Castle Review: Not Another a Ninja Movie

by at .  Updated at . Comments

"The Way of the Ninja" was a not a ninja movie, but Castle Season 6 Episode 18 did its best to replicate one.

To be honest, I've never even seen a ninja movie, so if the killer had been the circus knife thrower the Great Throwdini, I still would have been entertained.

But nothing beat the look the Castle's face when a ninja appeared out of nowhere, took the murder weapon from his hand and disappeared in a puff of smoke.

Castle and the Ninja

Coming off of the highly dramatic Castle Season 6 Episode 17 from two weeks ago, this episode was about as light hearted as they come - and I'm not complaining a bit. There was plenty to smile about here, starting with Perlmutter's snide remarks about Castle's lack of post-mortem knowledge filling several books to Beckett debunking Rick's ninja theory.

Rick's glee quickly turned to abject disappointment when he thought he might be wrong…

Castle: The killer can't be a ballet dancer because it'd just be such a huge let down.
Beckett: Of course, we can't let facts get in the way of a good story.

What fun would that be?

It was great to see the boys get their own adventure as they entered the hostess bar. Ryan was hysterical as he jumped when the girl sat on his lap and couldn't move her off fast enough. Let's not even talk about his karaoke.

Even Castle's indignation at being charged $6,000 after being kicked out of the club was comical but, hey, that's what happens when you want to play big shot with your black card. Eventually the bill comes due.

But that price was nothing compared to what he was going to pay for not calling Kate.

I really expected to enjoy that part of the story more than I did. Maybe it was because we never saw Carly or any of her visit with Kate but the whole segment fell flat for me.

Castle's suggestion to have a promise to not become boring written into their wedding vows was kind of lame. He's had two failed marriages. I was hoping for a little bit better insight.

At least Beckett appeared happy with his response and there was kissing afterwards... so I'll be happy with that.

Jade's murder was actually quite sad. She and her sister escaped the murder of their entire family to start a new life, only to have it cut short when Jade couldn't let go of the past. Was this foreshadowing for Beckett's handling of Senator Bracken in the future?

In the end, the ninjas may not have been "real ninjas" but they were close enough in my book to make sure things never got boring.

Your turn, Castle fans. Were you happy with Rick's response about avoiding boredom once they're married?

Going by the ratings numbers in the all important 18-49 demo, and where it ranks among the other scripted shows in ABC's stable, the chances that ABC will renew it are in the 85-90% range. "Castle" isn't pulling numbers like "Scandal" but it is way more steady and reliable for ABC than say "Nashville" or "Revenge." As with any business the bottom line is money. As long as "Castle" is profitable for ABC they will renew it. One of the extra things "Castle" has going for it is that it is profitable for ABC in several different ways; there is revenue from the syndication on TNT, the "Castle" novels, e-books, and graphic novels, in addition to the usual money from DVD and streaming video sales. (There's also "Castle" coffee, trading cards, and a board game!) Even big ABC shows like "Grey's Anatomy" and "Scandal" don't have those "extra" profits coming in to ABC. So, for right now at least, it's better for them to renew it. I just don't know why ABC always seems to be the last network to announce renewals. CBS, FOX, and NBC have all announced pretty much 90% of their renewals already!

" He's had two failed marriages. I was hoping for a little bit better insight." If he had better insight on the subject he wouldn't have any failed marriages. Duh.

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. From Kate getting ready in the morning by putting on the chain with her ring, to her lament to Rick that she doesn't want their married life to become staid and boring, we have seen an evolution in her character. As someone who previously voiced concern that the happy couple were not displaying more passion in the early episodes, and for all the "near kisses" I have modified my opinion and think the writers have restored my faith in the relationship going forward. I think her concern in the scene with Rick about life becoming boring and routine after marriage was genuine, but her consternation with him and the "geisha" was another way for her to "play" him. which she does very well. If one thing is obvious, it is that Kate trusts Rick wholeheartedly. Kate has always been adept at pulling Rick's strings, and some have criticized that she pillared him at times due to a distrust of the rakish playboy she first met. Her acceptance of the DC job was symptomatic of that. But I think we are now seeing a secure Kate - secure in her career and in her relationship. This episode and her reaction to the travail of "In the Belly of the Beast", especially her letter to Rick, show that she is committed to this future she has planned with Rick. This episode restored the playfulness I enjoy with the Caskett interactions. Now let's have a wedding!

I agree with the review above that it was somewhat of a lighthearted episode but so sad for the Japanese girl & her family. Ryan and Espo are the best sidekicks ever in a series and were hilarious last night. I am wondering about Kate however, she looks tired and drawn. I am also presently watching Season 3 of Castle and in that season, Kate looks so much more pretty. Her makeup lately makes her look older and less glamorous. What's up here? Has she lost too much weight; is she sick or something? She is such a beautiful actress and makes a great pairing with Castle. Her looks just seemed to have changed lately on screen? Also what are the chances of Castle being renewed for a Season 7 ? Years ago Monday in our house was always reserved for the series 24 episodes , but now Mondays revolve around getting ready for the next Castle episode. I would hate to see it end! Also, please bring on the wedding soon and in this season!

I think Stana looks different because they went from using film to shooting the show with a digital camera, so the image tends to be a bit more harsh. I watched a bit of a Paley panel with the cast and the director mentioned this fact and Stana talked about the difference as well.

@ the 24 reference, i feel it is like watching 24 sometimes. there are many references to 24 in earlier seasons, and so many guest stars who were on 24 as well- i mean alot!! recently watched days 1-4 of 24 and saw alot of the castle guest stars on it. Particularly Stana and Penny ( i miss Sheri!!) being on it.

She lost some weight and wore baggy clothes a lot after her "shooting" to look the part. I commented more than once on another forum, that she looked very thin. However, she doesn't seem to have allowed herself to get back the lost weight and still looks way under par. You're correct about season three when she looked stunning but that's definitely long gone.

I hope she looks pretty and stunning for the wedding and that they're both back as a married couple for season 7, maybe even have some little castles!

I really enjoyed this episode. And the plot twists....oh my :)
I too would have liked to see Carl and was a bit surprised that Becket wasn't more upset about Castle being in a private room with a geisha....oh, pardon: club hostess...
I read on several sites that some are really passed off about that because of the shit storm on Beckett when Vaughn kissed her...I'm not, I just expected a bit more of drama...but now I'm actually glad there wasn't (though in Castle's place I would be a bit more careful :D)
I really wanted to now where the shuriken landed after Castle pulled it out if his phone ;P
And I really loved the cultural input of that episode (who would have thought that besides the Italian and Chinese mafia there's also a Japanese one?)
overall, that was a great episode after that emotional one two weeks ago, I agree with Christine .....
only five more episode :(

You are correct!! This episode was great, classic Castle in so many ways. His unbelievable theories, getting in trouble at the "Tea Factory", and I laughed so hard with the pulling the shuriken Star out of the phone and it cutting Irongates- 'Mr. Castle'! As well as Perlmutter's "What you don't know about post-mortem analysis could fill a book, Mr. Castle. In fact it has. Numerous times" Love him! One of my students said she heard it was ending this season, of course i looked up and found it wasn't ha, gave me a scare and told her i'd fail her if she told such lies- we have a great class

Geisha are not and pretty much never were what you seem to think. Geisha (Art Persons) were musicians, singers and actors primarily and it was always their choice if they went to "the pillow" with a client, so Kate might well have known that there was no danger of Castle acting inappropriately. As for Japanese "Mafia", the Yakusa have been in business for a great number of years and there have been a fair number of films about them.

Castle Season 6 Episode 18 Quotes

Castle: Our killer is a ninja.
Beckett: Or he is just an athletic person with a hooded track suit.

This place is seriously creepy for a cookie factory.
