Grey's Anatomy Season Premiere Review: Everything Changes

at . Comments

After months of waiting to see how our favorite dysfunctional doctors would handle the tragedy of the Grey’s Anatomy Season 8 finale, the drama returned with "Going Going Gone." It was filled with a whole lot of emotion and a handful of laughs. It was reminiscent of previous seasons. It was... great.

Shonda Rhimes, how do you do it? How do you manage to keep the fans so invested after so many seasons? And more importantly, how do you manage to throw a curve ball like you did at the end of this hour? Let’s get to it.

Shades of Meredith Grey

RIP McSteamy. The majority of the episode was centered around saying goodbye to Sloan. His wish was that after thirty days of no changes, he would be removed from the machines keeping him alive. What an emotional send out. Derek and Callie stayed by his side while the others waited outside of his room.

In no way was I ready to say goodbye to this character. He brought a spark to this show that it badly needed. Not to mention, he was freakin’ gorgeous! Eric Dane, I will absolutely miss you on my television every week. At least we have the infamous “McSteamy” picture to look back on.

Although it was sad to see him go, the writers made a smart choice in killing off the character versus having him just depart. There is no way that Sloan would have left Callie and Arizona with his daughter by choice. He was a good father and wouldn’t have left that baby.

You have to love the video footage shown throughout the hour of Sloan. He really did change the lives of Derek, Callie and Avery. Now admit it: how many of you cried? I knew I wasn’t alone!

Meet Medusa. There is a new crop of interns at Seattle Grace and Meredith is the attending to fear. Nicknamed “Medusa,” Grey is showing them the same way she learned from Bailey. She even did the intern appendectomy with one of the new recurring cast members, Camilla Luddington

Who else is thrilled about Gaius Charles becoming part of this already awesome cast? Charles is an amazing actor and anyone who has seen Friday Night Lights knows exactly what I am talking about.

Mere-Der Love

Trouble Taking Off. Cristina is off in Minnesota dealing with Mr. Feeny Dr. Thomas and his endless stories. Girlfriend is told she needs to become a team player because she is not fitting in. Good! Send her back ASAP! Yang makes plans to fly to Seattle, Grey makes plans to fly to Minnesota. Neither make it. I can’t imagine how hard it would be to get on a plane after what they went through. Alex doesn’t make his plane either, following a sudden decision to stay at SGH after meeting Dr. Barnett, Arizona’s replacement.

The gang is almost all back together... even April. I have to admit, I didn’t even realize she wasn’t in the episode until Owen showed up at her farm. Did anyone else miss her?

Shocker! After keeping Arizona’s arc out of the spoilers all summer, we learned that Robbins lost her leg due to the plane crash. Who saw that coming? Like I said, Shonda did it again. This will definitely make for an interesting dynamic with the other characters.

Still On the Hunt

Side Notes:

  • Although cleared for surgery, Derek said his hand went numb. Did it really or was it nerves over operating and losing his best friend?
  • Love, love, love Meredith and Cristina’s facetime sessions. Especially when Cristina was watching the “trainwreck” of a surgery.
  • Bailey’s no longer the Nazi! Say hello to Booty Call Bailey.
  • Just one quick mention of the late Lexie. Did anyone miss her? How about Teddy?
Overall, a solid episode back. Grey’s Anatomy always knows how to bring the drama and they did not fail in the Season 9 premiere. What did you think, TV Fanatics? Was it a good follow up to “Flight?”
Sound off below and let us know.

Until next time, Grey’s fans! And more importantly, welcome back!

I actually liked the episode. The tribute was fantastic to mark. He has been there from almost the beginning and he should have gotten a nice ending to his character. I read these comments and the same people are always so negative. It's a show and these people are actors. They wanted to move on.. Can you blame them?? It's been 8 years of this show and if they want to move on you can't blame shonda for that. I'm reading a lot about how it's money issues. I don't remember reading that anywhere. I need to too just stick with reading the review. You guys are exhausting.

Isn't anyone else disappointed by the fact that Owen didn't go to Christina and went instead to give April her job back? Sudden flash of hope that things would be better between Owen and Christina was almost instantaneously shut down. I'm still hoping though.

The show will die with the death of Mark Sloan and Lexie Grey. I can't believe Shonda Rhimes would cut THE best characters on the show because of the budget...but then add completely new characters. Killing off George O'Malley was a HUGE mistake, and this was the biggest mistsake of all. Alex Korev, Derek Shepherd, Arizona Robbins, and April Kepner are dramatic and annoying. Mark and Lexie were the only reason I still watched the show. We were all waiting for them to get back together. They were hilarious and loveable. Grey's Anatomy will regret this. They have lost yet another faithful viewer.

I cried like a baby... oh man soo sad, I thought Mark wont die? I knew he will leave the show but i really thought I read that they wont kill him off. Really sad - love him Meredith, well I hope she wont be the deppressed b**** now ;) Christina: every other person would be happy about such nice people at work, but of course she isnt Arizona - i already cried cause I really thought she is dead. When I saw her, I was soo happy. But then I thought: YEAH you stupid cow get up and be happy, at least your alive!! cant blame her, but still, come on Mark died!!! you lost a leg, that sucks, but come on Callie really needs you! When Owen went to see April and said: Mark died, we need you, I screamed: NO ONE NEEDS HER! I WANT MARK BACK! but hey thats what it is - still so sad

Seattle Grace currently holds the record for having the most number of doctors dying in a span of what, like 5 years? :(

I loved the season premiere. I think that Shonda paid a great tribute to Eric Dane and the fans to dedicate an episode, the season premiere no less, to say good bye to Mark. I am going to miss him. I wish Eric Dane the best in all of future endeavors but he will always be McSteamy to me. I can't wait for the next episode to find out what happened.

At first I thought I missed the premiere show. Took me half way through to figure out this was the premiere, but I loved it. In no way was I expecting Mark to die. I thought he would open his eyes, just as the were ready to pull the plug. I was glad to see Alex come back, maybe he will be inspiration for Arizona to get up and get out of her pity party mood! Arizona..Callie and Sophia need you! learn from the best..Bailey, or should I say BCB..I missed Teddy, I remember when she was on Third Watch, loved her back then, bring her back! Christina, shes harsh and sometimes a B*^%h, but that's what make her character! Keep up the good work Shonda!

It was a great episode. I was looking for it the whole summer.
I was prepared for Lexi's death because there was a lot of spoilers. But Mark's death... It was very sad, the acting was amazing. It was the best way for him to leave.
Medusa Grey! Grown up and teaching. I love her.
And I hope that Cristina will return, glad that Alex stayed.
I thought that I don't like April but I missed her a little. And I really miss Teddy. She was an amazing teacher for Christina.
But the best best best news is that Arizona lives! She is blaming Callie and mayby also Alex - but she is alive. And she needs to return to the hospital as a doctor immediately because the new head of peds is horrible. I hate him already.

- April - was I the only one who was shocked to see Owen go to April and not Christina? But its good he is bringing her back, Seattle Grace needs her ASAP.

Hats of to Shonda, she is amazing, because to keep the audience entertained for that long, it takes a lot of creativity. I enjoyed the premiere: -Medusa Meredith - I wasn't really surprised there, Meredith always had that something very scary about her and she always was a tough cookie, so I like that she is being feared now. Remember how she was looked at when her affair with Derek was revealed? Its interesting how her and Bailey's roles have reversed in a way. - Christina - I had a feeling she would be in a different hospital and that she would be miserable...but I can't blame her. Hope to her more often though. - Mark - R.I.P. dear Mark, we will always miss you! - Arizona- guys, I have to say, I had a feeling she didn't die, even with all the "I am so sorry" from all the other people telling her that, I just remembered how badly Arizona's leg was and I had a feeling her absence had to do something with that. - April - was I the only one who was shocked to see Owen go to April and not Christina? But its good he is bringing her back, Seattle Grace needs her ASAP.

Grey's Anatomy Season 9 Episode 1 Quotes

The world keeps going without you.

Dying changes everything. There is the emotional fall out, sure. But there's also the practical stuff. Who's going to do your job? Who's going to take care of your family?
