Grey's Anatomy Season Premiere Review: Everything Changes

at . Comments

After months of waiting to see how our favorite dysfunctional doctors would handle the tragedy of the Grey’s Anatomy Season 8 finale, the drama returned with "Going Going Gone." It was filled with a whole lot of emotion and a handful of laughs. It was reminiscent of previous seasons. It was... great.

Shonda Rhimes, how do you do it? How do you manage to keep the fans so invested after so many seasons? And more importantly, how do you manage to throw a curve ball like you did at the end of this hour? Let’s get to it.

Shades of Meredith Grey

RIP McSteamy. The majority of the episode was centered around saying goodbye to Sloan. His wish was that after thirty days of no changes, he would be removed from the machines keeping him alive. What an emotional send out. Derek and Callie stayed by his side while the others waited outside of his room.

In no way was I ready to say goodbye to this character. He brought a spark to this show that it badly needed. Not to mention, he was freakin’ gorgeous! Eric Dane, I will absolutely miss you on my television every week. At least we have the infamous “McSteamy” picture to look back on.

Although it was sad to see him go, the writers made a smart choice in killing off the character versus having him just depart. There is no way that Sloan would have left Callie and Arizona with his daughter by choice. He was a good father and wouldn’t have left that baby.

You have to love the video footage shown throughout the hour of Sloan. He really did change the lives of Derek, Callie and Avery. Now admit it: how many of you cried? I knew I wasn’t alone!

Meet Medusa. There is a new crop of interns at Seattle Grace and Meredith is the attending to fear. Nicknamed “Medusa,” Grey is showing them the same way she learned from Bailey. She even did the intern appendectomy with one of the new recurring cast members, Camilla Luddington

Who else is thrilled about Gaius Charles becoming part of this already awesome cast? Charles is an amazing actor and anyone who has seen Friday Night Lights knows exactly what I am talking about.

Mere-Der Love

Trouble Taking Off. Cristina is off in Minnesota dealing with Mr. Feeny Dr. Thomas and his endless stories. Girlfriend is told she needs to become a team player because she is not fitting in. Good! Send her back ASAP! Yang makes plans to fly to Seattle, Grey makes plans to fly to Minnesota. Neither make it. I can’t imagine how hard it would be to get on a plane after what they went through. Alex doesn’t make his plane either, following a sudden decision to stay at SGH after meeting Dr. Barnett, Arizona’s replacement.

The gang is almost all back together... even April. I have to admit, I didn’t even realize she wasn’t in the episode until Owen showed up at her farm. Did anyone else miss her?

Shocker! After keeping Arizona’s arc out of the spoilers all summer, we learned that Robbins lost her leg due to the plane crash. Who saw that coming? Like I said, Shonda did it again. This will definitely make for an interesting dynamic with the other characters.

Still On the Hunt

Side Notes:

  • Although cleared for surgery, Derek said his hand went numb. Did it really or was it nerves over operating and losing his best friend?
  • Love, love, love Meredith and Cristina’s facetime sessions. Especially when Cristina was watching the “trainwreck” of a surgery.
  • Bailey’s no longer the Nazi! Say hello to Booty Call Bailey.
  • Just one quick mention of the late Lexie. Did anyone miss her? How about Teddy?
Overall, a solid episode back. Grey’s Anatomy always knows how to bring the drama and they did not fail in the Season 9 premiere. What did you think, TV Fanatics? Was it a good follow up to “Flight?”
Sound off below and let us know.
Check out the Grey’s Anatomy quotes page for awesome one-liners from Yang and the others, check back later this week for the first Grey’s Anatomy Round Table of the new season, and watch next week's Grey's Anatomy promo!
Until next time, Grey’s fans! And more importantly, welcome back!

The last series I became so involved in was The Sopranos!! I LOVE this show, BUT, I didn't like this ep at all!! Where was Mark's family, the tears, the raw emotion, and boob comment??!!? When Denny died, Mer almost died, Burke left, and George's, thought I was right there. Lexie and Mark didn't get the send off they deserved. Hope next week shows the emotion. Will never quit watching!!!!

The thing that probably killed me the most was two things. One was that one flashback with Marl and Arizona and Callie's wedding and whoever was video tapping him ask him who hes soulmate was and he said thats easy Lexi. I just lost it there. And the thing that killed me the most was the last flashback with the picture of mark and then it said Mark Sloan 1968-2012. I really started hysterically crying there. And I know its just a show and all but I still love this show to death and I cant deal with the characters dieing. I have been watching this show since the beginning and I dont want to see anyone leave. I love this show to death but last night was an emotional rollercoaster for me. I cant wait till next week!

Loved the Meredith, Alex and Cristina bar scene. They're the only characters left that I care about at all. Alex in the closet scene with Callie was good, too. I love him. Always have, always will. Could Owen be any dumber? He should stay on the farm with Pig Girl. Couldn't care less about AZ. The inevitable bitchfest that will be her and Callie this season will be definite fast forward material. I'd much rather see something about the real Chief, or see Bailey find her brain.

This episode had me crying the whole time. I cant beleive that Mark is dead. I mean I knew that he was going to leave the show but I still wasnt ready for it. And then I liked how Shonda had me thinking the whole time that Arizona was dead. But I cant believe that cheery Arizona is now without a leg. Not that there is anything wrong with not having half of your leg but Arizona was being all bitchy to Callie. I mean I can get how she would be mad at Callie for taking off half her leg but im sure that Callie didnt just do it. She had to of had a reason. I think that Callie is right that Arizona cant just lie im bed for three months striaght and go into depression. Callie needs Arizona because she just watched her best friend die and Arizoma needs Callie to help deal with her missing leg. Arizona could just get a fake leg. And I kind of like the new Mer. I like how shes not taking any crap and I a Coll so like how Alex came back. I knew he was going to. The thing that will killed me with the episode was all the flashback espically the last one. And the worst thing that made me cry the hardest was two things. The first was one of the flashbacks thay had Mark talking at Arizona and Callie's wedding when he said that his soulmate and the person that he wanted to be with for the rest of his life was Lexi. And he even said that when she was with Jackson. The other thing that really made me breakdown was when they showed a picture of Mark and then it said Mark Sloan 1968-2012. That just made me bawl!!! This show I love to death but last night was just an enmotional roller coaster for me. I

This episode was okay for me but I will never give up on this show. it is still one of my faves. I kept hoping the whole episode that Mark would just wake up. I was find the whole episode but when they showed the his name and date of his death I lost it. Sad to see him go. I'm really sad on how many characters we lost during this show. I kinda of missed the old days and everyone from the beginning. Well the reveal at the end about Arizona shocked me. Feel bad for Callie she just lost Mark and emotional she doesn't have her wife either right now. Christina needs to get back to Seattle quick. Interesting to see next week how everything happened.

I will miss mark. And DAMN arizona's Legg, i didn't see that coming I thought she was death or something, Love shonda and this Episode, See you next week

I'm a fan from the very first episode and I've defended it on it's worst days. I can't watch this anymore. PP either. I feel like she took the heart of each show and cut it to pieces. Her new way of story telling in each season opener was disjointed a jarring and NOT in a good way. Mark and Lexie were my favorite couple. I really don't see why they didn't go off into the sunset with each other at another hospital within an hours distance. They could have made references to them constantly like Sophia is off to see daddy Sloan this weekend or Lexi is preggers or whatever. Too darn depressing and that comes from someone who LOVED the shooting finale. I had a bad feeling watching the crash ep...knew I'd hate the new season. Oh well, more room on my tivo now for 666 Park and Scandal. I will forever miss my interns of Season 1-3 and mer/der. Maybe I'll check in occasionally if I hear of a good ep. I won't hold my breath.

Ok so April really didn't need to come back..:\ Other than that, a very emotional episode! I miss Sloan already. Cristina needs to come back to SGH where she belongs :) Sad to see Arizona lost her leg but it will be interesting to see how she gets past this.

so is it going to sink in for everybody that feels like they missed something next week when they show what happened in the woods? i mean weve known for a while now that she was going to do a jump and then go back in the second episode. As far as mark and lexie riding off into the sunset they couldnt because chyler said she wasnt going to be in ANY of the new seasons episodes, and mark wouldnt willingly leave sofia! he loves her too much to do that so i dont think there was any way other then to kill him, which as i said i thought they did a beautiful job. i woulda liked to see a little more emotion when lexie died too but think about it, they were in the woods, they were all hurt, mer was looking for derek they were just trying to stay alive. i think shock had alot to do with the lack of emotion but we can see that its tearing mer apart... it makes me sad that people hate this show. ive been watching since season one (hell i was screaming at my tv asking if shonda was trying to send me into premature labor when burke left christina at the alter! lol) and yes there have been subpar seasons but i wont leave till the end. and i love how they ended the active part of the show with MAC but end it with marks lifespan.

Grey's Anatomy Season 9 Episode 1 Quotes

The world keeps going without you.

Dying changes everything. There is the emotional fall out, sure. But there's also the practical stuff. Who's going to do your job? Who's going to take care of your family?
