Hawaii Five-0 Season 2 Report Card: B-

by at . Comments

With the summer season about to heat up, TV Fanatic is taking some time to look back on the fall, winter and spring.

We've already handed out a B+ to Hart of Dixie, an A- to Person of Interest and a B to Body of Proof. Now, staff writers Jim Garner is here to grade Hawaii Five-0 in our latest TV Fanatic Report Card...

-------------------------------------------

Named Guest Star Screen Time (B-): Starting early in the season we had actors such as Robert Englund and Patty Duke, who were advertised as being on the show and barely got any screen time. This trend continued for the majority of the first half of the season.

However, starting with James Caan in February, this turned this around. In subsequent episodes both Caan and Ed Asner were prominently used, capped by the visit of LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell, from NCIS: Los Angeles. I’m hopeful that Peter Lenkov and his team have worked out the bugs on how to use big name actors they invite on the show.

Recurring Character Casting (C+): It’s no secret that many fans did not like Lori Weston - there were even petitions to CBS to try and get her removed. While I personally liked Lauren German’s character, there were many others that were cast as if this show was set in New York and not on the Hawaiian Islands.

I really hope that the casting department takes a hard look at how it is casting key recurring roles and find appropriate actors. The only reason this category didn’t get a failing grade was Terry O’Quinn as Joe White. He possessed the perfect balance of fatherly wisdom and frustrating co-worker antics with Steve. Besides, as I said early on, I think I have a budding man crush on him!

Team Dynamic (A-): The one thing we learned from Lori Weston’s temporary assignment to Five-0 was that we love Steve and Danny’s “carguments” a lot and you can’t mess with that dynamic. However, we also got a few new things that worked well, such as getting to see Danny in the driver’s seat for a couple of episodes while Alex O’Loughlin was out. It’s going to be hard for Lenkov to add a fifth musketeer to the team given how attached people are to the four current members as they are.

Weekly Cases (B):  We had the gamut of stories this season, from haunted relics to small pox attacks. However, for me the clear winner for the season was “Lekio” where James Caan showed that carguments could be done as a three-way and we got to see Cann bring some old-school to the new Five-0.

Spotlight Stories (F): None of the spotlight stories for our regulars hit the mark this year. Rachel went MIA so Danny’s home life was as boring as root-canal. Kono was “kicked off” the police force and was trying for some weird “emo” and “grumpy” look that just didn’t work on Grace Park. But both of those were a walk in the park compared to the horribly over-hyped and under-revealed “Shelburne” storyline Steve had going.

While Kono got back into Five-0 and resolved her case and Danny’s home got mentioned less and less, I got to the point well before the reveal that I was totally done with Shelburne and was no longer invested in caring who or what it was. I really wanted Kono’s story with Adam and Chin’s story with Frank Delano to bring up this rating, but there was just too much damage done early on.

However, given that those two stories are factors going into Season 3, I’m hopeful that Lenkov and his team will use them as the anchor to some better spotlight stories for the team next year.

Overall Grade: B-

I guess no matter what happens, someone is going to be upset. I personally would like to wait and see what they come up with whether its shifting the carguments (which I love) to other venues, McG's mom, or having Catherine as a regular.
I don't see how we can criticize something that has not happened yet. This is a great show, I did not agree with everything either, but I have confidence that they have learned what works and does not and will correct it. I'm looking forward to all the possibilities for season 3, it looks like it should be the best.

I was heartened to hear they realize the "carguments" were wearing thin. Then I was just as unhappy to hear they think moving them to another setting is actually going to fix that. Moving these things to other settings is not going to help-they need to be reduced to almost nothing. What part of overdone is hard to get? Putting Steve and Danno in a Dinghy and having them argue for half an ep is not fixing the problem at all.

Spoiler is out, Kono is going to survive!!!!!!

@Zia - Thanks for voting and good luck with your friend, I hope he's going to realize there is no life without H50 :) About the beard ... yes, it's really fun to see how people think. I don't really like beards but Alex's is somehow acceptable. He looks good wit it, however he's better without it. Scott in the other hand looks bad, really bad. I hope this is only for the summer break. I guess they can't have a beard during the show.

@Martinelli....I'm not on facebook or twitter, but a friend, who doesn't watch much TV let me use his. At least I got to vote, even though not under my name. I'm working on him to watch H50 consistently. H50 seems to be ahead in the categories that they are in. I hope everyone votes. I like your beard poll. I'm not much of a fan for beards. I don't like Scott's at all, but he probably grew it for his play that he is doing. I did not mind Alex's, but I liked it when it was in the earlier stages, not growing out.

@Zia - I agree. Adam is bringing trouble into their relationship and that makes thing more interesting. Fong is a pretty regular, "clean" guy, that would have been a boring love story. On the other hand CBS just launched the CBS Fan Awards voting! So pls go to CBS site and vote or you can find the link on my blog as well. Let's support our heroes!

@Martinelli......I saw that the carguments are winning big on your poll. They seem to do well with comments on other sites. I find it interesting that before the Adam/Kono episode everyone picked Fong, and then after, they decided, yeah, I think I would like Adam/Kono. I like Fong, but its just more interesting with Adam, and I'm glad they went that way. 3 more months until the opener. I do miss it.

con't from previous While Steve's Shelburne storyline fell flat with a heavy thud, I did think that Danny's home life deserved some credit. He introduced his daughter to Gabby, helped Rachel deliver the baby he had previously thought was his, and rescued his daughter from a kidnapper by shooting his ex-wife's current husband. Talk about some angst and drama. I also thought his interaction with the CIA is something that I would love to hear him tell Steve about.

I agree with a lot of what you said in this review. I think I'd give them a solid B. A grade based entirely on the first half of the season probably would have been a low C (or worse!) It was a terrible choice to have Grace Park MIA for so long. Lori could have been an interesting addition, if she had really been there as a spy/babysitter but she was too busy crushing on Steve, acting awkward and messing up my Steve and Danny cargument time. The season improved tremendously in the second half. The crowning moment was of course James Caan's appearance, followed closely by Ed Asner's and I cannot wait to see both of these great actors again.
I missed Steve during Alex's recovery, but I thought the team did a great job of picking up the pieces. And Steve and Danny were able to cargument over the phone, which was almost as good as in person. While Steve's Shelburne storyline fell flat with a heavy thud, I did think that Danny's home life deserved some credit.

Another interesting thing. Before the episode with Adam and Kono, my poll about "Who would you like to see Kono paired with romantically?" Fong was first, Steve second and Adam only third with 18%. Now the poll looks like this:
Adam 33%
Fong 32%
Steve 30%
Kawika 3%
I find it interesting because this means the episode was great and made people like them together.
