Siren Season 2 Episode 1 Review: The Arrival

at .

The wait is over! Freeform's mermaid themed drama has finally returned with the premiere of Siren Season 2 Episode 1.

It was a mixture of action, drama, and sea creatures, and it somehow left us with even more questions than we had before.

In other words, Siren is back and it brought triple the mermaids!

Xander already seems to be playing a much bigger role in the story than he did in Siren Season 1.

While Xander always felt more like a character simply created to push the plot forward, the death of his dad and the aftermath has given him the opportunity for his own emotional arc.

We couldn't be happier that the show is taking full advantage of it.

I didn't get a chance to tell you. I'm sorry.

Xander

Xander has been carrying a lot of guilt with him for the past few episodes and rightfully so.

Not only does he feel responsible for the death of his dad, but he's also the reason that Ryn's sister Donna is dead.

As we've experienced throughout the series, Ryn is a very kind and compassionate character.

Despite what Xander did to Donna, Ryn offered him comfort and forgiveness.

Ryn's progression throughout the series has been phenomenal.

While she is still struggling to fit in, she acts more human than most of the people around her.

In the ocean, we move forward. Always.

Ryn

She always puts others above herself and it's obvious that she cares for Ben and Maddie more than anything else in the world.

Speaking of Ben and Maddie, they still don't seem to be on the best of terms.

While they obviously love each other, they no longer have the kind of trust and intimacy that they once had.

This is probably due to a wide variety of issues, but Ryn's arrival is one of the main events that tested their relationship and caused it to start going south.

Xander: Is that what's going on between you and Ben? Her?
Maddie: It's not her fault.

It is interesting though, just how quick Maddie always is to defend Ryn no matter the circumstance.

In fact, she is undoubtfully Ryn's biggest advocate and would do just about anything for her.

Even when Ben struggled with negative feelings towards Ryn's nature, Maddie didn't doubt her for a second.

Her unconditional love and protectiveness over Ryn makes the relationship between them one of the highlights of the series

More Mermaids - Siren

It's obvious that there is insane chemistry between them, and while it may have been a bit out of context they've already shared a kiss.

Now that Ben and Maddie are taking a break, we have our fingers crossed that Ryn and Maddie will give things a go.

The breakup with Ben isn't the only thing on Maddie's mind.

In fact, her mother has returned to town and it is clear that Maddie isn't thrilled.

Sheriff Bishop is doing his best to make Maddie's mom feel at home, but his daughter carries a lot of pent up resentment for her.

Time with the Sheriff - Siren Season 2 Episode 1

Maddie is an extremely strong and intelligent character, but she has always felt a bit closed off.

It's almost like Maddie is so busy worrying about everyone else that she doesn't even have time for her own emotions.

It would be nice to experience a more vulnerable side of her as the series continues.

As far as the new arrivals go, it's safe to say that you can never have too many mermaids.

At least safe for the viewers, maybe not Ben, Maddie, and Helen.

They already have a lot on their plate, especially with Ben still feeling the effects of Ryn's siren song, so the new mermaids are bound to stir up even more trouble.

She was leader. Now she must ask Ryn for help.

Ryn

These guys just can't catch a break.

Ryn also has to deal with the fact that her sister's daughter is now on land and in danger.

After the emotional impact Donna's death had on Ryn, there's no doubt that she's going to feel responsible for her safety and well-being.

Now that the oil company is using sonic cannons to try and drill the ocean floor, all kinds of sea creatures are washing up on land.

And who knows what else is out there we haven't met yet? This may be only the beginning.

Overall, Siren Season 2 Episode 1 was a relatively strong start to the season.

There's still a lot of room for development, and we can only hope that the characters will continue to evolve throughout the course of the series.
