Pretty Little Liars Review: Will the Real A Please Stand Up?

by at . Comments

Anticipation for tonight's episode has been growing since the series premiered. In my excitement for the big reveal, I invited some fellow fans over for a Pretty Little Liars viewing party, and I'm pretty sure many others did the same.

"UnmAsked," as the title suggests, was meant to shock us all with the unveiling of A's real identity. But did we get what we were promised?

Mona and Spencer

To avoid further delay - *Spoiler Alert* - Mona is A. Yes, the frustration of losing Hanna to her former BFFs at the start of the series apparently drove her to start sending harassing text messages to each of them. But it was those very same messages that brought the girls closer together. When Mona showed up in the black hoodie, the collective reaction of this viewing group was: "Ummm... okay."

The buildup to this big reveal had the girls finding a secret hotel not far from the secluded landing strip that Ali used when she returned from Hilton Head. Once the girls arrived at the Lost Woods Resort, the show paid a not so subtle nod to Psycho. From the creepy owner to the taxidermy and the spooky photo of dear old mom, it was hard to miss the references. When Hanna got into that shower, we all got pretty nervous.

But the girls didn't have to worry about the hotel owner; it was Mona who delivered the final creepy monologue while sitting in the police station. Now, Mona being A was not such a surprising turn of events. Remember when she used her superior computing and deception skills to help Emily during the lock-in? Or how about last week when she had the perfect opportunity to send Hanna a message about making out with Caleb?

She's been present for a lot of key plot developments and manipulated her way into the group by pretending to get messages from A as well.

While her involvement makes sense, it was definitely a disappointing reveal. From the start of the series, we've been told that the show would follow a different A storyline. Lucy Hale even once said: "We're doing it completely different on the show."

So, what's different about Mona being A?

Perhaps it's the fact that Mona doesn't seem to be working alone. Despite Dr. Sullivan's (yep, she's finally back!) assertion that Mona's hyper-intelligence could give her the appearance of omnipresence, no one in my little viewing party thought that Mona could do it alone.

Plus, we saw Jenna meeting up with someone, possibly Mona, and revealing that she could see again. And then there was the strange gathering of Jenna, Lucas, and the mystery woman in the black swan outfit. On top of that, Melissa was acting all sorts of scary/threatening when she told the girls that she didn't believe Ian killed Alison, but that Garrett probably thought Ali deserved to die after blinding Jenna.

Mona asked Spencer to join team A, but who else is on that team? Mona even told her mystery visitor in the mental hospital that she had done what she asked to do. Is Mona just a puppet or was she the only A?

What really bothered me about the finale was that despite getting an identity for A, even that revelation wasn't 100% certain. As one of my friends very rightly pointed out, the problem with the show is that it can be so manipulative without being fully satisfying. Were you more satisfied or disappointed with the finale?

The parts of the finale that were satisfying and a little shocking didn't really involve A. We got confirmation that Aria and Ezra did take a big step in their physical relationship, and at the masquerade ball, Ezria finally went public. He removed Aria's mask to kiss her in front of all the attendees. I guess he figures he's done in Rosewood anyway so there aren't any remaining obstacles to their relationship. Except her parents.

Spoby also reunited, as Dr. Sullivan revealed that it was Toby who convinced her to return to Rosewood and face Mona. Toby confirmed that he was only pretending to hate Spencer.

And... Maya's dead? Emily's been getting messages and phone calls from Maya, but the police found Maya's body at Emily's home. Has she been dead all this time? If so, who's been contacting Emily? Was she the black swan at the masquerade? And more importantly, who killed her?

Sound off now, PLL fans: Were you happy with the reveal of A?

I loved it but i wished that we knew who the girl in the red dress is. Also I think that Maya has been dead 4 a while and A has been texting Emily to mess with her. I think that mellisa killed Maya because at the end when Emily was crying her eyes out Mellisa was just standing by watching suspiciously. WHEN DOES SEASON THREE COME OUT ON FOXTEL I NEED TO NO????!!!!!!! can't wait to watch it I'm so obsessed probaly the biggest fan eva

(continuation) So I hope that this new season (which I wouldn't have to wait too long for, yay!) will bring more answers than questions. If this season doesn't give us some REAL answers (by that I mean reveal some people's end game, for example), I think many people will get fed up with this show.

Just watched the two seasons, and after 47 episodes, I found this finale also very disapointing. At this point in a serie, more questions should be answered. And the few answers that we get aren't satisfying. - I was also wondering about Mona's reasons for harassing the girls, since it's her actions that brought them closer. But I guess she didn't tell her real reasons since she was doing someone's job. And if it's the case, I don't get the idea of different people to team up like that just to mess with the girls in very complex ways.
- The Toby - Dr. Sullivan deal: WTH? How did he even got the idea to fake his feelings? How did he thought of Dr. S? How did he find her? And how was A threatening her son? Why not going to the police?
- Everything surrounding Garreth, Melissa, Jenna, Ian, Jason,... Those two seasons, we've been fed little pieces of information, but we are still just guessing what happened and what everyone's game is. After two seasons, it becomes old. So I hope that this new season (which I wouldn't have to wait too long for, yay!) will bring more answers than questions. If this season doesn't give us some REAL answers (by that I mean reveal some people's end game, for example), I think many people will get fed up with this show.

Reading all these comments is crazy. Everybody is right about at least one thing in the t.v. show and book. Honestly Idk I want answers to I have questions as well. I wanted to know who the black swan lady was. I thought Melissa but then I had to think she pregnat so Idk who the lady was. And toby knowing about the Dr. Is kind of weird I dont wanna make him a suspect but yeah. I need season 3/4 explain a lil bit more. There is a A team We may not know all the A team charcaters but we have a hunch. who the main ones are and far as alison been alive or dead yeah Idk forreal. But They need to explain things in the T.V. show a lot better

the real A could be Alison. the real alison and the dead alison could be courtny ali's tween. i know they said it will be different but it doesn't mean it's not similar to the book. it's really frightning, so this means everyone are a suspect-- even jason. i wanted jason to be with aria if ezra's leaving. sad. will miss him.

In the "A interviews", A answered that she HAS gone to Rosewood High... And Mona never left, did she? Lie?

SPOILER ALERTS!!!I'm gonna tell u rite now dat from da season finale dat Mona is not da real A b/c Lucas was also A remember, when Lucas made a deal with Emily 2 meet at dat weird barn and da girls discovered his missing phone dat he couldn't focus w/out.it was apparently Mona's turn 2 b A 2 make it more harder since da girls didn't have anything dat belonged 2 her. And another thing, when in da I know your frenemies episode in season 1, da girls got a tex saying dat A is for Alison not Amateur, dat was clearly obvious dat Mona didn't want da girls 2 suspect dat A was her or Lucas, so instead she had them thinking dat Alison was probably still alive when A sent dat message 2 them. And actually thinking a lot more about it, I really do think dat da girl with da red dress or coat was a really big hint. So think u guys. When Alison appeared in dat lively felt dream, she was wearing something red I'm not sure but had something red. And besides u guys, Alison's favorite color was red big time. She was always wearing red lipstick especially dat real lipstick kiss stain she left for Hannah when she was in da hospital. And doesn't Vivian Darkbloom's red coat ring a bell 2 anyone?!!!! Hello!!!!! Because it does 2 me. And da very last scenes with Mona saying something in her head dat was also a big hint or clue was dat she said dat they think dat this is it dat it's over already. Dat they think they can finally just go home with their windows open and their doors locked. And Melissa is faking her pregnancy. Dat is how I knew dat she was da blac swan. When Spencer and Mona were in A's lair, Mona drew da picture of da swan dress b/c she knew dat that is who they woulda been going after. And y couldn't Mona or A just die so dat she wouldn't have 2 b visited by I think Alison dat was in dat red dress or coat.

I seriously think dat da swan girl was Melissa n dat she is totally faking her pregnancy or something. It was rather Lucas or A(Mona) dat killed Ian n which ever one it was were and still r part of da A team so Melissa doesn't really care about da pregnancy and is totally faking it. Think about da red coat or red dress dat visited Mona in da hospital. It had 2 b one of da girls from da A team or Ali herself sense I seriously think dat Ali isn't really dead. But anyways, da season finale wasn't a totally surprise. Everything wasn't so goody goody, everything is figured out. That's da way it had 2 b in order 4 it 2 keep moving on. But sense I have read da books 1-8, da black swan will b revealed b/c I kno who she is and also u will find out who the A teams leader is. U all will b surprised and you will b left with no more questions but a lot 2 think about

If
Mona is real A, was it her, who killed Ian?
