's a whole room full of monkeys with typewriters writing episode plots now. By now TVD feels like a 14 year old child trying to replicate S.Dali's paintings. Grats for great wishes for the heights, but you just don't have the needed skill in writing.

What was your favorite scene from the episode?
Fourth episode in row, no scene stood out. A worrying sign. What did you think of the Alaric twist?
I am surprised that someone actually thought it was "unpredictable" they have been quite ham-handed on pointing to Alaric through the season and generally its just a pointless twist in order to FINALLY(FINALLY!) write out the damn plot-armor rings out of the story somehow...two seasons too late. Sage or Lexi: Which vampire from the Salvatore brothers' past would you rather... hang out with?
Lexi hands down. Sage, just like Melissa(refusing to call her meredith still, because she is NOT), was yet another uninspired cardboard-ish prop introduced into story. Ultimately a VERY pointless role. More surprising development: That girl's head falling off in 1912, Meredith actually being on the side of good, or Matt playing a helpful role this week?
Neither. First two were pretty much, well, obvious and the third I outright disagree with.
Neither Elena nor Matt were "helpful". Strutting around filling time in episode doing nothing hardly counts as helpful. Sorry show, you can't make me like those two without actually spending time to make them into PEOPLE and not props. To what era should the show flashback to next?
ENOUGH with flashbacks. The show excelled in them in season one, but by now the flashbacks to far more worse than good to the quality of writing and are plain uninspired and pointless.

The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Episode 16 Quotes

Dear Diary, a chipmunk asked me my name today. I told him it was Joe. That lie, will haunt me, forever.

Damon

You date vampires, Elena. It shouldn't come as a shock to learn that your guardian is a murderer.
