Castle Review: Moving Forward, Standing Still

by at . Comments

Wow. Just... wow.

Who knew that an hour filled with mostly clips from previous seasons could be so amazing? In “Still”, Beckett steps on an activated explosive and must stay put while they try to disarm. Castle, being the gentleman he is, refuses to leave. So what happens when you put these two in an intense situation? Amazing things. Time to talk Castle...

In the wake of the Boston Marathon tragedy, ABC had delayed this episode a week. The network absolutely did the right thing. In a touching and tension-filled hour, things were said, things were shown and it was pretty awesome.

Beckett in Major Danger

The bomber had planted an explosive under his own floorboard after finding out he had Stage 4 Brain Cancer and a son he couldn’t find.

From there, this episode was filled with clips of amazing moments between Caskett that even a non-shipper would adore.

First, let’s acknowledge that Castle is one of a kind. The man stayed with his woman while she stood on an explosive. That is true love.

Second, he was still able to make jokes and keep her mind off of it while making her smile. Pretty much unreal.

Third, between the tense moments and Castle and Beckett’s amazing crime solving skills, they were able to disarm the bomb at the last minute. Not that there was ever any doubt that Beckett would be fine. Still, regardless, I didn’t expect to tear up from watching clips of episodes that I have seen before.

So, let’s talk flashbacks. Which were the best? Castle thinking he's a cop... the inappropriate comments between the two... Beckett in her revealing clothes... the trouble they have gotten themselves into. All of it was pretty amazing. One of my personal favorites? Beckett emerging from that pool in that ridiculous gold bathing suit. HOT.

One thing that you can’t help but notice, especially after Castle pointed it out, was the ever changing hairstyles that Kate Beckett has rocked. Seriously, she looks completely different from Season One.

Part of the fun of these two being stuck in the apartment was the argument over who liked who first. Even the phone call to Espo was hilarious. Who did like whom first? I’m saying Castle, but Beckett wasn’t too far behind.

Now, to the biggest moment of the nigh:  In fear that she had minutes left, Beckett blurted out the words we've been waiting to hear. Right to Castle’s face, in face: “Rick, I love you.” As a Caskett shipper, I can’t help but say, IT”S ABOUT TIME.

These two have really grown as a couple in an amazing way that hasn’t ruined the show at all. It’s rare to have the main characters maintain a successful relationship without losing the spark. Castle returned the exchange and all is well in the last of Casket.

Side Notes:

  • I know I wasn’t alone in tearing up. Who was with me?
  • A couple quick glances of Captain Roy Montgomery!! I miss this man. Although, Gates is growing on me. Speaking of Gates...
  • She knows about Castle and Beckett! This can add a whole new layer of fun for the writers. Gates looks to be a Caskett shipper!! Join the club, girl!
  • Where was Lanie once again?
  • Espo is the man. He was ready to take down the suspect to save his friend. The face alone showed how serious he was. I know that Espo is definitely one person you want having your back.
  • You have to love when the writer’s vest returns.

So what did you think of “Still?” Did you enjoy the hour filled of clips or was it a letdown after last week? There are only two episodes left.

Will the writers leave us with an emotional cliffhanger or will it be filled with fun? Hit up the comments and let us know what you think. Until next week, Caskett Shippers!

Loved the episode. Loved seeing Montgomery and so glad Gates knows. She's grown on me a lot and I really like her now (not just because of this ep - I was starting to anyway). I was not much of a shipper of Castle and Beckett, but I like them together now and it's real and doesn't seem fake. Let's hope it sticks after last week's doubting scene.

Loved the flashbacks, and the music fit so well with the scene's. Finally Beckett calls Castle by his first name and says "I LOVE YOU" and now she will consider taking another job in Washington? Im feeling like a frustrated fan.

How do we get to where we are after what just happen. Their love is not a issue their issue is her job offer and how that will affect their lives if she takes it. Castle will tell her do what you want but I will always love and care for her through thick and thin. If he was willing to die with her he can do this with her.

Give me a break. It's the old disarm the bomb at the last moment ploy. Are they serious? Can't come up with a new idea to showcase past episodes? Is the budget getting so small that they save money with flashbacks? The best part of that was seeing Kate's shorter hair which is much more flattering. My new hero is Espo - now there is a real man! I'm getting bored with this show-they need to move things along a little faster.

Agree. I believe the DC job offer is put in there to add intrigue to the relationship, but knowing these writers, I could be wrong. The success of the show hinges on the four core characters interacting together in the workplace. IMHO. Recall from Season3, Ep.22 ‘To Love and Die in L.A.’. On the plane ride back to New York, Kate reads from a letter from her first training officer, Michael Royce, “Trust me, putting the job ahead of your heart is a mistake. I just don't see how the writers can avoid much longer a Castle propsal to Kate after risking his own life to save her.

When Kate asks " Where are we going" and Castle says " the bedroom" and she gets the look of " Thats not what I wanted to hear" then she should have spoken up and put all the cards on the table. if the shows ran in order it would be " we love each other till death" then "Almost kissed rich guy" and next week " Im going to a new job". Its a great show, and I am 44 yr old guy and my wife and I watch it every Monday. But come on, Kate is still working on her feeling and yet she need to know where they are going after he stands by her ( possible no more father or son ) and she can not ask " Rick, what does the future hold for us ".

IMO makes Beckett look even worse.
Rick would just not leave her with the bomb and yet she still has that almost kiss with the other guy after that.
Leaves me asking should they be together at all?

Are Castle and Beckett up to the task- of course! Will it be simple, well do those two ever truly make anything simple, but will they realize that they really are perfect for each other, I can't believe the writers would have it any other way (leastwise if they don't want an absolute mutiny of their fan base ;) but seeing as how they have repeatedly given us what we have wanted in a mature storytelling way that doesn't rely on the totally overused separate our character break-up ploys only to get them back together- now that would NOT be true to what we know about Castle and Beckett...could we be looking at a temporary long-distance relationship...maybe...but I sure hope not Castle would be a wreck without Beckett around to annoy and Beckett won't have any fun without Castle. How are the writers going to do it, well seriously, isn't that part of the reason why we fans keep tuning in? :)

K- I loved the episode as much as any Castle fan and a part of me wishes that the the timeline had this week's episode and last week's episode switched, but (I know seemingly unfortunately) the order of airing doesn't change the written timeline order for the story line plot. "Still" came before "The Squab and the Quail" which actually makes sense, in the story most notably the knowing and understanding looks between Beckett and Gates over Castle's frustration in Beckett having to "babysit" Vaughn. Not to mention the fact that we know the last two episodes are going to have Castle and Beckett figuring out some things about their relationship. This, of course, also means that we as fans are going to have to put up with a little frustration while our beloved characters are figuring out what we as the outside observers see as something so simple- you two love each other, why does there need to be any problem? But seriously, stuff in relationships have to be discussed and worked out. Best episode ever? Really? It was pretty good, I guess, but first of all, I'm not gonna get all emotional when a star is in mortal danger, when I know they're not going to die. If it were Ryan, Espo, Lanie, etc., I'd worry that they could go through with killing them off and writing them out of the show. Then I'd take the danger seriously. Also, I usually like flashback montages, but 5 sets of them means the writers had nothing else to say---and they'd have been more meaningful if each flash was a second or 2 longer, to capture the mood of each. Best episode ever? I reserve that for the surprise party a few weeks back.
