Castle Season 5 Report Card: A-

by at . Comments

With a long, hot summer looming ahead, TV Fanatic is going back and grading the best - and worst - of the 2012-2013 season.

Having submitted our report cards for The Mentalist Season 5 and Once Upon a Time Season 2, we're taking out our proverbial red pen and moving on. It's time to grade this season of Castle.

Did Kate and Rick's romance work for you? Did the season finale leave you yelling at your TV? Check out our report and then tell us what you thought about Castle Season 5.

Caskett Sighting

Best Episode:  "Still"  Yes, it was a clip show but is was the best damn clip show ever! Watching all of the love, laughs, and drama from all five seasons was a treat. Having Castle stand by Kate even as a the bomb ticked down was a bonus. Finally hearing Beckett tell him she loved him and that they were just beginning…sigh. I'll be rewatching this episode all summer long.

Worst Episode:  "Swan Song" While there were some fans that enjoyed this episode's unique mockumentary style, I felt the entire concept fell flat. Watching Castle and Esposito mugging for the cameras while Beckett and Ryan shyly tried to avoid them worked…for about the first ten minutes. Then it quickly became an annoying gimmick and I found myself wishing it would all be over.

Biggest Improvement:  Caskett. After four long seasons of its audience wishing, hoping, and begging, the show finally made our dynamic duo an official couple.  Nothing was better than watching these two smile at one another over their coffees…while in bed. It's about damn time.

Most Frustrating Moment:  Plenty, I'm afraid. The most annoying thing about this show is that these two incredibly intelligent, likable characters rarely talk to one another.  At times it feels as though every important conversation gets interrupted never to be finished. Like in "After Hours" when Castle begins to address Kate's concerns about them being so different only to be cut off.  And did anyone else have their fingers crossed during "Significant Others" hoping that Kate would find out that Meredith cheated on Castle during their marriage?  It's the missed opportunities on Castle that make me crazy.

Character We Saw in a Whole New Light:  Detective Kevin Ryan. Yes, Ryan has always been adorable and good at his job. We love his bromance with Esposito and his relationship with Jenny, but "The Wild Rover" was a revelation.  Who knew Kevin Ryan could be such a bad ass? In one episode he went from sweet sidekick to an undercover cop with a dangerous streak. Seriously hot!

Character We Need to See More Of:  Dr. Lanie Parsh. It's been five seasons. Why don't we know more about this sassy, sexy lady besides she's Kate's best friend and Esposito's on again/off again booty call?  Lanie Parish is far too dynamic to be kept in the background.

Hopes for 2013:

  • Less Fear:  Or at least have them deal with their fears together. I have loved Kate Beckett since Castle's season one premiere but even I found her frustrating over the last few episodes. Deep down, Kate is afraid that the moment she's all in, Castle will get bored and leave. And Castle has kept things status quo all season because he's terrified that if he pushes for more he'll scare her off. I get it…but that doesn't make it fun to watch.  No matter what the answer is to the proposal at the end of "Watershed" I'm hoping it pushes these two to open up and face their fears…together.
  • More Down Time:  Yes, I know Castle is a crime procedural but to be honest, I don't tune in for the murder of the week. It's the characters that keep me coming back for more and the scenes I love the most are the casual scenes outside of the precinct. Let's see the gang hanging out at the Olde Haunt or another poker game at the loft where Martha can flirt with Esposito.  Those type of scenes from season 1 were huge fun and I miss them.
  • More Romance:  There were some episodes where we didn't even see our favorite couple holding hands and more kisses were cut short than completed.  Thankfully things picked up over the last few episodes and I hope that's a trend going forward. I'm not asking for sex scenes (although I honestly wouldn't complain) but it's the small, intimate moments that make this show and this couple such a joy to watch.

Actually agree with you about Lucky Stiff, I was just pointing out that they started to change Castle's character. In the nightclub scene, we're expected to believe that the renowned playboy doesn't know how to handle himself in a club? It's where they started to make him a dufus rather than a highly successful author.

Danny G/Rotwang 10-I can't agree with you guys more. The Squab and the Quail episode upset me so badly that I actually started to write a letter to Andrew Marlowe. I have never done anything ever close to that in my life. That was one horrible episode. It pissed me off that Kate pushed Castle back so much that it took 4 years to have a real kiss. Vaughn comes along and she lets him kiss her after two days? It really made me angry that she just finished telling V that she was in a serious relationship with Castle and just because of a millisecond of hesitation on her part, he thinks he can kiss her. SHE should have been angry about this!!!! As you noted also, she had a very tepid response when Castle came running in to the suite to check on her, afraid she had been injured.

a respectful gentleman (with your blessing), and generous (in essence fulfilling her lottery dreams). And Beckett responds cutely, cleverly and appropriately. I'd actually love to see more of these type moments in upcoming season. The Luck Stiff finale was great for me!!

Rotwang 10- I agree with just about everything. TSTQ makes me shudder even now. There were, however, parts of Lucky Stiff that were great. Castle revealed a bit of himself and proved himself wise when he discussed the effects of wealth, and he was even a bit self deprecating at the same time which was kind of charming. Beckett was impressed with Castle's maturity, and she even quotes Castle to Martha not knowing Castle is listening in- one of the few signs of real respect Beckett affords Castle. I thought the conclusion was exceptional when Castle brashly arrives to Beckett's apt, invites himself in (Kate is mockingly annoyed, but happy to see him), and shows not only how much thought he has given to what Beckett would do if she suddenly found herself wealthy, but he shows how well he knows and understands her. He also shows that he is a man of action (he already spoke to the dean of Mom's law school), a respectful gentleman (with your blessing), and generous (in essence fulfilling her lottery dreams). And Beckett responds cutely, cleverly and appropriately. I'd actually love to see more of these type moments in upcoming season. The Luck Stiff finale was great for me!!

I also hope that if Beckett takes the job and rejects Castle we get to see Alexis rip her a new one. She knows about her father’s past difficulties with marriage and was convinced that Beckett was all in, so she knows what a betrayal this is for Castle and I can’t imagine her forgiving Beckett for being so heartless.

Best episode, agree with Still but I thought Murder He Wrote a very close second. Worst episode, the Squab and the Quail, because it started that god awful arc. Beckett goes from wildly in love at the end of Still to a lying, selfish, ice queen in about 3 seconds. Where the heck did that come from? Hopes for next season, like many others I want the writers to rewatch seasons 1&2. Castle is a bit of a manchild, but he is also a sophisticated man of the world with extensive practical as well as esoteric knowledge, and yes a top shot. Stop playing him for cheap comic relief and a door mat. They started doing that in Season 4, especially in Lucky Stiff, and really amped it up this year.

Biggest Improvement- getting them together and getting past Moonlighting curse, and dealing with real life situations and real talk when there was (see earlier comments). Most Frustrating- (again see above)- Not seeing them date, missing passion, season ending arc, root canal proposal, Beckett regressing, Castle buffoonery... Character in a Whole New Light- I guess Ryan, though Gates had a few moments. I would actually say Beckett in the season ending arc because some of what happens really comes out of left field, but it is not a "whole" new light as much was seen before. it is highlighted now because the stakes are higher. Characters We Need to See More of- Everyone really. It's a great cast and they can be used more. Interestingly though, my answer here is Beckett- she's not a character I'd like to see more of, but I would like to see more of her character growth and development as it relates to the relationship.

and all that to be followed by the missed dialogue and miscommunication at the end- Where are we heading (uchhhhh). And this began the season ending arc so many people seem to have issues with. And with all that, in its intended sequence, that it came after Still just gets a giant Huuuuhhhhhhhhhh? with a million more question marks- yeah- I didn't like TSTQ.

Worst- There were a few I didn't love (that's ok), but I think The Squab and the Quail I found most disturbing (not only of S5 but the entire series). Kiss or not she was there and way to slow to resist (compare Kate's lack of resistance to hotel suite scene in 3x22/To Love and Die in LA when no kiss with a man she really loves while involved in a less meaningful relationship with Josh). She lies to Castle about it (followed with the ridiculous comment I won't lie to you, Castle (yeah- maybe you won't, but you just did). It was a bit disconcerting watching Castle race in, concern evident to be met by Kate's lukewarm response, and when told about the kiss and Kate's excusing it, he accepts it (painful). I also hated that Vaughn so easily got into and messed with both their heads. I really, really hated to see Castle act like and reduced to a caffeined buffoon- especially compared to the suave Vaughn, and all that to be followed by the missed dialogue and miscommunication at the end- Where are we heading (uchhhhh). And this began the season ending arc so many people seem to have issues with. And with all that, in its intended sequence, that it came after Still just gets a giant Huuuuhhhhhhhhhh? with a million more question marks- yeah- I didn't like TSTQ.

Best Episode(s)- After the Storm (some resolution, and I like the way KB dealt with Bracken and RC supports her), Probable Cause (powerful and Kate is really concerned though it would have been sweet if she actually broke him out of prison), Hunt, end of Lives of Others, Still (great, great episode- but compare some of the passion after she's freed to 3x17 Countdown when the bomb doesn't go off- just being a little picky here)- but it's the highlight scenes that I like most.
