Supernatural Round Table: "We Need to Talk About Kevin"

by at . Comments

The boys are officially back in town, as Supernatural Season 8 kicked off Wednesday night with "We Need to Talk About Kevin."

In response to the premiere, TV Fanatic Round Table panelists Carissa Pavlica, Carla Day and Sean McKenna have gathered to break down the best scenes, most quotable lines and biggest surprises.

Won't you join them? Read on and chime in now...

----------------------------------------

What was your favorite scene or quote?
Carissa: Dean's Hey, the rules are simple, Sam! You don't take a joint from a guy named Don and there are no dogs in the car!

Carla: When Sam got the burger for Dean. It was the first moment since they reunited that they were the brothers we love. Sam: It's a burger. Dean: It's a treasure.

Sean: You guys took two of the best lines. I’ll have to give it to Kevin’s quip about his girlfriend: “There’s a demon in you and you’re going to your safety school.”

What did you think of the flashbacks? Did they work for the episode?
Carissa: They did for me. The Purgatory scenes far more than Sam's scenes. The vampires were really interesting and I didn't expect they'd be the resident roosters in Purgatory.

Carla: Yes. I'm glad that the show jumped forward the year, so we didn't have to endure the time with the brothers separated. Though, I am intrigued by their year apart and well done flashbacks will provide important answers.

Sean: I definitely think so although I agree Dean’s were more captivating than Sam’s. That said I’m looking forward to more fleshing out what happened in that one year span.

Were you surprised Sam didn't look for Dean?
Carissa: I don't know. I wonder if he's just had enough and doesn't want to do it any more. When he was in Hell, Dean had a life, maybe he felt it was his turn. Like he just needed a damn break.  If they're together, then they're all in, but if one disappears, they get to have a life. Seems fair.

Carla: I wasn't, but that's because I interviewed Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki last week and they talked about the separation. I was surprised that Sam just gave up the hunter life cold turkey, didn't look for Dean, or even answer his phones. I hope the flashbacks provide a good explanation for Sam's behavior.

Sean: I get both sides of the argument, but I understand that maybe Sam just needed that break. I can only imagine going through what these guys have been through. I’m sure we’ll get a better sense of everything as we go on.

What's up with Benny? And why is Dean still in contact with him?
Carissa: I don't care. I adore Ty Olsson and couldn't be happier to have him on board. Everything he does rocks my world and his civil war era vampire is exciting and sexy. You know he's going to be trouble in the long run, but I'm good with that. I can't wait to find out what kind of trouble he'll bring!

Carla: Benny's a vampire and he wanted to get out of Purgatory. He needed a human to get him out and partnered up with Dean. I'm not sure of much about him other than that. They have some kind of plan, but no clue what it could be. It's weird seeing Dean being friends with a vampire. I don't trust, Benny.

Sean: He hasn’t had much to do, but he has a great screen presence. I’m expecting big things, especially because Dean partnered up with him in Purgatory. Dean friends with a monster? I’m excited to see what their “friendship” is all about.

Do you think there are even more "word of God" tablets?
Carissa: As if there could be a shortage of God tablets. What ELSE did God have to do in his spare time but write tablets?

Carla: Probably. It would be a good mystery for them to track them down.

Sean: If there’s one for demons, there’s bound to be one for angels, right?

Kevin joining the team. Approve?
Carissa: Yes. Fresh, young and an appropriate smart ass. I liked him when he first stopped by last season and the story progression on his own makes the character more interesting. He has things of his own to contribute. Only one episode and the season is shaping up beautifully!

Carla: Love Kevin. He has an innocence about him that is refreshing. Also, I love that the boys have a positive force with them now. The show has missed that since Cas's early seasons.

Sean: I’m glad he’s helping the brothers out especially with the fact that they’ve lost everyone. He’s got some great lines and a charismatic presence. Welcome, Kevin Tran of Advanced Placement.

Carissa go back and watch 6.01 again. Dean didn't quit. He walked away rom daily hunting because he promised Sam. He was with Lisa because he promised Sam but he never stopped looking for a way to get Sam back despite promising am he wouldn't. Then there was the fact he kept a gun in the truck and had no hesitation going after the girl who screamed.

What's beautiful in this season is that two people has joined this season afresh (although Tran was in the prievious season's final eps) and both had been plugged in to the story beautifully. hats off to the writers. Very curious to see the story arc of the vampire out of the purgatory. I can't imagine what his purpose to the story yet. It's a nice mystery.

I was very surprised Sam didn't try to find Dean. Never mind that he was tired of hunting, Dean is still his brother. Dean had every right to feel hurt and angry. Sam plain and simply didn't care that his brother was gone.

I was not surprised that Sam didn't look for Dean. Sam was dragged into the demon catching life from the start. He has been reluctant through the whole show so far. He has always wanted to get out. Dean, however, has always felt it was his duty. He is more of the martyr type. He will do it until it kills him. He sees it as his duty to save his family and the human race from demons and hell etc...
I liked the flashbacks, but they did get a bit predictable. There were too many of them. I think they need to space them a bit. I did, however, love the flashbacks of Purgatory! I loved the ones of Sam too on how he met Amelia. Eventually we will get to what really happened. It may take many flashbacks, but we will get there! lol

Kyle - Someone suggested to me that the person watching Sam might be Cas. I like that suggestion, greatly.

What was your favorite scene or quote? Actually the closing scene with Dean on the phone with Benny, and simply because it's setting up a great deal of tension for the season to come and I love it.
What did you think of the flashbacks? Did they work for the episode? Yes and no. I'm excited to see Purgatory, don't care much about the Ameilia thing.
Were you surprised Sam didn't look for Dean? Of course. When a sibling goes missing you look. I'm not suggesting that after sometime that Sam couldn't have gone on and gotten a life, but you do have to do some looking. It's natural - it's family.
What's up with Benny? And why is Dean still in contact with him? I'm not sure what is up with him, but I think Dean has found someone to connect with. Purgatory was all about being brutal, and Dean had to bring that primal, brutal part of him out and live it to survive. That's the part of him that could connect with a vampire, especially one who he would have fought with while in Purgatory.
Do you think there are even more "word of God" tablets? Probably.
Kevin joining the team. Approve? Yep. Kevin's a breath of fresh air. He's still new to hunting, but not so green that he can't help and defend himself. He's also someone who still has hope, something that I wonder if Sam and Dean still have in their lives - I mean really have deep down.

I love the premiere, can't wait for episode 2! I can't wait to know who was that man who was standing in front of Sam and Amelia's house, I just hope he doesn't hurt Amelia or something. I looking foward for Amelia not to die, I love her, I hope she doesn't die. I'd prefer to see Sam leaving her like Dean did with Lisa, I just don't want her to die. BTW, love Kevin, can't wait to know more about Benny, and Cass.
