The Mentalist Review: Trust Your Instincts

by at .  Updated at . Comments

A dead body may have shown up in "Grey Water," but it was the first and final scenes that left a lasting impression on The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 14.

For the last few weeks, I'd been holding my breath during every moment with Rigsby and Van Pelt, always waiting for something horrible to befall them around the next corner.

Tonight, those instincts were finally right.

The Original Team
The old team is back together on The Mentalist. "Grey Water" is the 14th episode of the show's sixth season.

My heart was pounding for Rigsby as he held his baby daughter when a gunman stalked him in his own home. Without a weapon handy, there was nothing he could do besides cower and pray. Thankfully, Grace was there and armed but even though they all made it out alive, the scene still left me shaking.

Little did I know it wouldn't be the last.

Dan Becker's murder wasn't all that thrilling and I couldn't believe Fischer pulled Jane for this case. Yes, they had multiple agents working the CBI case, but Jane was intimately involved in taking down all of those suspects.

Wouldn't Patrick Jane's unique point of view be better suited hunting a multiple murderer targeting fellow law enforcement officers? When Fischer said she was pulling him for the new case because there was nothing for him to do, I was dumbfounded.

To be honest, the murder of the week was kind of boring. Even with its fracking, oddball protestors with creepy music and hackers, it still didn't hold a candle to the search for the CBI killer.

I liked having the old team back together even if their scenes together were far too short. There was something familiar and comforting about having Rigsby and Van Pelt back on board and it made me realize how much I'm going to miss them when they are gone for good.

In classic Jane fashion, he had everyone make their choice for the guilty suspect. Rigsby's instincts were obviously correct about Hutten, just not in the way he thought. Really, the killer could be anyone on that list. I'm certainly not ruling out Tommy Volker just because he's in Federal custody. He has far too many contacts on the outside.

There's always the possibility that it's someone else entirely. At this point, it's anyone's guess.

When the black form stepped into Grace's bedroom as she slept, he almost looked like the Grim Reaper himself. It was a horrifyingly creepy moment and I can't believe they left us hanging with him simply standing over her sleeping form. Now we have to hold our breath for an entire week to find out Grace's fate.

Now it's your turn, TV Fanatics. Who do you think is targeting former CBI agents?

Here is your first look at The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 15, "White as the Driven Snow."

Good article on TV guide online, re the Rigsbys. Sounds exciting. Sure hope the stats are good Monday morning. This is the last appearance for both of them...so says TV Guide.

Another good Insider's View on CBS.com regarding the new episode. Writer Eoghan Mahoney is the author. Interesting. I tried to watch the
Eonline bar scene, but there was a slash through the icon to start it.
Don't know if it is because I was using my iPad or they decided they didn't want to show it.

It's on youtube now, in case you still can't see it.

The latest sneak peek of 6x15 shows the three of them in the bar! They have a VERY interesting conversation. It's on eonline and the article with it is "Is Jane in Love With Lisbon." Worth a look! Seems like everybody's talking about Jisbon. There's also the interview Simon did on Extra last week, it's on youtube. He's asked about Jisbon there, and his response is really interesting. I'm not sure, but it looks like it starts at the end of 6.14, so I'm really glad they'll let us at least have a look at this reunion.

I saw the sneek peek, Rigsby is talking but Jane is not. Unless something else happened you can't tell from the sneek peek but the other interview does indicate a go. B-)

Jane really did buy Lisbon that pony and now I know he likes the shit out of her! I thought it just rented it. They asked what happened to it? Well, she probably rode it around her office a little bit and then have it away to a farm. Ohhhhhhh man! This is going to get good. Anybody think these two were on the DL? Jane also mentioned a previous episode too, A price above rubies. I will have to rewatch it. YES!

The song playing in the background in the bar is Luck be a lady tonight! Hummm! Interesting lyrics........!

@ Entwife

I went and saw the interview and I think you are right Entwife. It sounds like they are going to have at least an affair. Simon seemed like he didn't want to get into it but got trapped by the question. But it does sound like what ever it is, it's more then platonic. I hope it's on going. I also hope they do get TNT, then they can explore more adult themes. Everyone will follow them there and they could then be renewed forever. I wanna see Jane trying to cop a feel on Lisbon from his wheelchair!

Entwife
@ anitraward1

Hahahaha, ani! That's how long I want to watch the show, too! It did sound in the Extra interview that Simon kinda let the cat out of the bag on that one. I'm thrilled! I want to see the whole thing. I hope they do it up right. I know it's broadcast but they can go far enough even there to make it tantalizing and exciting, and perfect for Jane and Liston. What they'll actually do is anybody's guess. But since he said "get it out of their systems," it sure sounds like more than a kiss! But it also sounds like something that will start up, but then maybe stop. That's so typical of TV, to bring a couple together and then tear them apart right away. I really hope they don't do that here. When he balked at "seal the deal" it made me think his denial was perhaps referring to a marriage or something. That it would not go far. A lot to read into a little interview, but boy aren't we used to analyzing ever nuance when it comes to TM! Now, I'm going to have to check out those song lyrics and Price Above Rubies! It felt really nice to see the three guys together and talking a little about the past. This new FBI thing makes it feel like everything before it has been wiped away like dirt sometimes.

Entwife
@ Entwife

@ani You crack me up with your scenario. But really, yeah, simple scenes of their life together from time to time would be great. I'd love to see them enjoying some down time together. Where would they go? What would they like to do? I've since modified my opinion about the meaning of get it out their systems and go fight crimes. I think Simon might really have been trying to say that their personal relationship would not be the focus, at least not all the time. They're two working people and of course on a procedural they would be going back to their work. But I wouldn't mind a stolen kiss or a copped feel from time to time. A steamy night or a tryst here and there. Keep it hot. That's what we want for the happy couple anyway. Any happy couple, right? They don't need to be torn apart to work crimes. They just get up and go to work like everybody else, right?

Anitraward1
@ Entwife

We are pretty good at analyzing what we hear, we've been doing it a long time. I thought that too, when he said get it out of their system. Here's the thing though, they aren't the get it out your system types. I think Jane can make the commitment. Lisbon in her early years, young, was like that. Her reaction to her ex fiance and the Rigspelt marriage indicated that she's ready too. I really do think the show can work with those two in a relationship. As a matter of fact, I think given their histories, their relationship would be quite interesting. I can see it all now, Lisbon- Jane, if you don't wash those stinkin' socks, I'm going to throw you and them in the washer. Jane- Lisbon, did you know that if you wash your socks half as much, they will last twice as long? besides, these are my lucky socks! Lisbon- Jane, if you don't wash those socks, you will never know if your hypothesis is correct! I thought you didn't believe in luck? Jane- Tereza, I have you, and you brought the socks. Lisbon- wash them anyway!

But then again, as Jimmy Gadd said, don't believe the rumors. Waiting for the reveal of this is just as frustrating as it was waiting for the reveal of RJ.

Just spotted this: "When the renewals were announced by the Eye last week, it was an eyebrow-raiser to many that the Simon Baker drama was not one of them." From a Its a longish article at http://cartermatt.com/114073/m... It goes on to say
"... if the show is cancelled, we still feel like it’s possible that a season 7 is in the works … and we’re pointing towards TNT" "As for some other possibilities, we don’t really see the show working well on Netflix or another streaming service, since these are largely standalone episodes with few exceptions and don’t benefit from binge-watching like a “House of Cards” does." Its interesting it says a long plot series is needed for the latter, not weekly plots - as both Heller and Baker I think wanted to move to a long plot for this last series but were not allowed to by CBS. The article is worth a quick read.

@ Just Passing

Well! The plot thickens! Trying to figure out what's going on with TM is a lot harder than solving the crime of the week. Obviously a lot of negotiations are going among a lot of people who want to keep TM going. It seems CBS is the problem because it's focus is so narrow - they only benefit from short term licensing of the series to stations and from advertisers. Everyone else benefits from long term syndication and DVDs. We'll just have to wait until the dust settles. At least if TM goes to TNT it will probably stay there for years with new shows and endless reruns.

@ Just Passing

Thanks for the tip! Very interesting article. I posted it on my blog!

Rationalgal2

This is great news that Heller is not leaving! Thanks so much to Jimmy Gadd for letting us know. This does make it look like there will be a S7, otherwise why do that crappy RJ wrapup in mid-season? It had to be to get a jump start on another season. Now if only they would give us a better idea of where they are heading.....

Anitraward1

Jimmy Gadd just tweeted me and said don't listen to rumors, Bruno Heller is not leaving. I sent him a tweet and asked him. He's a real cool guy and always answers your questions. Jordan Davis too. I asked him about the color spectrum and he answered. Righteous dudes, direct your questions to them. we may get a 7!

Thanks for this, reassuring. Amazing isnt it, that now people can talk direct to the writers and actors. So great of them to engage and reply too.

Anitraward1
@ Just+Passing

I know, they have been really great about responding back. I didn't think they would so accessible but they are. They seem not to be of a pretentious nature, which I think is cool and shows good character. Most people like them don't have time for people like us, we are mostly a nuance. I must say these guys are down to earth, especially Jimmy Gadd. An onunce of kindness goes a long way. I wish him the best in his career.

Rationalgal2

The latest Nielsen ratings for last week reported in my newspaper do not show TM's Grey Water episode in the top 20 listing. They don't show The Good Wife either. The only Sunday shows that made the list were "60 Minutes (the only one on CBS)" "Resurrection"on NBC and "Believe" on ABC (both, ranking 11 and12, were on at the same time so the audience was divided between them). Neither did anything for the ratings of the shows that followed them. It is obvious that CBS should put TM back on Thursday nights and move the failing Elementary to the Sunday night dead zone.

Rationalgal2

Just Passing: Hope you are still here so I can tell you how much we will miss you and your spot-on analyses of TM episodes. Very observant. Totally fitting for a TM fan. THANK YOU!! Your insights into Jane's apparent emotional coldness may be a portent of his final intentions - to just get in his Airstream and leave his past behind. As long as he is in law enforcement it will haunt him. There will always be an RJ and he can't spend his life finding and killing them. Of course I expect that when he drives away, Lisbon will be with him. Jane needs her. She has been the on reliable anchor in a terrible time in his life. He will need her with him as he truly does move on.

I will miss your analysis, you are very good. Will look forward to you coming back. Ah....it might be kind of hard to stay away! Feel free to jump in at any time. Always happy to hear from you!

Yes, will be reading here until Sunday, then will have to sign off as the next episodes postings will be coming up for the USA sites and I dont want to catch them. Thanks for your kind reply. Although I have not been here long I will miss the people who are regulars here. I sincerely wish our episodes in the UK were running at the same time as yours, then I would be able to continue with all the interesting fun here. I think we are about 3 episodes behind you, so after a few weeks I can start dropping back in to see what you have discussed for the shows I have caught up with. Does anyone ever post here between seasons or will everything be dead in the water from the last show of this season until season 7 episode 1 goes on the air, if it does?

Rationalgal2
@ Just Passing

Oh, yes, we will be posting between seasons (if there is a between season when S6 ends). We are quite capable of running every aspect and nuance of TM past and present and possible future right into the ground in great detail, and enjoying every minute of it.

Simon Baker alert: My local TV guide in the newspaper lists "Not Forgotten" tonight at 9 p.m. CDT on one of the ABC extra digital channels. The blurb says "'09, Thriller ** Chloe Grace Moretz. Couple's past links daughter's kidnap." No mention of Simon but the blurb is probably carried over from times past. This station airs only old films and Simon hadn't gained any popularity at that time.

Entwife
@ rationalgal2

It is a real thriller. Dark and emotional, with a twist at the end. And there's a scene in it more graphic and intense than the RJ kill scene. It's how I knew he would do an incredible job, even on broadcast TV. Unbelievable.
