Ash vs Evil Dead Season 3 Episode 3 Review: Apparently Dead

at .

Some things are better left dead.

On Ash vs Evil Dead Season 3 Episode 3, Ruby continued her quest in driving a wedge between Brandy and her father to take out the Prophesized One. Meanwhile, Pablo, Kelly, and Dalton went on a search for the Kandarian dagger – the only weapon capable of stopping Ruby.

Cruel Intentions

Ash showed up to support Brandy by being by her side at her mother's funeral. And as one would expect from this series, it didn't end up being what you would call a normal ceremony.

After learning from the funeral director that Candace's head had been reattached in preparation for the viewing service, Ash was quick to jump at the possibility that she might return as a Deadite.

Ash's fear became a reality when Candace's body vanished from the coffin while his back was turned. It was a legitimately creepy moment and something that I wish the series would hone in on a bit more this season.

Don't get me wrong, there have been a few unsettling moments in Ash vs Evil Dead Season 3 thus far, but amping up the dread factor a notch or two wouldn't hurt.

The Evil Dead franchise has always found that unique balance between horror and comedy, it just feels that the latter is being featured a bit more prominently this season.

The fight between Ash and Candace in the coffin was fun, with Ash eventually emerging victorious after prying Candace's head off, and getting himself knocked out by the casket's lid in the process.

Did anyone else find it odd how the funeral home went through the trouble of reattaching Candace's head for the viewing, yet during the actual ceremony, the casket was closed? That was really bugging me during Brandy's eulogy, even though it was obviously done to set up Ash popping out of the coffin in comedic fashion.

After Ruby revealed herself to Ash, I'm surprised they didn't go for each other's throats right then and there. As much as Ash tried to warn Brandy, he continued to strike out in getting through to his daughter.

After everything Brandy has seen, she still doesn't trust him.

I'm still not quite sure what Ruby's game is with turning Brandy against Ash. If it's merely to simply toy and mess with him, that's one thing, but Ruby seems to be going above and beyond and jumping through hoops to keep these two are as far apart as possible.

There has to be more to it than that.

If Ruby really wanted to get to Ash, why not just kill Brandy? Ruby has the Necronomicon after all, so there's no shortage of interesting ways in which she can accomplish that.

I think it's time that you back off Ash. Course, there's nothing you cand o to me, but I'd hate for anything to happen to your precious little girl.

Ruby

Pablo had another vision of the masked woman, telling him to seek out the Kandarian dagger as a vital piece in his quest to ward off the evil affecting him.

The cabin is as much a staple of this franchise as Ash himself, and just because it was destroyed on Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2 Episode 10, doesn't mean the series is finished with that locale.

Not too long after returning to ground zero, Kelly recovered the dagger. However, the trio was forced to scatter once evil showed up and poor Dalton fell victim to the demonic presence.

Pablo: Guys, I think it's still there -- the dagger. I think it's at the place where the cabin went down.
Dalton: How would you know?
Pablo: Because a naked lady told me.

And now – a mere three episodes into the season – Dalton has become another casualty in the war with Ruby.

I haven't been the biggest fan of Dalton since coming on board, but I feel he really could have grown into becoming a vital member of the group. As much as I love Ash, Kelly, and Pablo, I was very much open to exploring the possibility of expanding upon the group.

I'm still holding out hope that there might be a way to reverse a possession. Although, there has never been mention of that even being possible.

The only remote chance of reversing a possession would be with the Book of the Dead, but even then, Dalton took a tree branch through the chest, from which would be pretty darn difficult to come back.

Pablo came to Kelly's rescue before Dalton could inflict any harm, but where did Dalton and Pablo go after the crash?

Well uh ... rest in peace Candy Barr. You were cursed with a dumb name, but uh ... I'll always remember you. Or
at least, I'll never forget you again.

Ash

While we likely lost Dalton, another character made a shocking return.

Ash's father Brock was returned to the land of the living – although he wasn't quite what he appeared to be – as this episode went full-fledged Pet Sematary.

It was great to have Lee Majors return to the series, even if he wasn't the Brock we remembered. Ash has seen stranger things happen, but he wasn't buying his father's sudden and miraculous return moments after seeing Ruby again.

The skirmish between the two was a heck of a lot of fun but was over way too quickly. I would have loved to see more from these two together. In the end, Ash came out on top. Unfortunately, Brandy only saw Ash presumably murdering her grandfather.

And now, after seeing her father kill Brock, Ash may have lost Brandy for good.
