To say that things heated up on PLL: The Perfectionists Season 1 Episode 5 is an understatement.

There's a killer on the loose that's not afraid to make a move, and the liars appear to be their main target.

Interrogation - PLL: The Perfectionists Season 1 Episode 5

Caitlin, don't you know not to step in front of a moving car?

From the moment the headlights started barreling towards her, it was obvious that Ava wasn't the one behind the wheel.

More Information - PLL: The Perfectionists

So who was?

There's a pool of suspects, but the show is trying to showcase Mason in particular.

Ava's plan was dangerous from the start. Not only were they planning to essentially kidnap Mason, but they were going to drug him and mix it with alcohol.

I need you to lure Mason to Nolan's cabin so we can drug him, and get his murder confession on tape.

Ava

It was a little surprising that no one brought up the fact that anti-depressants and whisky are not a safe combination. Especially considering the high dose they were going to give him.

But Caitlin would do just about anything to prove how sorry she is to Ava at this point, and that alone says a lot about her character.

Caitlin went as far as assaulting Mason and stealing his phone to show Ava that she could be trusted.

They may have all tried to deny their friendship, but it's a lot more real than any of them care to admit.

We were never friends.

Ava

But the liars' friendship really crashed and burned on PLL: The Perfectionists Season 1 Episode 5, and it was surprisingly heartbreaking to watch.

Dylan and Nolan's night together finally came out to his friends, and while it was before Nolan was dating Ava, it was during the time he was dating Caitlin.

Looking Down - PLL: The Perfectionists Season 1 Episode 5

Once this is revealed, both of the girls are understandably upset. If they're all in this together, they can't be keeping secrets that big from each other.

But once Ava simmers down, she does ultimately come to understand why Dylan did what he did.

I understand. About you and Nolan.

Ava

In fact, she even offers him advice on how to get Andrew back. It was a much-needed scene considering all the hostility that had been simmering between them.

The liars' friendship continues to be a highlight of the show, and everything seems to come together when they're on the same side.

What will they do now that Caitlin's...dying?

Understanding - PLL: The Perfectionists Season 1 Episode 5

It's hard to believe that she was hit by a car going at such a high speed that she'll make a full recovery, but viewers have been in this situation before.

Ava: What happened?!
Dylan: She got hit by a car!

It's a little repetitive of Hanna being hit by A, but the series does deserve a chance to do things their own way.

Odds are, Caitlin will be in the hospital for an episode or two and be out in no time. Or maybe the series will surprise us and Caitlin may never be able to run track again. It would be a bold move, but it would also be an interesting one.

However it plays out, the fact remains that this accident may have instilled the fear in the liars that's been missing for the entirety of the show.

Now that they know the murderer would come after them in a heartbeat, everything's about to get a lot more suspenseful.

Forgiveness - PLL: The Perfectionists Season 1 Episode 5

Taylor and Alison had an enjoyable dynamic that we didn't see coming.

Their initial meeting could have gone worse than it did after Taylor drove away with Alison locked in the back of her trailer, but there's already a sense of trust there that most likely comes from Nolan's trust in Alison.

The similarities between them go beyond just their looks. They think and act the same as well, and Claire Hotchkins was well aware of this fact.

Building Trust - PLL: The Perfectionists Season 1 Episode 5

It was a sly move on Claire's part to bring Alison to BHU, suspecting that if her daughter was still alive Alison could, in fact, lead her to Taylor.

Mona worrying about Alison was incredibly sweet, and she continues to prove herself each episode.

She got the upper hand when Dana tried to question her and refused to be baited by anything Dana said about Alison.

Unsuccessful Attempts - PLL: The Perfectionists Season 1 Episode 5

Alison and Mona are in this together for real, and they have each other's backs. This duo alone is undoubtfully the best component of the spinoff.

The callbacks from the series' successor serve as hidden Easter Eggs for fans, and the mention of past characters and relationships help tie the two shows together.

Ray: What were you doing when you were fifteen?
Mona: Playing with my dolls. And shoplifting with Hanna.

Ray didn't reveal too much information that was unknown to the audience, but it was interesting to discover that he was the one who wrote the message on Alison's wall as a warning to Taylor.

Think It Out - PLL: The Perfectionists Season 1 Episode 5

It appears as if his heart is in the right place, but are we sure that we can trust him?

Now that Taylor is missing, or has run away better yet, it feels like the perfect opportunity for Mona and Alison to team up and find her.

Mona: When you say gone, what do you-
Alison: Missing, Mona! She's not where I left her!

Alison and Mona looking for clues and solving mysteries together? That's why we're here.

Looking Down - PLL: The Perfectionists Season 1 Episode 5

Stray thoughts:

  • Who is Mona's chess opponent? It has to have some significance.
  • Dana Booker being the one behind Ava's notes was an unwelcome surprise, so we're thankful that Ava was smart enough not to bring the money with her. Can someone please report her and get Dana charged with breaking and entering?
  • It only made sense that Dylan's audition would have a slip-up, but he was able to pull himself together and it feels likely that he got it.
  • Are Andrew and Dylan done for good? It's hard to support their relationship after what happened, but Andrew was such a pure character and we miss having him on our screens.
  • Is the same person who hit Caitlin with their car the person who killed Nolan? One would think so, but this is Pretty Little Liars where talking. In hindsight, anything is possible.
