The Mentalist Season 7 Episode 4 Review: Black Market

'Fess up. Who hoped to see Jane there with Lisbon in that jewelry store on The Mentalist Season 7 Episode 4

I didn't, but that's mostly because I'd never expect Teresa to want a big ring, never mind one in pink. But an investigation into stolen gem stones should have been right up Jane's alley…if he hadn't gotten sick.

The upside was that Jane's illness let some other people show off their talents.

Let's start with Cho, although there's no question about Cho's abilities, he had some of the best lines of the episode, starting with his conversation with the gem dealer in this The Mentalist quote

Joseph: Do you think I'm stupid?
Kimball Cho: Maybe, I don't know you yet.

It's just one more reason to love Kimball Cho.

Abbott ordered Cho to bring Agent Vega into the field and I thought that was the right call. Vega is young, inexperienced and over eager but she can be molded. The thing that annoys me the most about her is her dismissive attitude towards Wiley. Wiley may be a bit goofy but he's incredibly talented at what he does and his skills are invaluable to the team. I hope to see Vega realize that sometime soon.

All Vega could focus on was gaining Cho's trust and she couldn't seem to understand that it wasn't like flipping a switch. As Cho tried to point out, apologizing is the easy part. Earning back that trust is difficult and it wasn't going to happen because of some silly trust exercise she learned at Quantico…

Vega, you fall right now you're going to hit the floor.

Kimball Cho

Yeah, I really do love Cho.

On to Agent Abbott. I wonder if we're ever going to find out what happened on the Rio Bravo task force. Although I really sympathized with Abbott's plight, I was surprised he tried to force the separation on Lena without telling her why. I know he was trying to protect her but his method just seemed cruel and I was at least happy that she saw through it for what it was.

Finally we get to Psychic Medium Teresa Lisbon. Jane had such faith in her that she could pull it off and he was right…with a little help. It made me wonder how many of these supposed psychic mediums use similar methods when "communicating" with someone who has passed on.

The part where Lisbon told Mary Kate that her dog Roger was talking to her because all God's creatures can talk in the afterlife made me want to laugh and go aww all at once. Yet again, it was Cho's line about the murderer's mother not being the type to allow her to chew bubble gum that stole the show.

Throughout it all, Jane looked so pathetically cute wrapped up in that blanket while curled up on his sofa. I was a bit surprised to see him back in his Airstream at the end. I half thought he would have taken Lisbon up on her offer from earlier.

Teresa Lisbon: Why don't you go back to my place, jump into bed? I'll come and tuck you in when I'm done.
Patrick Jane: I'd rather be here with you.

Last season I never would have guessed we'd hear those lines spoken by these two characters. Instead Lisbon ended up at Jane's but the conversation took a bit of a disturbing turn when Jane asked if she wanted to just leave or if she wanted to spend the rest of her life as an FBI agent.

First, doesn't Jane still have murder charges hanging over his head if he bolts from the FBI? Second, Teresa Lisbon loves what she does. Being a law enforcement officer is who she is. If Jane expects that to change, that doesn't bode well for their future.

What do you think Jisbon fans, were these just random thoughts uttered while he was sick or does Lisbon have reason to be worried?
